  1. How do you use them? My generous mom purchased the entire collection of SOTW on CD. I am trying to figure out how to work them in with what we already do - I read SOTW aloud to ds, we do questions/map work/activities from the AG plus all the additional resources such as our history encyclopedias, library books, etc. I am wondering if you recommend replacing the read-aloud with the audiobook or if you do it in addition to using the text... Please advise me on how YOU use them in your homeschool. Thanks!
  2. I love SOTW and it is a big part of why I am homeschooling. We did the first 6 chapters this summer and it went beautifully. DD loves it and asks to do it. BUT...we just hit all the India, China etc stuff and I am feeling like it is getting to be so much information and so many books from the library to keep track of. Anyone else been there? Please give me that push I need to keep going!
  3. I'm wondering, is the activity guide really necessary? For a child who doesn't really care about crafts and hands-on projects, what do you think? If you use SOTW 1 by itself, with history supplements as here, is that enough? I'm more of a theory and reading, visual kind of person. However, I do like the idea of working on maps (the visual kind of side). Do I have to get the AG just for the maps? Or is there more to it? Give me a few good reasons to buy the AG, essentially :D
  4. We are in week 2 of SOTW, Ancients. My son is 6.5. I'm not sure he's going to "get it". We got the audio cds instead of the text thinking that it would be like listening to stories. We listen, I ask the review questions...it's like nobody's home! Anyone else have similar struggles? We got some of the recommended books from the activity guide and he seemed to understand a little more about archeology, but can't even grasp the concept of "history". I try to say before he was born, before mommy was born, before grandpa was born, before Jesus was born...but that might as well be a few years ago to him. I don't think he can grasp time. He did enjoy digging and pretending he was an archaeologist, but other than digging up bones of dead dinosaurs, doesn't get why we would need to dig in the dirt to figure out about anything. I can't seem to get through. I thought the curriculum was supposed to be for 1st or 5th graders. Is it possibly too hard for him? Should I switch to something easier to understand? Should I wait a year to start history? He is fairly immature compared to his peers...I rewind the audio story to the part that has the answer and he STILL can't give me the right answer sometimes. I don't know what to do and am feeling discouraged. It is my first year homeschooling. The other subjects are going smoothly other than what I think is typical difficulty in narration (picking out obscure details instead of main theme).
  5. I am trying to decide whether to do Winter Promise HIH for 2nd grade or SOTW 1 AG for 4th grade. Would SOTW 1 with AG be appropriate for 4th grade? What kinds of activities are there? We were really excited about the Cunieform Tablet project in HIH. Looking for more crafty things to do. Thanks for any help. I need to know what I am doing for 4th grade so I will know what I am doing next year for 2nd. :tongue_smilie:
  6. I am using SOTW with my dc, 8 and almost 6. We are finishing SOTW 2 this year. I used SOTW 1 with them last year; since they were 7 and 4 at the time, I focused on picture books, age appropriate short stories, and projects. I read a couple of longer books to ds 7, including Black Ships Before Troy (which he loved; although in retrospect I wonder , "What was I thinking?" :rolleyes: ) and Tales of Sinbad (which he also loved). In general, I would say I treated every chapter equally; I read SOTW, they listened to the audio book, I checked out books from the library, ds 7 did map work and narrations or answered review questions. This year, using SOTW 2, I'm attempting to focus on some of the key events and historical figures in greater depth. I have read more biographies, and more literature. I have done fewer projects with them. I plan to do this next year as well. Which brings me to my question: to what degree do you try to incorporate the list of "great men and women to cover" and literature selections in WTM with SOTW? Obviously, most of the great men and women are included anyway, but to what degree do you use this list to guide you in decisions about what to cover in greater depth? How many of the literature selections do you try to incorporate, and do you do so in a systematic way, or simply read them in the order suggested in WTM? I'm curious to know how others approach this; I may also post a poll about how many of the literature selctions to cover, and which are "must reads." Thank you!
  7. I've been looking over my SOTW for next year, and I was wondering a few things. If you're a planner, how did you schedule these? Is it feasible to do a chapter a week? There are 42 chapters in the book. Also, how necessary are the go-along Kingfisher and Usborne books? I'm guessing they're key, but before I go hunting, I thought I should check. For example, there's the one that's OOP. Would that be worth the $30 or so I might have to pay for it? The main reason I'm asking is because I've bought the strongly recommended go-alongs for few other things in the past and found that I almost never referred to them. I'm also paranoid about reading bits and pieces from several different books for each lesson after our experience with our WP curricula (DD hated the format :(). Of course, if the books are indispensable, I'll shell out for them :D But I'd love to hear others' experiences. TIA!
  8. Does anyone have SOTW broken down in a spreadsheet or some type of schedule that I could copy? Or do you have any suggestions on how to quickly go about doing this myself? We just started homeschooling this week, and I realize I need a way to schedule and plan all the lessons or it feels like we're going no where fast. Really, it all feels a bit overwhelming right now, but if I take a few steps towards organizing myself, it would help tremendously. I'm looking for all 4 volumes, but only need 1 & 2 right now. Thanks!
  9. We started SOTW Vol. 1 when my daughters were in 2nd and K. We're finishing Volume 2 now at the end of 3rd and 1st and are looking forward to the next two volumes. Here's my question. Because we started a year late for older daughter, she obviously won't progress through the complete cycle three times. What do I do about that? Keep progressing through and miss the final year of modern history? Condense two years into one? If so, which years? I can't imagine doing that. I didn't like skipping chapters in Vols. 1 & 2, but did it in order to get finished with 42 chapters in 36 weeks of school. We never could manage more than one chapter a week, and spent longer on some. Is there another solution? My younger daughter is in the opposite situation, having started a year earlier than on schedule but I'm not concerned so much about that. Thanks for any advice you can give.
  10. I am beginning to plan for next year, and get the feeling that many people have not liked SOTW year 4. If you have used it, can you give me your opinion about it..what you liked and disliked? My boys have loved SOTW 1,2,and 3. Thanks home4fun
  11. I have the AG, and don't get me wrong, I love it. I think there are a ton of wonderful ideas in it. But, for the most part, for whatever reason, I just read SOTW aloud and dd listens. I do usually ask the review questions (or if I'm too lazy to pull out the AG, I make up my own). Dd is 6 and doesn't read yet, so our main focus is phonics and math. Everything else is just for the sake of exposure. Our public library has almost none of the recommended books to go along with SOTW, and it's time consuming to find others. I also work, and sometimes there just isn't time to do the "extras" after we finish our core subjects. All this to say, I've decided to use SOTW just as a read-aloud. (Okay, this is what we've been doing anyway, but now I've made it official ;)).
  12. I want my kids to have a literature based education. I like SOTW, I don't think my kids do. They enjoy the books we get from the library for each section, they like the crafts but they both "glaze" over when I read SOTW 1 with them. I'm also concerned that it goes too fast for them. They aren't retaining History like they are all of our other reading. What to do, what to do? Switch to something more literature based? Sonlight? Mommy-made-it (so much work and I worry I'm not giving them enough)? Keep going for another year and hope they grow into it? Melissa
  13. I recently found out about "Story of the World" for history class, and wanted to know if anybody had experience with it. A lot of the reviews I've read online are good, but I've also seen some very negative reviews on Amazon.com. I was considering using Veritas, but am interested in learning about about this one now.
  14. I was reading on a previous post comments about SOTW...she was asking if it was really that good. I think it is but I have a concern. You see I have used the first two books and we are now on book 3. My problem is this...my kids have a hard time remembering all the details on exams. I wish they would come out with a worksheet for them to do as a review(sorry I am not the type to do that on my own...). Does anyone do them on their own? Maybe I am doing something wrong in my teaching. This is how we do our work on a chapter: 1. I read the chapter aloud. 2. We do the mapwork and coloring pages and any of the activities they show interest in doing. 3. They read the chapter on their own. 4. We go over the review questions. 5. They take the test. So, what can be the problem? They usually miss 3-4 out of the questions but as those of you who use these tests know...there are only about 20 or so questions and missing 3-4 can drop your percentage from an A to a B or even a C. We all enjoy the reading and honestly they do remember things from past chapters that I forget(if they see something on TV or hear a particular name etc) so I know they are learning but what gives that they can't ace the tests? I want to stay with SOTW as I like the way it reads and it is not dry(we tried All American History and ALL of us hated it...it was like pulling teeth to get them to do it) My concern is maybe it is all me and how I am teaching history? please inspire me and let me know what I can do to improve our history experience. thanks
  15. This has probably been asked before but, here goes! I've been looking at Story of the world on Amazon- I was thinking of using it with my son next year- and lets just say that some of the reviews on there are no less than scathing. They keep saying her historical facts are off, she moves events around to prove her points, the text talks down to children and she waxes over important happenings only to focus on things she "thinks" are more interesting to children, the text is over simplified....etc. I could go on! So, for those who have used it- what did you think?:confused:
  16. We love SOTW -- love, love, love it. However. ;) I've just looked at the table of contents for Volume 4 (starting to think ahead because we are due to finish Volume 3 in March) and it looks, um, kinda boring. I have girls and they are not yet interested in "war stories". Skipping SOTW 4 seems unthinkable, as we have so thoroughly enjoyed Volumes 1 - 3 (well, to be honest, Volume 3 a little less, partly because the audio is by Jim Weiss, partly because pyramids and mummies, knights and castles, are a tough act to follow). The girls LOVE doing projects and activities together, and I will absolutely be getting the AG. Oh, and also I am very excited about both of them using the outlining -- doesn't SOTW4 teach outlining in the AG? They both need to work on that. Beyond that, what are some suggestions? What about something like TOG Year 4, or MFW, or Biblioplan? Or, using the second half of Sonlight's Core 7? (I contemplated using that with SOTW 3 and 4, didn't purchase it for 3, and have kind of regretted it. If I could find it used, I would still gladly invest in it, as I would still use it for a whole year to do SOTW 4) I would love any suggestions, "don't miss" book or movie recommendations, etc.
  17. I love the activity guide for SOTW but we rarely ever seem to get to the crafts. We enjoy doing them when we find the time but it seems like we are on another chapter before I have gathered all the supplies needed for the project. Was wondering if anyone else had this happen or if I was the only disorganized mom. :( Suggestions on a quick and easy system would be great.
  18. Hey all! I am planning on using SOTW for Ancient Times along with the activity book for next year with my dd who will be 6yo. What I am wondering is how do you schedule this week to week? Also, do you use the tests? TIA
