  1. I love Sonlight and The Well Trained Mind. After flip flopping back and forth between these two great curriculum. I finally had an inspirational idea. I took what I liked about both(books and schedule from Sonlight and the physical written work and thought of TWTM) and made them work together. I have worked out a very simple plan that will have these two working side by side. I plan on using a Sonlight Core (Bible, History, Geography and Literature) and completing the following steps weekly. This can vary A bit with every core. 1. List 6-8 facts in complete sentences from core history text (core 6-SOTW 1&2 and core alt7-SOTW 1-4 or Childrs History of the World). Take the chapers assigned to compile sentences from. 2. Mark Dates on Timeline. Use the suggested timeline figures and book of Time on the schedule. 3. Do Mapwork. Use scheduled mapping. 4. Extra history reading. Read the read alouds and readers. 5. Write a 3-8 sentence summary on one of the extra reading texts. 6. Choose one page of text to read that week and outline per grade level. 7. Try to read one primary source document from the time period and complete a simple summery of it. 8. Organize all work in the History Notebook. Now for the organizing of all this material. The History Notebook- create the 10 section notebook listed in TWTM. Fill with all work throughout the year. This is going to give you a great portfolio to record what was learned in each core.
  2. I'm looking ahead a little here, we use TOG in our homeschooling. When my oldest is in 5th she'll go back to Y1 but looking through the booklists there will be many weeks where her reading is limited to the Usborne Ancient World Ency and Bible. We're already doing OT Bible as a family so I'm not planning on her re-reading it then (bc we'll be doing NT then as a family) which means she'll only have the non-Bible readings to complete for TOG - it doesn't look like there will be a huge amount to do...I'm thinking of combining SL Core 5 in to that year for her. I've wanted to find a way to incorporate Core 5 but didn't want to interrupt our TOG cycles either. Has anyone combined these 2 programs for an UG student? Did it work/not work and why? If we do combine we will be using our own science, math, LA etc., just combining the Core History and Readers/Read Alouds with the History readings from TOG. Thanks for the input!:bigear:
  3. Which program do you prefer for their literature/history selections? If you had to choose between these two based solely on the books they use, which would you prefer? What about for comprehension questions and activities to go with the books? If you had to choose between these two based solely on the student questions/activities that to go along with the literature read, which would you go with? I'm looking at upper grammar mostly but my child will be doing some dialectic level books due to solid reading comprehension skills.
  4. I've been a WTM mom for many years, currently doing Omnibus w/ 2 9th graders. Their older brother is in first yr. dual-enrollment at CC. I have a 10yo daughter who is so different them them... past 2 yrs., 3rd & 4th grade, did Portraits of American Girlhood and Prairie Primer (using Homeschool Share's lapbooks and not as many hands-on activities as the Primer). Looking @ Sonlight 3+4 for her for next year because she really seems to like the literature-based history approach. Are there any WTMers out there who also use Sonlight? What are the advantages/disadvantages, and how have you liked it? TIA! Kimm
  5. Is there a place to see what books have been dropped from their curriculum? I would love to see what books have been taken out and what they were replaced with. Thanks :)
  6. I would like some opinions. I currently have a 7th, 5th, 2nd, K and a 4year old and 8mo. old. I have been using sonlight since my 7th grader was in K more or less. I never did core 2 and instead did story of the world 1 and 2 so I did core 1 and story of the world 1&2 for 3 years. This past year I did core 5 with my 7th and 5th grader, core 1 with my 2nd grader and pre4/5 with my K and 4 year old. I am burned out. I can not keep up with 3 cores. So My thoughts and ramblings for next year. Option 1-then 8th and 6th graders do core 6 and I redo core 1 with everyone else using hearts and hands history kits. Option 2- do core 6 and everyone listen to story of the world books(the books used for core 6) and get some hearts and hands history kits to do with the younger kids. I am a little concerned about doing 2 story of the world books in one year but I guess they already have it scheduled. Option 3 - Try TOG year 1 Option 4-? other suggestions
  7. It was suggested to me yesterday that I could use Sonlight with ALL of my kids. I had never looked into Sonlight b/c I thought that each level was for a certain age group. They could not be combined. After this conversation, my curiosity was peaked, and I am now investigating Sonlight for the very first time ( I know- crazy!) Has anyone bought one level and used it for their entire family? I am looking for 6, 4, and 2nd grade next year. From what I am learning, remember- I just started, it looks like you can pick a core and it will overlap several years or grades? Is this accurate and does it really work well? Thanks, Bethany
  8. I am so overwhelmed! :( I want to find the books ans/or complete sets without spending HOURS searching for them. Any suggestions? I am looking for 3/4 set, 4/5, K, 1, 2, 3, and 4. Thanks for your help in advanced! :) PS I do not need Horizons math programs but looking for everything else in each year. :)
  9. Would you have your child start SL if they really do not like to read that much? My dd is 11 and I would love her to do Core 4, she did the history time of Core 3 in ps. However she complains when I want her to read. She wants me to read everything to her. She will read, but resists. I love the looks of SL. Would it be too much for a non reader, or do you think it could inspire a love of reading?
  10. I just checked out Sonlight and am still a little confused. You need to buy one "core" that will last you for 3 years of teaching (1st, 2nd, 3rd grade) and then buy the consumable materials each year for whatever grade level your child is going into? I have a 6 yo and 4 (almost 5) yo I'm looking into starting on Sonlight or Veritas Press. Sonlight seems like it would be fairly easy to combine the two of them and would be less work, I just don't fully understand it yet. Could someone please explain! Thanks!!
  11. I returned many items back to SL a few weeks ago. They told me 12 items were damaged. Charged me to send them back. Talk about petty! These books were not damaged! In fact 3 items were damaged by THEM when the iron fillings opened up inside the box before I got it and scruffed up 3 books! Now they are saying *I* did it. Luckily they have on file that I called and explained what happened and resent me new iron fillings. The other books, I wont attempt to even claim my insurance from the post office. They were barely noticeable. TINY TINY *dents* on one corner of the books. I am very upset with SL...They will refund my money for the items that were damaged by them, saying I damaged them! Sheesh...that company makes so much money you think they could adjust some of these totally minescule *damages* as they call them. I will not do business with SL again...so buyer beware! If you plan on returning items make sure they are very securely packed so they wont move around AT ALL! I'm out 200 bucks thanks to SL
  12. I know I have read things on the Sonlight Boards, but I would like to hear from anyone here who LOVE Sonlight, and would never think of changing to another program. Much appreciated:)
  13. How much will the prices go up? How much has it gone up in the past? I am wondering if I need to go ahead and purchase IG 100 History, since I am not having any luck at the moment finding it used. Any thoughts??
  14. Has anyone found a world history curriculum like Joy Hakim's A History of US? We like her series but not sure what to do for World History when the time comes Thanks
  15. Wow, I just visited *or tried to* Sonlight after receiving mail from them. THey are charging $39. a year to use/visit/read their forums! I've purchased from them a plenty, in the past... but apparently not 'aplenty' enough! K:001_huh:
