  1. Hi everyone, I am revisiting the WTM approach having used a modified version with my oldest who is now 24. Since then I've graduated 1 other always homeschooled child and placed 3 others in high school at one time or another. Next year I will have 3 homeschooling children who will be in 9th, 6th, and 4th grades. I would love to start a 4-year cycle with all of them. My biggest concern is the amount of time Susan outlines in the book. After 20 years of homeschooling, I know from experience that 8 - 9 hour school days will not work for our family. This is mainly due to the fact that my husband works odd hours and I work part time sometimes taking me out of the house by 2 p.m. In addition to the need to drive my high schooler to school in the morning next fall I may possibly need to drive my college students to class some days. It occurred to me that Susan was most likely teaching during at least some of her children's home school years and wondered how she did it -- as well as others of you who have demanding schedules. In an ideal world I would love to cocoon with my kids and just immerse ourselves in TWTM. I would love to hear how others manage it all.
  2. We've been using WTM since I started with my oldest 2 years ago. This fall, I'll be bringing my son into the mix. I'd like to have him do more of a self-directed kindergarten like my middle child did, but his personality wants more interactivity and structure, so I'm wondering how to divvy up instructional time between the three of them, since none are really at ages where they can do a whole lot independently apart from reading. I'll be using SOTW 4 with my oldest (4th grade) and am thinking of dismissing the other two from school an hour early each day, so I can do that. After scouring the forums to research it (SOTW 4 is designed for upper elementary & middle school), I've decided to just not to do history with my younger two (I've had my now early first grader doing SOTW 3 with us this year and it's been a stretch, so basically I just make her listen to the reading and answer a few questions orally - sometimes she does the coloring sheet or copies her older sister's mapwork). But even if I it do that, I'm still not sure how to juggle the other subjects. I can keep them together for science, but for language arts and math, they will all be at their own levels. I am using CLE math for the older two, as it has been working great, so it's mostly the language arts and Kindergarten instruction that I'm concerned about. I wish I could have my oldest do LA more independently since she is gifted in that area, but CLE LA is what we have now and I don't care for it. The other LA programs are more hands-on, so not sure what do with the younger ones while I do that with her, as I don't want to shorten the school day that much with my 2nd grader. ...So what ways have any of you figured out how to balance instruction time with independent work using WTM or MFW or another classical type curriculum with this set of ages? That's another dilemma I have - whether to keep with WTM or use more of a pre-planned program - Does MFW spell out what to do with each age group while working with the other?
  3. I just got our Prima Latina set. How do you schedule and assign this in your school? Example: Monday: watch dvd Tuesday: do workbook Wednesday: listen to cd Thursday: practice with flashcards We have the dvd, cd, flashcards, and workbook. I just watched the first lesson and got the first lesson flashcards out of the large sheets and made one for Deus, God because I could not find one for this word. Thank you for your advice.
  4. My son is in 8th grade going into his freshman year, and is worried he won't get anytime to hang out with his friends and has asked me to compose a light summer school schedule. Can any of you homeschool moms out there help me?
  5. I am trying to figure out if I should schedule 1 day per lesson (teach, lesson and coordinating verbal problems) or do them over two days? Of course I just ordered my verbal book, and have two weeks before I need it, so I am trying to schedule it without seeing the book. :rolleyes: BTW just to be clear this is for my 7th grader. Heather
  6. Hello all, so glad to see that this is such an active forum! I am a HS mom of 3 ages 9, 6 and 3. I am going about things a bit differently this year and trying to have a more CM focus still using my Classical conversations materials as memory work. I am having a hard time making a schedule / time slot for all that is suggested in ambleside online or Easy Homeschooling. Wondering if anyone has a good suggestion for a day plan for teaching a 3rd and 1st grader. Any printable planners out there that you just love that are dummy proof and don't have a lot of spaces you end up not filling in or using? Any suggestions would be great. I really feel like I'm winging it this year and I don't want to provide a substandard education because of my lack of ability to figure out how to "plan" Thanks in advance!:grouphug:
  7. I am using TWTM schedule outline for my third grader, and I'm confused about the reading and history. Is his history reading and narrations included in his structured reading time, or is this reading time only for imaginative/classic works? Or, on the days we do history, is that his structured reading, and on other days his stories are his reading. Thanks!
  8. I'm trying to figure this all out. Latin is new to us, and I just got my materials yesterday. I have the sample schedule from the LFC site, but that doesn't really show me how to schedule in the activity book. Do you do all the activities in one day? Spread them out? Please share how what your week or unit schedule for LFC. :bigear:
  9. I think I have figured out how I want to execute this awesome curriculum. I was hoping some experienced SOTW users would weigh in with your thoughts. There are 94 subsections in total. We try to keep our school year to 36 official weeks. I plan to do history M,W,F. That calculates out to 31 weeks and 1 day of reading/map work/coloring pages. That gives me 14 days of projects and catch up days sprinkled throughout the year. Each day I would do 1 section of reading with the kids coloring while I read, comprehension questions, narration, and corresponding map work. Extra reading and literature would just be "naturally" tied into our normal school, free reading, etc. I don't want the kids to associate reading historical books to be just a "history thing". Clearly if the kids get super excited about something, we'll take extra time on that subject and accomodate accordingly. What do you guys think??
  10. We're doing 4-day History using SOTW Ancients lined up with the VP Greece and Rome cards. I know there are resources available but I don't have time to research right now! We want to read, activity book, etc. Anyone do 4 days? I don't read out of the cards, but my eldest is using them and I want to have a bit of coherence to our history.

Hi everyone, We've completed our first two weeks of school here; I have three DSs (7, 4 and 2) and we're mainly concentrating on the 7 yr. old right now who spent the last two years in public school. We use the curriculum listed below and our general schedule goes like this: 7 a.m.-8 a.m.--kids get up, get ready for the day, do morning tidy-up chores 8 a.m.-8:30 a.m.--breakfast 8:30 a.m.-9:15 a.m.--Music practice time 9:15 a.m.-9:30 a.m.--Bible 9:30 a.m.-10:15 a.m.--Math 10:15 a.m.-10:45 a.m.--Break/read aloud 10:45 a.m.-11:30 a.m.--Language Arts (FLL/CW Primer, Handwriting, Spelling) 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m.--History/Geography or Science 12 p.m.-12:45 p.m.--Lunch/read aloud 12:45 p.m.-1:30 p.m.--Quiet reading time 1:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m.--Languages (Latin or Chinese) 2 p.m.--we aim to be done, but if we haven't finished anything above it goes here. The public school kids are done at 2:30 so I try to keep us finished before then. To keep this schedule, I feel like I'm constantly on the go go go and I don't understand how some moms are able to fit in 2-3 hours of read aloud time a day! Even doing the hour I've indicated above is hard! (I try to fit in another time after dinner for about 30 minutes, so on a good day we're reading aloud 90 minutes but we don't always hit that mark). So I guess my questions are, does what I'm doing seem to make sense? Secondly, am I not giving certain activities enough time, or is this right for the age groups I'm dealing with? (Little brothers join us when we do the history/science, then I try to fit in one-on-one time with them when the eldest is doing more independent work.) Thirdly, how on earth do you fit in more read-aloud time??? One of my goals with homeschooling this year was to give my kids a more relaxed schedule and less stress than what my son had been experiencing with public school. Although we are very busy during school time, once it's done, I just let them play, play, play for the rest of the afternoon. There is part of me that feels like I'm not spending enough time doing school, and that I'm not doing enough to make it fun and memorable, and that my eldest in particular is doing what is asked of him but not really learning or not enjoying it as much as I hoped he would. (He does all the copywork, narration, etc., but I wouldn't say he's thrilled by it!) We are using My Father's World/Adventures during which we covered Leif Ericsson and Columbus, and when I asked him to tell his dad tonight about some of the things he learned about Leif Ericsson, he could hardly remember a thing! Sigh. Anyway, I'm rambling a little here, but I suppose I'd love some reassurance and encouragement that we're on the right track or some suggestions if we are not! Thanks, everyone! Best, Helen
  12. Inspired from a recent thread about schedules, checklists, etc., I am making my own documents to help keep us on track. We work in a loop schedule, but I usually only give my daughter one day's work at a time. However, I wonder if weekly might be better. I am thinking that maybe on Monday she will really be into math, whereas on Wednesday she might not be. So, would it be better to let her keep going in the math on Monday as long as she is happily doing her work, or should I really make her stop and finish up the rest of her daily list before moving on? There are definitely days where she is into math and then days when she is more into spelling, science, etc. That's why I wonder if maybe giving her enough stuff for a week at a time would be better. Why stop her when she's on a roll, right? I usually strive to get 4 days' worth of lessons done in a week. I think this is what I will start doing, but first I want to make sure there aren't any negatives that I'm not thinking of. Have any of you tried this and failed, or do any of you do this currently? What do you like and dislike about it? Thanks in advance!

  14. I am wondering if I'm asking too much of my 4th grade boy. He's 9 and will be 10 next month. In a typical week we plan to do the following (I've listed the time we allot, though his assignments rarely take the whole time): Daily (4 days a week) Math - 60 minutes (Just switched to Horizons 4) Reading - 30 minutes (Various children's classics - he reads then narrates to me) Writing - 15 minutes (WWE level 2) Grammar - 15 minutes (FLL level 3) Spelling - 15 minutes (Spelling Power) Memory Work - 10 Minutes (from FLL) Handwriting - 10 Minutes (Handwriting Without Tears) [edit] Latin - 30 minutes (Latin for Children A) 2-3 Times a week History - 30 minutes (SOTW) Bible - 30 minutes (Alpha Omega Bible 3) Weekly (1 time a week) Robotics club meeting for 1 1/2 hours soccer practice for 1 hour a soccer game on Saturday music lesson & Listening 30 minutes art appreciation and practice - 30 minutes drawing course - 45 minutes How does this compare to what your 4th grader is doing?
