This came to me through my local homeschool group. I think the discount applies only to HSLDA members, if I read the fine print correctly. Hope this helps somebody out! http://www.hslda.org/tour/satprep.asp?elq=7b94d82835584aae81547eb357bfb55a&elqCampaignId=762

I have searched the boards, but it seems that many of the suggestions are for books that will work will with people already in the 600's. I have a family member who scored in the 400-500 range on a practice test that she took with no prep. She is relatively new to the US, but her English has gotten pretty good for the amount of time she has been here. Because she knows her English will cause some challenges, she wants to begin prepping now. She is in tenth grade, and specifically wants to focus on the critical reading. I told her that her Math will likely improve with more math under her belt, but she is also open to suggestions for Math. She has ordered the blue book, as well. Thanks.

The Critical Reader by Erica L. Meltzer I first saw mention of this in a post by ks-sunflower and suggested that my library purchase it. I've had a chance to browse through it today, and it looks both challenging and comprehensive. From the back of the book: "Intended to demystify what is often considered the most challenging section of the SAT in a straightforward, logical manner, The Critical Reader includes: a list of 300 top words, a roots list, and a "second meanings" list, along with 75 practice sentence completions; a complete chapter devoted to each type of question followed by extensive exercises designed to reinforce the skills and concepts presented; and strategies for understanding difficult passages, locating important information, and identifying correct and incorrect answers more quickly and confidently. To allow students to apply the strategies and techniques outlined in this book to College Board material while focusing on the specific areas in which they need to improve, this book also includes a list of all the Critical Reading questions in the Official College Board Guide, 2nd Edition (2009), grouped both by category and by test." On the Amazon link given above, you can read the prefatory material in the book and see the table of contents. There is also a good selection of customer reviews (mostly positive, a few negative). If you are looking for SAT prep materials, this is a book to consider. The author has also written The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar, 2nd ed. which I've not seen but the first edition has excellent reviews. Regards, Kareni

Hi Everyone, I'm a long time board user, but haven't posted much in years. When the boards switched over from the old format I saw it as my opportunity to get more school work done and less socializing! But here I am to post about the NYT. After a bit of talking with the New York Times, I was finally able to secure an educator's discount. Previously they had been unable to provide a discounted rate. For me anyway. So in case any of you would like to get their discount (and have had trouble) I wanted to post here about how I acquired my subscription: 1) Fax a copy of your students' ID cards to 563-285-2815. If you don't have cards, you can make them up or obtain free ones from the Homeschool Buyers Coop. (I also noted on this one-page fax my name, address, and wrote "for homeschool/educator discount") You must do this step first. 2) After you've faxed your proof, call 800-698-4637 and ask for the Account Resolutions department. 3) Tell them you are a homeschooler that has faxed in the required ID and would like to sign up for an educator's discount. If you have any trouble with the agent not being aware of homeschoolers getting discounts, you can then ask for Trudy - who was very kind and receptive to the idea of homeschoolers getting discounts. Since every SAT prep class we've been a part of has recommended that my children read at least one NYT article a day, I'm very thankful for this discount. I hear that the NYT is the best subscription for SAT quality vocabulary, as well as the best for providing excellent, well-written articles on current events. Hope this helps someone. We are already enjoying our online access as well as the NYT Learning Network (the latter should be free to everyone regardless of whether you have any subscription). Oh, and FYI, I went with the print edition to be sent to my home on Saturdays and Sundays (for $3.60/wk) which gives me access to the NYT online for Monday-Sunday (and access to their app). The Sunday edition is especially good in print vs. online. HTH, Michele P.S. Hi to everyone from the old days! Who's still around?

I know this might sound like a ridiculous question but I'm honestly curious about this. What is the 'right age' to begin SAT prep? My mother works for a private classical high school and the administrator asked me about that this morning. We are baby homeschoolers so this hadn't even crossed my mind yet. Now I'm all frantic, thinking I need to add something. My goodness, my kids are 7 & 9. SAT Prep? Really? :001_huh:

My daughter needs to raise her SAT score, there is a highly recommened SAT prep class near us. There is no guarantee on rasing the score, or how much it will be raised, and it is $500 for a 6 week class. The class meets once a week for 2 hours. Is this worth it, a rip off? What are our other options? This seems like a lot of money with no guarantee, but then again if it raises her score significantly then it is well worth the money. This is for my oldest who will graduate in 2013. Would love to hear what others have done and recommend.

With dd, I was able to sign up to get the SAT qod and started to do them myself. After awhile, both dd and myself came to the same conclusion - they seem so easy - usually. I never did go through the books that ds3 used to prep for the actual exam, so am now wondering - has anyone compared these practice questions (received by email each day) to the ones in the prep books? and to the actual exam? Are they all the same in difficulty? Does anyone have any other observations about these emailed questions? Thanks, Joan

I've been lurking (again) for ages now, but since dd 17 is finishing her jr year and college stuff is looming, I'm back with lots of questions. I'm considering purchasing the Kaplan SAT Online Test prep. Homeschool Buyers Co-op has it for $49.95 until tomorrow. I'm wondering if anyone has used it and what your experience was. I've done some searching online and it seems that all of the paid test prep courses get mixed reviews (along the lines of questioning whether or not they really increase scores as much as advertised). - DD's PSAT scores were Critical Reading 51, Math 49, Writing Skills 51. Not too bad, I guess, but probably not good enough to get her where she wants to go. I'm hopeful that the on-line course will help her structure her study time, since right now she keeps putting it off to concentrate on homework and work. Thanks!

mamato4girls posted a topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Looking for recommendations on SAT prep. Books, DVD's, online classes, this is my first one taking the SAT next year, and I am totally clueless! Thank you! -
Are there favorites for SAT prep? Has anyone used the one that HSLDA has? Thanks!
