  1. or would have made if you had another to teach? Since dd is only in 9th, I still have several years to go and am curious how others have changed their program.... I'm finding some things so much easier with dd - in some ways I'm more flexible and in others more strict.... Some of the ways I'm less strict: We're using WEM much more! And other literature guides less... We don't always read the whole book. Nor do we go through every page of literature analysis guides...While for some books we will go through piece by piece, I find it more interesting to cover more books but some at a lighter level and some almost cursory (eg Moby Dick). Some ways I'm more strict: With R & S grammar, I'm going over the oral reviews for each lesson and through most of the exercises. We're spreading the lessons over several days sometimes to make sure that she has a thorough grasp. Her diagramming skills are great now. We haven't finished the 8th grade book because I realized that is really the last book about grammar in the series (9 & 10 cover a bit but other stuff mostly) so I realized this is really her last time through and she has to 'get it' now or never. Math - we're using a more difficult series starting in 7th grade already... Other changes: Talking more about various subjects.... Other changes but not necessarily for the better: She's doing AP HG in 9th and her bro did it in 10th....I'm finding that she is spending much more time on it than he did....But she is also writing more in her answers - being somewhat more of a perfectionist....Still, overall, not sure if it is worth the extra time and might have been better next year. But (you can see I'm going back and forth about this), it is making her mature in a way that I wanted her to be before getting into 10th grade, helping her be more aware of the world.... Joan
  2. My oldest has a difficult time getting through his day. We talked some more and figured out what he needs. It seems so obvious now :glare: Is there a planner which has the daily schedule with hours listed down the left sheet and the Daily assignments with those listed down the right sheet or vise versa? It seems like planners are either one or the other or they have two separate sections. It may sound dumb, but he will not shift back and forth between sections. If not, I will make him something. I just don't have a printer currently because ALL THE NON-BREATHING THINGS are rapidly dying around me. It would be so nice if I could just order it.
  3. The toughest thing for me the last couple months, with homeschooling four kids, has been getting everyone's work scheduled. I think what I'm going to try to do over the next couple of days is assign all the kids' work through January. Is anyone else working on lesson planning?
  4. Has anyone stuck with and continued using the WPD online planner, while it's in beta/alpha/whatever stage? I have a subscription, and am thinking about starting to use it during our holiday break, but not if it's still really glitchy. Experiences?
  5. Hi there, I have so many things up in the air in life right now, including what I will teach next, and even if my kids will be in PS this fall or not. But for right now, I need something to get a fix on things. Of course, I can do this myself but I bet y'all have some tricks, Parent workbooks, computer programs, etc. that you use to keep on track with what you will teach and when. This is not because I intend to stick directly to a plan or believe that I actually can complete whatever plan I come up with (which will always be too much), but just looking for tricks of the trade to just keep me a little more "honest." Thanks!

  7. We have yet to ever just have some kind of normal in our home. New jobs, moves, unexpected babies, military service, deployments, going back to college as adult students, special needs children, solo parenting, depression. This years whopper was my dh moving out of state. We have no plans about what comes next. I will keep homeschooling. But, yet again i failed at keeping a schedule of any sorts. No one finished their books. Our biggie for the year. My delayed 9yo has finally started reading and his speech is improving along with his reading skills!!!!! We have been on a wee break. Tomorrow is Monday and I am going to have everyone pile up their books and make a schedule to get it all finished. I am going to write it on paper. I will not be spending hours on the computer trying to make the perfect schedule or plans. Mainly because cause my printer broke. Which I would replace except I need that money to fix my van:tongue_smilie:
  8. Apart from having a general idea of what you’ll accomplish for a year, how do you do your lesson planning? Do you plan your days down to the minute, or do you play each day by ear? And how has your style of planning changed over the years? Poll to follow (if I get it right this time!)
  9. I'm wondering how far people go when planning out the new school year. Previously I have chosen and collected the curriculum and I sit down once a week to plan out what's going to happen in the upcoming week. This approach is not working for my daughter or I. We are behind in a number of subjects which has interrupted a planned summer-long break. I have sat down with a monthly calendar and mapped out what should be done when (i.e., Monday new SOTW ch, WWS, SM, etc). Reading what other people do it sounds like they plan out the whole year in advance, day by day what page in each subject will be done along with holidays and the like. So how do you plan out a new school year? What do you use to do it with? Can you hand your kids a sheet of assignments for a day and have said child get them all done?
  10. Hi All! I would LOVE to hear from some of you with experience how you break down your homeschooling time for a kindergartner...AND if you use Classical Conversations, how you tie the CC material in with everything else you're teaching. I have a long list of subjects I want to begin teaching my daughter (who just turned 5), but it's pretty overwhelming when I sit down and try to plan out how each day will look. I want to start each day with Calendar Time and spend about 20 minutes on all the calendar stuff, weather, lunar phase, etc., tying in some writing exercises. I think I have a pretty solid plan for that part. But I also want to teach: Phonics/Reading Math Handwriting History Geography Science Art/Music Memory Work Do you teach some subjects only two or three times a week, and others you teach every day? Is there a golden equation for how much time to spend each day total, then how to break it up per subject (e.g. no more than ___ hour(s) total per day, broken up into no more than __ separate subjects, and spread out over __ amount of time.) Also, we will be doing Classical Conversations on our own at home, following the materials used for that. And I'm wondering if I should just lump all the CC stuff into one category called "Memory Work," focusing strictly on the memorization of those items and not trying to turn it into a full history lesson, geography lesson, etc. Your thoughts are very much appreciated and anticipated! :) All the best, Hope
  11. What's your method? Do you stay on track? Should I do it? Or should I do my old approach: Basically figure out how many pages I need to do per day and take it one day at a time.:tongue_smilie: For those who plan all your days over the summer, do you literally look up the extra activities and movies to go with THAT particular lesson on THAT day... months ahead of time? How detailed do you get?? Do you use a paper planner? Homeschool tracker? Tips or suggestions? :bigear:
  12. Let's hear it for moms who love to research curriculum and plan for the next year! We just finished up, and faced down our first year with a lamb at the fair (crazy and fun!), and I am ready to plan out next year. Crazy. But it feels good to have a project to set my mind to without the pressure of schooling gnawing at me. Anybody else happy to be here too? Melissa
  13. I was looking at the items on their pre-release sale and ran across this. We are planning to utilize ipads for the older kids, and this looks so tempting! I am now re-thinking the paper planner. There. I said it. (WPD is the only planner that I have used consistently).
  14. I need to do some things to help finish up this year. DH is moving a few states away. I am here till April. April and May we will stay with SIL. We use a VA, so breaks are not an option. I was thinking of filling out some cards with the entire week. Math Lesson and have 5 of them. Then they can go in a jar or container. When it is empty, they are done. We need to super simplify because I am taking as little as possible to SIL house. I will be able to get into storage once a week if needed. But, I don't plan to clutter her house anymore than 6 people need to. Edited to add....Maybe I need to rephrase myself. My SIL has a beautiful B and B on a lake where I want to relax and spend two months getting myself together. We have to finish up school becuase we use a VA/umbrella type of program. She is a former hs ( her kids grew up) and art teacher. She is awesome and more like a Grandma than an Aunt. I can store stuff in the garage which is just a door away through the mudroom from the downstairs room. I want to simplify and make some things easier on my brain. Does that help any? I thought some kind of cards would help my visual learner since chorepacks help so much. By June, we will be moving partly because that is her busy season and partly because that is when it is nice enough for me to move to the cold state that my dh will be at.

I am struggling with knowing we could do more if i had it better laid out and ready to go. it my day was open and go, I am confident we'd be getting more done with less stress for me, and i think better focus from DS1 also. but i am feeling like i am treading water, barely a day ahead of DS1. How do you do it? each night for the next day? Once a week? talk to me on a very practical level about planning and teacher prep -- :bigear::bigear::bigear:
  16. Which one do you like and why do you like it? I have to admit that I've never planned-ever.:tongue_smilie: I school in 12 week sessions, and until now have just filled in each day what we finished. Also-do your dc have the exact same system, or do you let them choose their own? TIA!
  17. I can't seem to figure out how to be the most efficient with my organizing the schoolwork we plan to do this next year. I am NOT good about planning months in advance because I don't know how to change everything when we miss a day. We are using HOD and CC so it should be easy...but I just don't know what papers/manuals to put where and how to have it organized in way where I can plan (about a week) ahead. I know I'm over thinking it. We are using Phonics Road which has teacher/student manual, Rightstart-manual and manipulatives, some worksheets, Little Otters Science and Meet the Masters. None of our subjects have many worksheets (except PR) but are mostly lesson plans. I planned on putting all papers in a teacher's binder, but then I saw how much room each set of lesson plans took up. I thought I wanted to give my daughter her own binder, but wasn't sure what I would put in it. I thought maybe I would just put a couple weeks worth of each subject in her binder but then thought it should go in mine if that is where I am doing my planning. Then I thought maybe I should just give each subject (science, art, math, hod, CC) it's own binder since PR already had it's own. Then maybe put a weeks worth of plans for each subject in mine?? I'd love to hear what other people do. Or if anyone has any ideas to slap me out of this I would love to hear it. More than anything I wanted everything easy to grab so I could plan it all at one time for the next week.
  18. I have decided to do my own version of Guest Hollow science this coming year. I am using a ton of her ideas and changing some to suit my kids. My question is I have the older boys and the little girl, so when I plan would it be easier to plan hers, theirs or just do both at the same time? Some activities and all they will do together some are just for her age for her while others will be above as the boys are older. So would it be easier to go week by week or do the different ages seperate?
  19. How does this look in your home? What to you do to avoid burnout? How do you transition from one grade leveled subject to another? Especially, with multiple kids? What does your planner look like? When do you find the time to plan? I know, a lot of questions. I have hit a burn out phase. I was trying to plan out our next year, while maintaining our core subjects. We have had some recent family issues develop...and I finally decided to take a week or so off. I am feeling better, but now I am putting serious thought into how I go about year round schooling. I still feel this is the best route for our famly, but I am looking for more concrete ways to implement it. I also noticed that my kids have started to play well together again. Almost as if they weren't getting enough down time together. I want to maintain academic rigor, but I also feel the need to plan in down time. Not sure if this makes sense to anyone.
  20. My homeschool planner needs a makeover and that is my project for this month. Please tell me what yours looks like and maybe I will get some good ideas to copy. :001_smile: Here is what I have planned so far. I have been using a one inch binder and I have 2 sheet weekly planner I print for each of my boys. I got the original from the Donna Young website but adjusted it to fit for me. I just adjusted it again to get both my boys on it and using just one binder instead of one for each. We are combining a lot of stuff next year and I want everything in one place. I plan to make those planning sheets a "at-a-glance" and then I am just putting notebooking paper behind each week to have details for everything and too keep notes for things needed for our state laws. Not fancy, but should work fine. I love to organize so I would love to hear how everyone else does theirs.

I haven't been at this very long but what I have discovered is I must plan out my weeks instead of just opening a book and teach as I go especially now that I am homeschooling all my kids instead of just the one as was the case when I first started in January 2010. When I first started with my 7th grader I didn't really plan we just opened and went, changed things as needed and stayed on a topic until she had it. I can't really do that with three kids. So as I am piecing together the plans for my 5th & 7th grader (9th grader is doing an open and go curriculum), I am wondering if most moms roughly plan out all 36-40 weeks of the school year. It seems so time consuming to go through each resource and plan out which concepts and assignments will be done week after week. I do understand you may have to change things around but do most of you have the whole year planned before you start?
  23. I am overwhelmed by the embarrassment of riches for HSing out there, many of them found thanks to WTMers. My browser bookmark list is a mile long of free curriculum, vintage books, online tutorials and other things to check out. I have magazine articles cut out from HS magazines and stuffed into folders. I have science kits stuffed into cupboards for future use (they were on clearance). I have all these.. and I sit down and do the same old with DS. I really want to do better next year! Now, part of it is recognizing that Rome wasn't built in a day, and my DS isn't going to be able to do those science kits, or art projects for awhile. But I don't want to go past a topic, and then kick myself when I realize I had some great find stashed away. So here's a plea for help: How do you all keep track of what you want to do, and when you want to use it?
  24. where do I begin to plan for next year? I made this hs decision so suddenly and am just beginning curriculum in january for year 1. how far before a new "school year" starts are you all prepared? cuz i'm just pluggin along as i go and buying books whenever i can. which is all i ever did anyway.
