  1. My boys love math games and apps. Here are some of our current favorites. Apps: Math evolve Dragon box Anything by the Monkey Math people Actual games: UNO (good for # recognition and planning) A game where I write numbers in the bottom of each spot in an egg carton, put in two marbles and the add up the numbers the marbles land on. As you can see, we need more non-screen suggestions
  2. My daughter has (undiagnosed, but suggested by a tutor and I think she's right) dyscalculia. She's 10 and really struggling with multiple steps problems but also has low processing speed and inattentive ADHD. Her tutor has suggested drilling her constantly, daily, in order to get her to know her "math language". Well, this does not work on her, it only makes her shut down and zone out. She does, however, love to play games with me. We recently bought Zeus on the Loose and she LOVES it! I know most games involve math, but are there any other great ones you'd suggest? I'd rather spend the money on games than on a tutor (since that got us zero improvement). Also.... she's "behind" in math, so I hate to consider this... but do you think we could drop formal math for a few weeks and just play several games a day? Her confidence in math has dropped so much that it's affecting how she sees herself as a person. Interested in *any* advice you can give me. And curriculum suggestions... I really don't think this is a curriculum issue so I'd like to not make this thread about that. Thanks!
  3. Is there anyone here who has ever used the right start math card games as review/reinforcement? How did you like them?? I'm thinking they might be a great solution for my 8yo who is very kinesthetic and loves games!
  4. This would be for my 6 year old that is using Singapore 1A and working on number bonds. I am looking for ANY ideas but, would like to stay away from basic drill and flashcards for right now. Thank you!
  5. I am looking for all of my kiddos. I need to get some of the redundancy out of our math lessons! Ds's K and 1st -- I would like the games to be something they can play together with me if possible. 4th grader and 8th grader anything you can recommend would be awesome! Dd 4th is good in math. No issues. Dd 8th is getting there. She had a HUGE math phobia we are still working on overcoming, that is why we are doing Lials BCM this year. So far so good. She is gaining the confidence she needs and doesn't dread math anymore! She should be done with this and move onto VideoText algebra something late winter/early spring. So anything pre-algebra to Algebra 1 for her would be awesome if anything exists!! (free online is the best ofcourse but any recommendations would be awesome!!) TIA! :001_smile:
  6. I played this with DD today for about an hour! Someone mentioned it the other day and I had to get a deck of cards first. We played it so you could do addition or subtraction with 2 or more cards and she was bummed that we had to quit playing it but I need to get lunch done. I think it really helped to have her add and subtract in a competitive manner. For those that missed the link (I don't have the link either) but here is the gist of it. Each player gets 4 cards in the hand and there is 4 cards laying face up on the table. You have to add (and we did subtract) your cards to equal something in the face up pile. DD soon figured out that she could add stuff in her hand and make it add up to 2 cards in the face up pile, too! It was amazing and fun. Much better than go fish (which is the only other card game I know).
  7. My dd started 3rd grade at a private school this year. We are very busy and by the time she studies spelling, does her homework, does her required reading, etc..... she is not up for doing more "homework." I need afterschooling things that are fun and can be done in short increments (like the Right Start games.) She is doing Saxon in school. We are using Right Start games, Sum Swamp, card games, computer games, wrap-its, flashcards, etc... to keep up her facts. So, I want to go deeper with her. Something like Singapore Challenging Word Problems, but not in that format? Logic puzzles? Computer games? Good board games? I'm vague, because I don't know what I want. I've thought of chess, but honestly, I only know how the pieces move and I feel like I'm ill-equipped to use that as her deeper thinking exercise. I'm planning on using the CWP over the summer, but I want something we can do during the school year. Something to take the math deeper. Make her really think. Problem solve. :bigear:
  8. There's been a few threads about math fact drill / practice lately; thought my recent blogpost might be helpful. My boys have tested out all 5 apps and declared them 'keepers', and I am happy to see them enjoying math drill via games and creative puzzles. I'll be doing more blogposts on other math apps we're enjoying that cover other areas of math (all 4 operations, fractions, etc.) in the coming weeks. http://educatingrisa.com/2011/07/07/5-fun-free-math-apps-for-addition/ I'd love to hear about other math apps your kids enjoy.
  9. Does anyone have any favorite iPad apps for addition facts? DD#2 is getting ready to move into Multiplication in SM-1B and I like to give her a fun "game day" to celebrate the end of the Numbers to 40 section this Fri. I'd really like it to be ! Am looking on iTunes but also hoped someone here would have a fave! Thanks!
  10. I am putting math books away for a few months to focus on concepts and facts. Please share your favorite math games .... links if you have any... I am looking for both home made and bought, and ones that use our math manipulatives...like geo-boards, pattern blocks, or cuisinairre rods. Please share! Faithe
  11. Or games I can make up myself? I just received Sum Swamp in the mail today and am super excited about playing it with the kids. I would like to have math game time at least once a week, maybe more, so I'd love more math game ideas. So far, we are only at addition/subtraction, but any others I'll file away for future reference. Thanks!
  12. I'm looking for any sort of educational games good for 7 years old and up. Thanks!
  13. I just looked at this sight and YIKES!!!! That is some expensive game ther! Does anyone know if there is a site online for math games that are similar to right start? I already have tons of manipulatives, rods, clocks, geo-boards, pattern blocks...you name it! Now I would like some games to use with these fun things that isn't going to cost me a weeks pay! Thanks! Faithe
  14. I'm still stressing over what math program to use next year. Dd7 used to enjoy math, but now she tells me that it is no longer "fun." It's boring. This is our first year using MUS, and I just don't think it's the program for us. She rarely uses the blocks, and the plain black and white pages are, apparently, uninteresting. Does anyone have a more fun math suggestion?
  15. I've read all the threads for a few months, and I'm still trying to decide what to do between now (when she's almost done with the Decimals and Percentages) and when we do Pre Algebra. One of my questions is: What are the requirements for being able to start Pre-Algebra? (Wouldn't mind having some games to play to help....) Is there a scope-and-sequence that I should have for what you need to be able to do?? I mean, if you pass the LOF Decimals/Percentages test, then you go on?? I've been looking for a math program that we can either do together, or one that she can read and do by herself. (I don't want TT) I want a math that will teach/ explain the theory of math as she's doing it. I really would prefer something that's not a DVD, but wouldn't hold that against a program, if it's the best. She's only 10, so I'm fine with doing something from now - September that is "just getting ready" for Pre-Algebra. (Hoping for Pre-Algebra for 6th, Algebra for 7th, Algebra for 8th, Geometry for 9th, Pre-Calculus for 10th, and then??? after that for the last two years. Will depend on her desires and how she sticks to my time table.) Thanks! Carrie:-)
