  1. I’ve been reading The Well-Trained Mind and I’m wondering if anyone has been able to use this method with a child with Down Syndrome or another developmental delay. I know the 4th Edition has a chapter on learning difficulties but that seemed to be more about having your child tested if you suspect they have some sort of learning difficulty. What if I already know she has a developmental delay? Is The Well-Trained Mind achievable for someone like my daughter?

Our library has a book that appears to be pretty new (copyright 2016, with no previous years listed), not just a revised edition of an older book, so I thought I'd share it. https://www.amazon.com/College-Success-Students-Disabilities-Real-World-ebook/dp/B01CGSEU4K#nav-subnav The author, Irene Ingersoll, has "recently retired" as a disability coordinator for a college in High Point, NC. After a section that applies to all disabilities, the book is organized by types of disabilities and includes real life experiences. She includes sections on self-advocacy, lists of colleges with robust disability services, and technology.

I happened on this book at the library while looking for something else and was caught by the title: Dyslogic Syndrome: Why Millions of Kids are "Hyper," Attention-Disordered, Learning Disabled, Depressed, Aggressive, Defiant, or Violent--and What We Can Do About It by Bernard Rimland. I have not finished it yet. Rather than say more at this point, other than that it is changing how I am thinking about a lot of things I see IRL and read on these boards, I'd like to put it out here and hope that others will read it too and then want to discuss it.   4. Anyone had their kid totally fail the Iowa Test of Basic Skills? Our oldest took it for the first time last month and I got the results back today. When dh and I were kids, our composite percentile was always 98 or 99. Alas! DS's composite percentile was 2. Seriously - there were many sections of the test where he could have done better had he just randomly filled in the blanks - he would get 1 out of 8 right or 0 out of 6 (and that's out of the questions he attempted, not just out of all of them including ones he didn't get to). Granted, we do a Charlotte Mason approach with lots of reading aloud and very little seat work. For math, we were doing Math Mammoth but DS got overwhelmed with worksheets so we switched to Ray's which I do orally with him. Spelling is done orally. We don't do map drills (though we look at maps and talk about where things happened). We cover capitalization and punctuation in copywork and dictation, but ds is notorious for copying all the words and leaving out all of the punctuation (and I do point out to him what he missed and make him fix it). But seriously, he totally bombed the test. When he took it I knew things weren't going well because he told me he finished early and got to read his book but then I got an email from the admin after the first day saying he didn't finish the tests and filled in a lot of "D" answers. The next day when I dropped him off, I looked at his test and showed him in the book how to know when he was finished with a test. I also explained that if he was putting the same answer for more than two questions in a row, he was probably answering some of them incorrectly. He did finish the tests better the second day. So I wasn't expecting stellar results. We don't have to do the test for reporting purposes - it was just for our own use. But we would like our kids to do well on tests as that is a very easy way to qualify for college and scholarships and such. DS will be 9 in July - his birthday is 5 days before the current cutoff (it used to be 3 months later than it is now) so maturity could be a factor. But still...do I need to embroider a scarlet F for FAIL to my bodice? Yikes!
  5. I have posted numerous times with regard to my DD8 who struggles with math. I have thought she has a math disability. We have no health insurance so I utilized the public school system for testing. She has just finished her testing and I have spoken to the school psychologist who says her math scores are extremely low and she definitely sees a math disability. The meeting with their "team" has not yet happened so she didn't want to give me anymore details as of yet since it is supposed to be done as a "team" with the others that have tested her in other areas. The public school system in my State only offers help if the child needs speech therapy as a homeschooler. I have really been contemplating the idea of putting her in the public school thinking they have the resources to really help her as far as a math disability or any other disability they may find (reading, etc.) Anyway, if you were in my position, would you still keep your child at home and try other strategies (even if you feel you have tried everything) or would you register your DC in the public school to receive the help needed?

Next year will be my first year officially homeschooling both my children ds8 who will be doing bigger hearts and dd4 who will be in little hearts and I'm having a really tough time coming up with a schedule. I feel like I'll have to spend so much one on one time with ds because he has learning disablilites and needs almost everything presented one on one. What kinds of things should my daughter be doing while I'm working with my son? How do you guys plan your days with more than one child? I just don't want my dd to be bored or to get lost in the shuffle.
