  1. Let's do a 4-level analysis of this sentence: Every day I take a nap. What part of the sentence is EVERY DAY? Is it some sort of phrase? It seems like a prepositional phrase modifying TAKE, but the dictionaries call EVERY an adjective. Thanks for your help!
  2. So if you finished FLL4, what are you going to do now? Our previous plan was to go on to ALL, but now having spent the summer looking at different language arts programs, I think we'll go on to Analytical Grammar with some independent memorization thrown in there too. What am I forgetting?
  3. It seems like R&S Grammar bogs down in 6th or 7th grade. My children (all boys so far) start with the 3rd grade book after doing First Language Lessons for 2 years. We do this book together. Then in 4th they work through the lessons and have to do about 1/2 to 3/4 of the lesson practice. Then we do the other 1/2 to 1/4 orally. They do fine and do well on the tests....but then it all seems to fall apart! All the different clauses and similarly named things seem to get very confusing to my boys. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem?? Is there something that would better serve us? I was looking at Easy Grammar, but was concerned about not diagramming sentences. Grammar has become a burden to the children.......do I just plug along, or should we try something else?? Thanks, Deb
  4. There is always discussion about skipping English grammar if Latin is being covered. Has anyone seen the new Memoria Press's new "English Grammar for the Grammar Stage"? Does this look like a way to condense what you need to know when focusing on Latin in the pre-high school years? Could this book be covered each year? Has anyone thought about this? I am beyond this, but wandering about advising others. Thanks,
  5. I think I have decided to go with Rod and Staff English with my daughter this fall (4th grade). However, we've never done a formal grammar program, and I'm wondering which level I should start her with. Her experience with grammar has only been with copywork/dictation with WWE. Is there a great deal of difference between levels with R&S? Should I go with grade level, or back up a bit to play catch up? Thanks!
  6. If you don't use a formal grammar program and just approach grammar as you teach writing, etc, can you tell me how? Or is there a book that would help guide me? Not sure I'm asking this right. :confused: For example, we are using IEW SWI-A. I edit dd's paper and hand it back to her to write her final draft. I can edit well (actually edit documents for a living) but I can't explain to her the *why* of things. *Why* does it need a comma there, etc. I need something that will help me understand how to explain things to her, using the correct terminology.
  7. When it comes to grammar, we just want to get it done. Really. I don't want a grammar program that we are going to have to do every day for 8 years. :001_huh: I want to have a short, sweet, to-the-point grammar program that we can work through and then get our practice through our writing assignments. What program would be good for this?
  8. Like Vocabulary From Classical Roots? I see WTM recommends Rod and Staff and Analytical Grammar. Rod and Staff will not fly with this child. I'll try to look at Analytical Grammar. Anyone have any other suggestions? It needs to be interesting, not deadly dull LOL! TIA!
  9. DD (10) is wanting a grammar workbook or program that she can do by herself. I'm looking at Spectrum and Evan-Moor but other ideas are welcome. She's completed most of FLL level 4, and isn't appreciative of MCTLA's playfulness with words, plus she wants to be able just to "get it done." TIA!
  10. Not part of a set (think Abeka), but an independent grammar program. We have used FLL for 1st grade and half of 2nd grade and I like it but I'm not sure it's working for us. I really don't know what else is out there. :blushing: Thanks for your help!
  11. Harvey's grammar looks good but I was wondering if you could tell me what the difference is between the Revised Grammar and the Elementary Grammar and Composition? The Revised English Grammar covers orthography, syntax, and prosody, according to an Amazon review. It sounds a little unusual and I'm not sure whether or not it covers standard grammar, since the descriptions are kind of unusual? I can't find too much info on the Elementary Grammar and Comp. Can someone tell me about these books? Thanks!!

It has been recommended to me as a great starting place to remediate my pathetic education in grammar and composition.:001_smile: The problem is that there are about 10,000 editions and the teacher's guides cost $200+. Will I be able to use this WITHOUT a TG? Since I don't know my grammar or composition I can't imagine that being feasible. If it IS possible, WHAT edition do I want? Sheesh. I researched this thing to death and ended up :banghead:. I'm tempted to let this one go and look for another "self educating" option for myself. I MUST work on grammar and composition or I CANNOT go on with home schooling. I'm desperate....

I know SWB recommends quite a few years of formal grammar in TWTM, the edition that I have recommends Abeka, and I know she also recommends R&S and that FLL certainly drills a lot of formal grammar. I had lots of creative writing in public school in middle school. When I transferred back to Catholic school in the end of 7th grade, I was taught formal grammar. They were diagramming extremely difficult sentences and I picked it up within two weeks and was at the head of my 8th grade class. My classmates had 5 years of formal grammar, and I had none at that point. Another thought is, that in high school we rarely talked about grammar except in Spanish class, and I had no problems there either. The book and teacher explained during the lesson what she was talking about. She might begin a lesson by saying, today we are going to learn about the Spanish predicate. Then she would explain what that was. In context, none of us had difficulty. I'm just thinking that writing often, and writing a lot, and correcting grammar errors as they pop up in writing, as well as using GUM drops, is enough until about 8th grade. At that point, I think a grammar refresher would be in order to help with high school foreign language, for my dd. My son will not need it because he learns Grammar in his Greek lessons. Any thoughts? Does anyone else feel like 6 years of formal grammar is a waste? AKA I'm thinking of dropping all formal grammar from 1st- 7th grade.
  14. I've also posted on the MCT board, but just in case someone over here is up... :) Let's start with #74: "None of the fish was red or blue." The "was" hurts my ears. To me, the sentence is screaming for the plural verb "were." I've spent too long this evening looking this issue up online only to read lots of debate on the subject (many agreeing that a plural verb form is acceptable). Can someone weigh in on the matter? Is "were" correct, too? Moving on to #73: "The swarming squid ate almost all of it." I'm going out of order since "none" in #74 is classified as a pronoun. I get that, an indefinite pronoun like "everything" and "nothing" touched on earlier in PI. However, in #73 "all" is classified as a noun. I've looked this up, too, this evening and I keep seeing it used as an indefinite pronoun. Is this a typo? Thanks for any insight on the matter(s).
  15. Any thoughts? Is MLA or ALA what is used most often in college? I am doing some editing work and am wondering what the latest standards are in different situations, such as commas in a series, etc. I also would like to use this book as a reference for our grammar study in our homeschool. Any thoughts appreciated!
  16. I'm sure this is old news to many, but I wanted to post this for the newbies or those who may have missed it. Grammar-Land by M.L. Nesbitt was written in 1878 and is def. NOT dull or boring. GL would make a great Grammar intro or supplement. I would somewhat liken it to Life of Fred, but for Grammar.   17. Shallow as it may sound, that has become one of the most important curriculum standards: not boring. My oldest is bored to tears (our life right now has alot to do with that and there's nothing I can do about it) and my second 2 children have attention issues and need to be captivated. We've done A Beka, Rod and Staff, tried Easy Grammar and are currently in BJU grammar. The programs are just so dry! And I love grammar! We love Teaching Textbooks for math. Is there anything like that for Grammar?
  18. So here is my dilemma. We have used First Language Lessons since the beginning. We are finishing the level 3 grammar book this week. My daughter is halfway through 4th grade. I would like her to do Analytical Grammar at some point in middle school, then their high school reinforcement books in 9-12 grade. She LOVES grammar and she wants to be an author, so I'd like her to continue it every year. My main question is this: How do First Language Lessons Grammar levels 3 and/or 4 flow into Analytical Grammar (AG)? Is diagramming similar in the two? If we continued to level 4 of FLL, would it make sense to begin AG in season two, or are things done differently enough that we'd begin AG in season one still? (link to what is taught in each season of AG: http://www.analyticalgrammar.com/faq#aggradelevel ) Also, with baby 4 on the way, I would really, really like to switch to a grammar program that is more self-taught than FLL. I really like the looks of GROWING WITH GRAMMAR (GWG), and I think she'd enjoy it, but I don't want to jump to that and then switch to AG later on. Unless those flow together pretty seemlessly too. Anyone know?? Additionally, because FLL level 3 and 4 do offer tons of diagramming, which is her favorite part of grammar, I'm concerned GWG and AG might not have as much diagramming as FLL, and that initially it would be a step backwards in that regard. That's how it appears from their samples. OR, if we switched to GWG and did that through book 8 (starting with book 5 after FLL 3?), and THEN went to the AG High School Reinforcement books, would that work well? Or are the two completely different and we'd have to go through AG anyhow in order to understand the AG high school workbooks?? I am spending days and days trying to figure this out, and still cannot decide. I really need first hand experience/advice!!! Please chime in!!!!! THANK YOU!
  19. I love Audio books, but too often homeschooling parents use these in place of reading. I've written a blog post about this: http://www.knittedthoughts.com/2011/11/reading-versus-audio-books.html because as a writing teacher who regularly tutors and works with homeschoolers in Writing Enrichment classes, I see this as a trend that can have some unfortunate consequences (especially when it comes to grammar, mechanics and spelling). A good balance between eye-on-the-page reading and audio books is what works best!
  20. Something without a lot of writing. The rules for capitalization, e.g., are just not sticking. Does G U M do this? Perhaps something that gives 4 choices, only one of which is correct, which we can go over verbally ("Why isn't this one correct?"). I know I could make my own, but gosh my day is full. Thanks.
  21. I'm trying to make curriculum selections for my 6 y.o. for this fall semester which I hope to begin in Sept. (Prior to this we've been "unschooling.") I've got everything figured out (I think) except grammar/spelling/language arts. He's been reading fluently since 4. I'm not sure if I can take credit for teaching him, or if you would call him self-taught. He spent a lot of time playing around on Starfall, and I read to him a lot, and we did go through the first quarter or third of Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. From there he just took off on his own. My point is, there was no systematic phonics instruction. :) Now he can and does read pretty much anything. His favorites are 5th/6th grade level fiction (like Eleanor Estes), and mid/upper elementary level science textbooks. He also enjoys writing on his "blog" (which is actually a Word document). He seems to have a pretty good feel for sentence construction, how to write a compelling story line, etc. but his punctuation and capitalization are pretty random. And...this kid can not spell! At all. He asks for my help with the simplest words. I can't relate to this because for me, reading and spelling went hand-in-hand. If I could read it, I could spell it. So I need to teach this child to spell. Will this involve phonics? I also want him to learn grammar. So, what sort of spelling/grammar/[phonics?] curriculum would you recommend for a young child who is already reading quite well?
  22. This should be my final question post for the night ;) I have Killgallon, MCT Paragraph Town, Practice Town, & Grammar Town & Everyday Editing. Would Image Grammar be a legitimate additional tool for my toolbox or would it be covering the same ground as the books I already have? Unfortunately, I'll have to buy it blind since my library doesn't have it. Secondly, how do you use Image Grammar with your children? Does it work well with just a child or two or is it fairly classroom oriented? Does it have assignments or is it more of a philosophy of LA & then you need to figure out how to implement the philosophy? Thanks for any help.
  23. ( This is a 9th grade homeschooler speaking. I pick out my own curriculum.) Grammar is definitely not my strong point, so I want something that will start with the basics and then go on into more advanced material. I would actually prefer it if the curriculum was rigorous or at least in depth. For a while I was looking at Analytical Grammar, but it's really expensive and I'm worried that it will be hard to stick to. :confused: Does anyone have any experience with AG? Is there another grammar course you would recommend?
