  1. I will have a 1st grader and Kindergartener next year. I purchased Shurley English 1 to begin with my 1st grader. Then I begin lookig at our "long term" plan, and to make my life a bit more "doable" with two younger children as well, I want to teach my older girls as much as I can together. *They are 1 grade level apart, but 22 months apart. Can this be done with Shurley English? Should I wait and do level 1 with both of them the following year when the youngest is first grade (and oldest is second)? Then I feel like I am not helping my oldest reach her abilities... Or do I give the kindergartener a go at it and see what happens? I don't want to overthink this, but I do want to make some choices so that my life will be a bit easier. Anyone done this before? Have suggestions?
  2. would you choose to teach it every year with something like A Beka, CLE, etc.? I saw AG last year at the expo and heard rave reviews, so I made up my mind we would use that when the time came and have just be piddling with Winston Basic this year. (My sons are in 4th and 6th, btw.) We did use R&S thru 3rd for each and also did most of FLL 3 last year as well. Imagine my HUGE surprise when I looked at samples of CLE LA for grades 5 & 7!! Holy smokes! There is no way! My rising 7th grader would be clueless! Now, I am rethinking AG. I am thinking of putting them in CLE at probably 4/5th and 6th for my oldest. We only hit grammar once a week now. We have been working on learning to write a coherent paragraph. Our days drag on forever now. I really don't want to do grammar EVERY DAY, but when I see the scope of what CLE covers, especially so early, I feel I am not providing the best education possible for them. You know, I don't even have a clue about a lot of the grammar I saw in the 6-7th levels of CLE LA. If I did learn it at one time, I surely don't remember it now! Just how important is it to know and when do you need to know it? Thanks! Kim
  3. We're on lesson 155 of FLL 2, where you go through "The Storm" and identify adverbs and adjectives. We need a little more practice in identifying and defining adverbs and adjectives - anyone know of a place I could find some extra worksheets or resources?
  4. Grammar ladies, Please help my son and I with a sentence in his grammar lesson today. The sentence reads: The children could hardly sleep, for they were excited. Our question deals with the last part of this compound sentence. We agree "were" is a verb, but what kind of verb-linking or helping? My answer key says "excited" is a verb, but my son feels it's a predicate adjective with "were" being a linking verb. I can't say for sure. I'm sure there is some rule we are forgetting. Please help.   5. I am currently planning for our 2nd year of homeschooling in the fall. My dd will be in 8th grade, and she always did well in public school (good grades). I'm trying to figure out what to do for her LA curriculum, and finding it quite overwhelming to choose between something that covers it all or a lot of separate programs. Time is an issue for me, as I also have a dd who will be 3 next fall. My dd 13 writes well, basically, but she doesn't really seem to know the terms used in grammar. Just today she asked me again what a pronoun is! Is "grammar" in and of itself a big deal if she can compose proper sentences? Would choosing a good writing program be sufficient, without worrying about how much grammar is included? I'm considering CQLA, which would include grammar, and supplementing w/literature studies.
  6. My two dd's (7th and 4th grader) are finishing their first year of formal grammar using Analytical Grammar (season 1 - junior AG for 4th grader). It was a pretty intense course for 1st year grammar and I am going to hold off using the rest of the program until 9th and 10th grade. I think my oldest needs more practice with the basics of grammar, especially diagramming and punctuation, before moving on in AG. I was thinking of filling in with Rod and Staff English but wasn't sure what level to put them in. Next year they will be in 5th and 8th grade. If not Rod and Staff can you recommend another program you like for grammar/punctuation. We are using IEW for writing. Thanks
  7. My son will officially be in 7th grade next year. He has been in some public school for K, 1 and half of 4th. I'm not sure that he got much in English lessons. We have been doing Charlotte Mason style up to this point. I am an English major and feel pretty confident as a teacher. I hate saying that. I just know everyone is correcting my writing skills. I would like to add grammar instruction to his 7th grade year. I understand the 7th grade level is pretty advanced. Any idea for a good placement? He is starting on Writing Strands and that is going well. If you suggest another option, that's great. But, we are on a really tight budget, so it would be nice if it's inexpensive.
  8. I have a 3rd grade son and we are using IEW and enjoying it. I cannot seem to hit a good groove with grammar. We're almost halfway through Shurley Grammar, but I cannot bear to go on with it. (We skipped the writing portions.) It just doesn't fit my style and I don't think my son can apply the the things he's learning outside the pages of his grammar book. I then went towards the opposite end of the spectrum and ordered LLATL. I'm not sure that I'm comfortable with the grammar-lite approach. What do YOU use with IEW? What makes your grammar program and IEW a good combination? Thanks!
  9. who has taught her children the difference between May I and Can I. I admit-this is a total pet peeve of mine. My two know that if they say Can I my answer will be "I don't know, can you?" or "You can, but that does not mean I will give permission" There was a friend over today and he asked if he could have something to drink and I automatically gave my response as I went to get the water. Total blank stare. No clue about the difference. This is not the first time I have gotten the blank stare. Pet peeve rant over. Thank you for listening.
  10. Is there an 'All in One' grammar / diagramming program similar to Spelling Power, that has everything you would ever need all in one book? Does such a program exist? One book you can use, in order, until all grammar and diagramming are mastered? Or maybe one book for grammar and one book for diagramming? If there isn't, is that because this is not a good idea for some reason? :glare: Thanks!
  11. Does anyone have suggestions for a grammar game? My oldest twin has been experiencing some retaining issues with a topic in English (mainly the different kinds of adjectives) and flash cards just won't do. He responds more to games so I have been trying to hunt down a good Grammar Game. My last resort will be to make one but buying it would be so much easier.:D Any suggestions?
  12. I have a first grader using Queens Language Lessons for the Very Young. It's fine for first, but I need something else for second or third grade. I'm considering the following: Abeka FLL Rod and Staff Easy Grammar (I know this is alot different than the other ones--but from what I hear this is the way I was taught grammar, so it's in the running. :001_smile:) What do you like and why? I have no problem skipping problems if the text has too many (Abeka, for example). I just really don't know which to pick! :tongue_smilie: Thanks- Amanda
  13. English Language ? In particular, Grammar. WTM recommends Rod and Staff but I find it very dry and it needs daily parental assistance - with my large family I find it difficult to get around to each child with R&S each day. Hoping to find something that is just as thorough, but not needing daily parental input.
  14. I'm in a bit of an English quandry right now and feel the need to beef thing up for my guys. We're not unhappy with our present English Grammar curricula, but I'm not sure it's getting the job done. I should note that we do copywork, narration, and dictation and I don't plan on changing that. My 11yo ds has only had one year (1st grade) and my 8yo ds has never done formal grammar. When I saw the books at a homeschool convention, they appeared overwhelming to me. Since then, I have read many posts and reviews and nearly all sing it's praises. I'm also aware that WTM and others highly recommend it. Would you please share what makes it so good for your family? Warmly,
  15. Is there a rigorous or just as thorough alternative to R&S English yet gentle? Does that exist? I'm doing a little investigating for one of my twins. (5th grade) Thanks.:001_smile:
  16. My dd has done 7 years of Abeka, and now Rod and Staff. She has the stuff down. At some point, can we just stop grammar?
  17. I am teaching Lively Latin at a co-op, and this week (we are delayed due to Ike) I taught concrete vs abstract nouns. The noun "journey" is listed as concrete in the answer key. Do you agree or disagree? Why? I think I understand, but it is iffy, and I could argue the other way as well. I had a few parents ask me for an explanation, and I couldn't give a convincing one, mainly because I am not convinced one way or the other myself.
  18. does this drive you nuts? i know HSing moms who do not know the difference between there/their/they're, your/you're, who's/whose, etc. hat about those who misspell common words like congratulations (i'm thinking of a gal who spells it CONGRADULATIONS), organizer (ORGANIZOR), refrigerator (REGRIDGERATOR), etc. what about those who use the word ain't? i must confess that these all drive me crazy! please tell me i'm not alone...:001_huh:
  19. This summer I decided to begin using the Shurley Grammar series. It is going well, but it has made me wonder: Why is it so important for us to know how to label and/or diagram sentences? Is this truly of value? I learned it in high school and college, but never use these skills. I am not familiar with the Charlotte Mason or Beechick approach, but I'm beginning to wonder if teaching grammar more naturally through reading and writing is a better approach. Will I be short changing my children if they learned all about grammar and could write well, but didn't really know how to diagram a sentence? I know that many people use "more relaxed" programs such as Sonlight LA or LLATL. I know they don't follow a classical method, but . . . There is a big part of me that is concerned that I'm going to burn out my ds if we spend 5 years (3rd grade - 7th grade) labeling sentences. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  20. We are in Unit 4 and I am really starting wonder if I made the right decision here. At first everything seemed to make sense such as the pronouns function as adjectives and we don't just label them pronouns b/c they're in our "mind" list. However, I am feeling like now we are not getting the "teaching" part that we got in R&S. We levels 2, 3 and 4 of R&S. Often I am stumped with labeling a word and find myself getting lost since I am not participating in the book like I did as the teacher in R&S. DD said just the morning that she is guessing at some of the words too. So, do I take a chill pill and proceed or re-evaluate my decision:confused: I also chose Flashkids Language Arts for my 2nd and 3rd grader and my 2nd grader is SO LOST. I am about ready to trash those little workbooks as I feel like they are a waste. I suppose I should have stuck with R&S since it was "working" for the oldest. I also reckon I should have done the boys in R&S 2 together. Any admonishments or encouragements for me?? I am planning to start IEW-SWI B with my 6th grader in a few weeks after AG Season 1 was over. I was going to try and include the boys in the KWO "some". This seems to be a double post since I have multiple questions and for that I am sorry!!!!! Thanks for reading, Barb
  21. Given I hear R&S 9 and 10 focus on writing, what do you suggest for grammar reinforcement beyond R&S 8? My boys will be finished studying Latin and Greek but will be studying their modern languages (French and Spanish). Thanks! Lisa
  22. Good morning! We are just starting the part of FLL where DD needs to memorize a list of prepositions (46 if I counted correctly). I wonder if anyone has used a song of some sort to teach the list? I think that would be very helpful to my DD (and me)! I did a quick Google search and see many options but not sure what others may have used. FWIW my DDs have the Audio Memory Geography songs and LOVE it (Mama doesn't, LOL). Perhaps their Grammar CD is just as good?
  23. We are using Rod and Staff (grammar parts only) for both my 6th grader and 4th grader, and using something else for composition. I'm wondering how often do you cover grammar each week, (if you do,) and how long each day? I'm trying to decide if we should cover grammar for X number of weeks, then composition, or try to do both at once. Or, split up the weeks to cover grammar on certain days, and composition on others. Thanks!
