Help me decide on 4th grade Latin...Latina Christiana?

I'm looking at starting my 4th grader in Latin next semester. I was looking at buying Latina Christiana for him (It's in my RR cart...) But then I realized I already own 2 (no make that 4!) Latin programs. Geesh! I should just delete this and run away before you guys throw tomatoes at me. :leaving: Now that I think about it, I've got Getting Started with Latin, Minimus, First Form Latin 1, and Lively Latin 1. I started to use FFL with him (since I was already using it with dd13), but quickly realized it's too much for him right now--we didn't even get through the introductory lesson before I shelved it. Minimus is fun and all, but it doesn't really teach. I loved the explicit, grammar approach of FFL, which is why I'm considering LC1. Lively Latin annoys me for the same reason. I took my oldest through it in 3rd/4th/5th grade, but I felt like we chanted a lot of stuff and learned some vocab without really learning any of the "why's". It wasn't until we started another Latin program that I discovered what a noun declension is. And she'd been chanting declension endings for almost 3 years! Maybe I could use it with him. It felt like busy work and a waste of time... but he'd probably enjoy it anyway and it's independent... GSWL is still a possibility. I tried it with my older ds when he was in 2nd or 3rd grade, and it was too hard for him after 20-30 lessons, but this ds has more grammar experience and is better with language. Sooo... any opinions on Latina Christiana? Does it do a good job teaching the grammar of Latin? Is it engaging? Is the amount of writing appropriate for a 9yo? Should I just forget it and print out a chapter of LL for him to try? I'd really like to get him into the MP First Form/Second Form series when he's older, and I'm wondering if LC will help us reach that goal without killing his love of learning Latin. -
We are considering enrolling our son in Memoria Press' online First Form Latin class for next year. Does anyone have any recommendations for teachers, or feedback/suggestions to us in choosing a section and instructor? This is really important to us, as it will be our son's first online class. He also does best with written material, and has a little more difficulty with information presented orally. So we are looking for a teacher who is not a quick/loud talker or encourages a classroom with a great deal of commotion. The sections we are looking at primarily list Paul Cable and Catherine Tinnis, but any feedback on instructors' styles and the First Form online class in general (at Memoria) would be very much appreciated! -
I planned on using Latina Christian I because we've enjoyed our past year with Prima Latina. But I was just looking at their schedule and it looks like I may need to transition to First Form. However, I'm confused because my boys are split. It lists: Latina Christian I : grades 3-6 - just right for my youngest (4th) but too young for my oldest (7th). First Form, it suggests grades 5-12, possibly too advanced for my youngest?? My hunch is to go with LC which will not be very challenging for my oldest. Has anyone used LC I with a 13yo? Or maybe to go with FF but simplify it for my younger son. Has anyone used First Form with a 9yo? Backstory: We used Prima Latina 2 years ago when they were ages 7 & 10. They liked it at first but grew to dread it. The large vocab list plus chants was too much to fit in each week. Plus they thought it was really dry. The LC has been more fun, I think, bc they are familiar with all the prayers. I do still have the Prima Latina books, though, and could probably go back and pick them up where we stopped - around lesson 11, I think. I guess my main concern is not turning off my oldest to Latin too much (with Prima Latina) but also not expecting too little of him (with Latina Christiana I.) Is LC I sufficient or too little? And since I'm re-thinking Latin, I may as well look at the Big Book of Lively Latin which I've not yet considered. Another thought just occurred to me. Since we already own the Prima Latina books, I guess we could slow it down to LC pace: half the vocab words and 2 weeks to cover a chant. However, the prayers really are fun. We go to a very small, but very old-school Anglican church, and they enjoy knowing the prayers in Latin or at least being able to transcribe them in my ear. Plus I like the accompanying Copybooks. Perhaps my goals for Latin should be re-considered. My goal is not really that they become fluent in Latin but that 1) taking the SAT/ACT test will be easier with a solid Latin background (I once taught SAT tests to juniors and seniors) and 2) learning a second language will come easier with the Latin building blocks. So... I guess that means I'm looking for a Latin program that will be useful as building blocks to vocabulary/testing and for language acquisition. Oh and for context: My 12yo is also going through "Hey Andrew, Teach Me Some Greek" and my youngest is reading simple books to me in Spanish and already has a bit of conversational Spanish down, since we lived in Mexico for a while. I liked the grammar reinforcement they got in Prima Latina. Whew, didn't mean to write so much. I wonder how much we figure out on our own by just asking the question. I seemed to have narrowed it down somewhat. But still, I'd love to hear from anyone else about your experience with these programs and/or with similar situations. Thanks! -
I've read most of the threads tagged First Form. Many of them were dated 2010 & 2011. (I checked sigs and didn't see many people continuing with the 'Form series. What happened, people?) I'm looking at ordering First Form for eldest dd next year. She's completed Prima Latina & Latina Christiana I. She's doing the LC I games book this year to keep from getting rusty. Should I get the DVDs? (This dd doesn't do well yet working on her own & she didn't like tthe PL or LC DVDs.) Should I get the grammar charts? Should I get the flashcards or have her make them? (We made them for Prima. We had them for LC. She's making Spanish flashcards this year & it seems to be more of a time waster than a help.) Other comments?

We are doing Latina Christian 1 this year, and it looks like we can either go into number 2 or to First form latin. Has anyone used these? Nicole

Dd has done Lively Latin. She really liked it & retained the vocabulary very well, but the grammar didn't stick. I am trying to decide what, if anything, to do for Latin this coming year. We could just do some vocab memorization & chanting endings, etc. I don't have a problem with this except that I'm not sure it will actually get done. I do already have Minimus & Latin Book One so I could add in reading practice to give dd a fuller experience. We could do either LFC or First Form Latin, but I can't decide which one looks better. I don't like that FF has only ecclesiastical pronunciation, but I don't know that it really matters much. I also can't figure out what is on the cd. Does it have chants or just vocab? With FF I'd probably add in a chapter of Famous Men of Rome each week since FF doesn't cover history. If we did LFC I'd have ds listen to the cd & memorize the chants on it before beginning the workbook his 4th grade year. However, my impression is that the foundation built in LFC is not quite as solid as that built in FF. At this point, I can't decide if it would be productive to do Latin right now or if it would be better to just wait & start Wheelock in about 7th grade & move as whatever pace works for my child. Any opinions?

How do you schedule it? Do you stick to the TM, or do your own thing? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed when I look at it. I can't quite seem to wrap my mind around all the different parts. Help! (BTW, I did not get the DVDs, but I do have the audio CD.)

Now that I've used a variety of Latin resources (Memoria Press, Minimus, Galore Park) during a variety of grades, I'm fairly settled on incorporating the subject, using First Form Latin, around the middle school years. My second son, a rising 7th grader, previously used Latina Christiana 1 and part of Latin Prep from Galore Park. He didn't study Latin this year but I wouldn't mind exposing him to the subject a bit more via First Form. My third son, a rising 5th grader, is using LC 1 this year. I plan to have to him move on to First Form this fall or next. For those familiar with First Form, do you think these two guys could work through First Form at the same pace? Does it seem like a 5th grader who completed LC 1 would finish First Form in a standard school year? Did you purchase First Form directly from Memoria Press, or...? I know I'll need two copies of the student workbook; will each boy also need his own student textbook? Thanks for your help!:)

We are considering joining a group that uses this program. I have never seen it before (expect for the sample page) and am wondering if any of you have used/seen it and what you think. How does it compare to Prima Latina and LC1 + LC2? My dd12 has done PL and about half of the first Ecce Romani Book. She also passed the NLE Introductory Exam with no problem. How would this compare to FFL? Anything else I should know? Thanks!

A plug for Memoria Press and their new Latin coming out this summer/fall First Form. My son (9) is in the beta group. We have gone into this from LCI and I am so pleased with it. There is a student text and separate student workbook. The workbook contains about 10-15 exercises for each lesson. There is a heavy emphasis on the grammar and less on the vocabulary, though ds is having no problems retaining the vocab. We are completing one lesson a week. and will be working on it over the summer. Due to the amount of writing, I would say that it could only be used with grade 4 and up and only then if they are reading/writing VERY well, though they do suggest completing some of the workbook oraly if it is too much writing. I am so pleased with this and can't wait for second form to come out. *I* finally understand the principal parts, and so does ds. :001_smile:

I just got my Memoria Press catalogue and I see that First Form Latin will be out in August. I am teaching a LCI class and I assumed I'd be going on to LCII and then First Form Latin. I was surprised that First Form Latin says to use it after LCI. I'm unsure about what to do. Does anyone know what follows First Form Latin--will we still go on to Henle? Does anyone have any more details? Larissa homeschooling 5 in NJ

Does First Form replace Henle or Latina Christiana or does it fall somewhere between those two? Highlands Latin School does First Form 1,2 and 3 in grades 4-6 and then goes to Henle in 7th. I was thinking about trying First Form for dd next fall in 7th but would this be backtracking? We are only in Unit 1 of Henle (but I hope to finish it by summer) and are moving slowly right now. We did not do Latina Christian 1 or 2 (we did use Prima Latina and Our Roman Roots). I was planning on our picking up the pace in 7th. I had considered adding Cambridge but also like the new program Latin for the New Millennium. I also wanted to hear more about First Form. Thanks everyone:001_smile:
