  2. I'm posting this request here because of the title of her book: Pre-Algebra: An "Accelerated" Course 😀
  3. After my DH and I decided to go with the older Dolciani math textbooks, I started my search for the books on-line. My 1st purchase was made on April 21, 2008, and I received my last book of the series yesterday, June 23, 2008. Here's what I ended up with: Modern Algebra Structure & Method Book 1 Teacher's Edition and Student Text with answers (1965) Modern Geometry Structure & Method Teacher's Edition and Student Text (1965) Modern School Mathematics Algebra 2 & Trigonometry Teacher's Edition and Student Text with answers (1971) Modern Introductory Analysis Tea
  4. For all Dolciani math text users who have or need solutions...I'm wondering how we can work together in a legal way to amass the solutions from OOP books.... Eg. I have the Modern Algebra and Trig Structure and Method Book Two c1963, 1965 solution book. It was partially cut apart by a previous owner so it is really falling apart. Earlier I posted about Google books but no one answered. I don't really have the time to pursue it with them because you have to show traffic for the book and other stuff which I have no idea how to do. Nor would I want to part with my book for an unknown pe
  5. Mary P. Dolciani co-authored several books in the Houghton Mifflin Modern Mathematics Series, starting in the 1960s, and the books were used widely. I think a sequence that could be used from grades 7 on are Pre-Algebra: An Accelerated Course (1996) by Mary P. Dolciani Modern Algebra Structure and Method (Book 1), revised ed. (1973), by Mary P. Dolciani and William Wooton Modern Algebra and Trigonometry: Structure and Method (Book 2) (1963) by Mary P. Dolciani, Simon L. Berman, and William Wooton Modern Geometry: Structure and Method (1965) by Ray C. Jurgensen, Alfred J.
  6. Silly me. I thought that the trig portion of the Dolciani Algebra II/Trig text that my son is currently using would be the same as the Dolciani Modern Trigonometry text that I picked up at a library book sale last spring. (My new hobby is collecting old Dolciani texts on the cheap.) Imagine when I pulled the latter off the shelf and saw the name Bechenbach on the cover. Understand that the Dolciani/Bechenbach collaboration on Modern Introductory Analysis created a stellar high school math text that I used in the mid '70's. So my curiosity was piqued. This 1966 text begins where every o
  7. Not sure if much has changed since I was in school, so here it goes. If you do Pre-Algebra in 7th, is it Algebra (8th), geometry (9th), Int. Algebra (10th) Trig. (11th) and Pre Calc. (12)? That is, if you plan on going that far. I have been flipping through Lial's BCM 7th E, and it looks like this will really work for ds 1. So what sequence would follow if he likes Lial's, which think he will. Also, I think ds2 will need a different direction. He is a natural at Math, and once he gets it, he doesn't tend to forget. Someone mentioned Dolciani, which I have yet to familiarize myse
  8. Will the Dolciani algebra I 1967 TE work with the algebra I student book 1962? What do I need to know about this? I have been hunting high and low for a 1962/65 TE, but to no avail. I've located a 1967, but am not sure how they coordinate....I do need a TE, because I am not confident in doing this without a TE.
  9. What is the difference between the 60's versions and the 70's versions? I read that anything under '75 is rigorous, but one post saying a child preferred the '65 to the '75 (sorry, can't remember who). Thanks. :D
  10. After spending much time searching through the many forums I have finally narrowed down my search of Algebra 2/Geometry books. Algebra 2 Foerster Algebra and Trigonometry Dolciani Algebra and Trigonometry Structure & Method Book 2 Lial Intermediate Algebra Geometry Jacobs? Jurgensen I am looking for a very rigorous course with thorough explanations. I have seen many comparisons on the Forester/Dolciani/Lial/Jacobs book's in past posts and I was wondering which has the most rigorous approach and also a somewhat self teaching method. Also in reference to the Dolciani
  11. My upcoming 6th grader just finished MUS Zeta and I am looking for a fairly rigorous Prealgebra book for him to use next year. Does Dolciani Prealgebra: An Accelerated Course fit the bill? If so, what edition do I need to look for? Do I need the TM and the solution key as well? How does Dolciani compare to Lial's BCM? So many options ... so confused!

  13. Now that ds is in his second ch of the trig section (in the Alg II/Trig Dolciani '65 book), we've hit a major slowdown.... It can take an hour to do 2 problems...Ds says they just take him a long time... Here I was thinking he would be finished with the book by the middle of April. Any insights? Thanks! Joan
  14. Pros and Cons please. Heather (who is on a math hunt)
  15. I have one TE so far, and I haven't looked closely at it yet. But I am wondering how you 1960s Dolciani fans use your books with your child. I am coming from the background of using R&S math, which tells the teacher everything to do, and then the teacher can adjust it to the child. I like that. I see that the TE does have a 170 day plan, and different levels of plans. Do you use these? How? Do you do it for 170 days, or do you ever combine to make it take less days? How? I will be looking ahead at my books before my kids get around to algebra 1, so I know that self-study a
  16. For those of you who own the solution keys to the Dolciani texts, how often do you refer to them? Frequently, sometimes, or never? Are the teacher text books with the answers enough? I have had success in obtaining two levels of the Dolciani solution keys, but am having a beast of a time finding the other two levels. The ones that I do have are in pristine condition and appear brand new (as new as a 1965 book can be.) This lends me to think that teachers never needed the solution key. If I were Jane in NC, I would have a blast solving the problems on my own and double checking the s
  17. Hi! I'm new to posting here. I've been reading for awhile and have learned so much from all of you. Thanks! Now I need help. My questions are: 1. What is the "Introduction to Inequalities" book by Beckenbach and Bellman? Where in the math series do you use it? 2. I bought a book called, "Modern School Mathematics Algebra I," with Dolciani, Beckenbach, Jurgensen & Wooten (1967) and the corresponding Teacher's Edition. Did I make a mistake? This is not the "Structure and Methods" book that everyone discusses but is it just as good? I'm not a math whiz and definately
  18. I searched Dolciani and you can see (and be overwhelmed) by 10-11 pages of all her different books but there isn't much detail for each book. Here is the info .. Beware, even though there are links to Amazon, etc, they are not always the same book. Eg, I clicked on one for Algebra and Trig and the book that came up was only Algebra. I've been wondering if anyone has contacted Google Books about putting the solution books for old Dolcianis online? Some of these book dealers are putting up astronomical fees yet this is an educational item and those solution books are what teaching moms/d
  19. I have a possible TE of Modern Introductory Analysis on my radar - here is what the seller says: "The book is indeed a teacher's edition. The copyright is 1964, but also on the page it states "teacher's manual and annotations-1970." What does the bolded part mean - why does it say 1970? Would it still have 1964 material in it? I have been trying to buy within 1960-1965.
  20. I have read through all the posts I could find about the Dolciani books. I have a few questions about which level these books are: Modern School Mathematics: Structure and Method Course 1 Modern School Mathematics: Structure and Method Course 2 I have found the solutions manual for the 1972 edition, so I decided to go with this. What about the pre-algebra? I have found several of these, but are they what used to be the Math 7 and 8 from the early 70's? What is considered Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, etc?? Is there a sequence listed for these books? I have spent so muc
  21. For a student who will have completed Singapore M through 6B, LOF Fractions and Decimals & Percents, and EPGY through 6th. She will be doing EPGY Honor's Pre-Algebra, but needs a textbook pre-algebra for a different approach. I have looked at a few pre-algebra texts that seemed to be all review, and no new material. I'm not looking to go into full algebra, but don't want to repeat a year of material with nothing new. Is there a pre-algebra program that stretches some, without going into full Algebra? TIA
  22. Sorry if this was covered before, but my searches didn't come up with threads that answered this question ... I am confused ... looking at the Dolciani algebra books ... So I have a copy of Book 1 Modern Algebra Structure and Method, 1973. Looking for the next in sequence at Amazon, I'm finding titles such as: Algebra and Trigonometry Structure and Method Algebra II and Trigonometry Modern Algebra and Tigonometry Structure and Method Book 2 Algebra and Trigonometry Book 2 Modern School Mathematics Structure and Method Book 2 So many titles, so little time & money! W
  23. I wonder this all the time: How do people find out about alternate resources without spending a fortune acquiring them and spending all of your time reviewing curricula? I am so intrigued by what people have said regarding these books, but I want to know more. What makes these Dolciani books so great? And, which ones would you use? There are 19 books listed with her as the author. We are going to finish up to 6B in Singapore Math within a year and a half with my mathy son, and we will likely continue with NEM, however, I am checking into alternate resources as well. Fill me in, plea
