  1. I just purchased Homer and need some help. 1. What do you think of "Harvey's Elementary Grammar"? Can I easily use GWG grade 5 instead? If I do need Harvey's, which edition? There seems to be a revised one out, also. 2. Mary Daly's Book of Whole Diagrams isn't available. What else could I use? 3. Can you recommend a good thesaurus? Thanks Hot Lava Mama
  2. OK, I received my CW Older Beginners set yesterday afternoon. I sat up with it last night until 12:00 am and then my brain finally shut down from overload. I honestly don't know if I am capable of teaching this. :confused: Seriously. :blink: Part of me is asking...does writing need to be this difficult? This time consuming? This over-the-top? My older boys never did anything even remotely like this and they are functioning adults, holding down jobs in society, and attending college. Does one really need to write this way? My initial reaction is to pack it up and send it back (can one send something back to Lulu??) and buy Meaningful Composition, or IEW. Those are both at my ability level. CW is way above my very uneducated pin head. I don't even understand some of it. :confused: And yet... It looks good. It does. I don't know why they have you do some of the things you do, but I am sure it's for a good purpose. Even if I had my son do other writing and only complete CW days 2-4 he would learn gobs. *I* would learn gobs. Oh, and speaking of the actual writing...don't they walk you through it somehow? I feel like they just say "write" and your child is supposed to know how to go about that. :001_huh: Am I missing something? WT2 is sooooo much easier to implement than CW. My son LOVES WT2 and actually enjoys the rewrites. I honestly don't think my son is going to love CW. :tongue_smilie: The writing projects are going to be drudgery for him, I think. Most of them are even boring to read, let alone rewrite. What to do, what to do. I am tempted to order a level of Meaningful Composition and put the progym off until the high school years as suggested in WTM. I honestly do not know if I am smart enough. And yet, what if I am? Do I really want to take the time to find out? {sigh}
  3. Could anyone explain what we'd miss if we used the OB? My daughter will be 12 in the fall. For the next school year, I'm thinking of doing Poetry for Beginners A, then Homer OB. Then Poetry B and Diogenes Maxim the year after. She completed Aesop A (at 9 yrs), Aesop B (at 10 yrs), and IEW SWI B this year. She likes to write, and has done GWG 3, 4, 5. Also, if you don't use Harvey's, does it seem like you skip a lot of the program? Thanks for any thoughts!
  4. I can understand Homer!! I just got Aseop and spent the evening pouring through it and am actually understanding it. I LOVE, LOVE it! My fear is Homer from what I have been hearing on the message boards. Please tell me that if I can understand and "get" Aseop that Homer is set up in the same way to understand it. KWIM??? I know it is harder, but are the instructions detailed enough like they are in Aseop to "get" it?? I know I shouldn't be worried about Homer now, but I am a visionary and next year scares me! :crying:
  5. Why, oh, why does it have to be so complicated? I just don't want to deal with another complicated program. I know the student book and TM helps and spells it out but I just don't know if I can deal with this :banghead: :banghead: I spent a whole summer figuring out SWR, I spent three wks figuring out how to streamline Shurley, don't get me started on RS math-WHY can they not just simplify these programs? It seems like all the really good ones, that really teach in a meaty way that gets them thinking, are all impossibly complicated. I really like things streamlined, and I always have to end up doing it myself with these programs. Homer is a great program-I want the skills it imparts-I just don't feel like sitting down for two months and tearing Homer apart and reconstructing it so it is coherent and streamlined. Isn't there ANYthing else that will get Homer skills in without such a big fuss? Grrr.... :rant:
  6. How do you implement Homer? I've got it in front of me, and I got all the components (core, IG, and student worktext). I like what I'm seeing overall, but I'm trying to figure out what we'll do what days, what is skippable, etc. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  7. I'm trying to decide between IEW and CW for my fourth grader. And I'd like to hear from anyone who has gotten far into the CW program to see the results of it. Do you think it was the right decision? Do you think it would have been beneficial to also do some IEW writing based on history studies? I've been struggling with this decision for months. I'm leaning toward CW, only because she is stronger in language arts and just don't see her with heavy science or math in her future, for which IEW is good (as I understand it). However, she is not a strong student. Schoolwork for her can be a struggle...she simply doesn't like it! She memorizes incredibly well if she hears something, and I think she is a fairly good creative writer. I'd appreciate any help!
