  1. Looking for Chemistry for 15 & 16 year old boys. Neither one is planning on college, but not totally ruling it out. I am specifically looking at Spectrum Chemistry right now. I’d like something self guiding with labs. Not heavy in math. Video would be nice, but not required. (I know SC does not have video lessons) pam
  2. I have the Apologia Chemistry 2nd edition textbook. I want to use Apologia's Student Notebook, but it is only available in 3rd edition. Will my textbook match the student notebook questions and experiments? Thank you!
  3. hi, I'm new here. have homeschooled for seven years but returning to do high school. Daunted by chemistry and lab science. Can anyone speak to the value (perceived, actual, college admissions--already admitted vs currently applying, etc.) of WTM chemistry and lab for college credit--or if anyone has been given a hard time in admissions? thank you.
  4. First post. My mind is very cluttered right now, just want to know whatever everyone thinks about the universe in terms of our planet. Do you think we play a huge role? What about other life somewhere else?

  6. Just a heads up for anyone who was waiting, Clover Valley Chemistry opened up March 1st for Registration. We are looking forward to this class next year, we've heard such great things:)
  7. Ds is probably not going to finish Discovering Design with Chemistry by Dr. Wile in one school year. It may take him a couple of months into the following school year. (I could have him finish it over the summer, but I'm trying to be realistic here. We typically don't get much done during the summer.) I'd like for him to be able to sit for the CLEP or AP Chem test after next year. Is there anything (preferably secular or not overly religious- Wile was fine) he could complete in a matter of 6-8 months which would prepare him for this? I'm considering Thinkwell AP Chem, but it has no lab component. He will need proof of labs for the colleges he's considering (STEM major.) It needs to be under $300 total.
  8. I just noticed that Khan Academy now has a subject called "AP Chemistry". Since we are about to start that course again with the twins, I am wondering if it is helpful in the following ways: As part of the course? As drill for the AP Chemistry exam? In other ways? TIA for any and all feedback on this tool!
  9. Does anyone have any experience with this class or this instructor? https://debrabell.com/product/introduction-chemistry-physics/ We have had excellent experiences with their French classes, but that was because the teacher was super. Anyone taken this before? Thanks!
  10. Hi. I'm Kris Langman, author of the Logic to the Rescue series. I'm currently writing the fourth book in the series and I'm taking suggestions for topics to cover, both in this book and in the rest of the books in the series. (I'm planning six to seven books in total). For example, a reader asked me to include some info about the Linnean system of classification, so I added info about this to the the third book, The Bard of Biology. Suggestions can be about logic, math, physics, chemistry, and biology. I'll try to include as many suggestions as possible as long as they work with the story and plot. Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Kris Langman
  11. So... ds is enjoying the lectures & doing ok but even taking notes & printing out a copy of the lecture notes he does not have enough info on some subjects. It seems some of the lectures are either moving very quickly or anticipating a higher level of background info than he has. I think he'd benefit from a good text that he could use to read along with the lecture topics. Anyone have a favourite? If there's something that people love as a good primer at this level - does not have to be full curriculum because it would be just to supplement the lectures - , pls chime in & tell me what to buy :) thx!
  12. Hoping for feedback regarding the Veritas Press: Scholars Academy High School online programs. Thank you for sharing your experiences & help.
  13. Hi Everyone, It looks like we slightly re-thinking our plans for Chemistry this year. Has anyone used (or have any feedback) the this kit? http://www.thamesandkosmos.com/index.php/product/category/science-kits/chem-c3000 We really appreciate any feedback on it. Thanks,
  14. I've finally decided on using Zumdahl Chemistry for next year. Yay! Making the decision is half the battle :) It is between Introductory Chemistry and World of Chemistry. It really depends on where I can get both the textbook as well as a solutions manual. So far, the only places I've seen them is on Amazon, and other versions on EBay. If you've purchased Zumdahl Chemistry, whatever version you used (much to my dismay, there are several !!), could you share where you purchased? Just want to make sure I check out the different sources first. Thanks!
  15. This is the textbook used by WTMA chemistry, and it gets mixed reviews on Amazon. What are your impressions of this text?
  16. Has anyone tried the new Galore Park Science for Common Entrance: Chemistry book? My DS loves chemistry, and this looks both clear and colorful, as well as completely up to date, since it was just published in 2015. Any thoughts? How easy it it to implement? I see there's an answers book, is that what I can use to teach from? I don't want to put random parts of programs together, want it completely secular, and want an at least middle school level of chemistry instruction. I haven't used Galore Park before, but we've already gone through several elementary-level chemistry programs (he doesn't quite have all the maths yet for full-blown high school chemistry texts). Hence our desire for a middle school level chemistry program that's relatively easy to implement, straightforward science, and hopefully interesting. http://www.galorepark.co.uk/Product/9781471847103.aspx Anyone tried it yet? Or even seen it?
  17. Dd is interested in participating. I have no idea where to begin. Has anyone participated and can get me started? Dd is taking AP chemistry right now. Where can I get her signed up? Do I need to organize a competition? What kind prep does she need to do? Thanks!
  18. So I'm trying to come up with an introductory chemistry and physics program for my 6th grade son. My idea is for it to be a good hands-on year but with enough information to pull him into the topic, with either living books or videos or something. I thought about doing one semester each, but that's not set in stone. I also thought about doing the year in trimesters and doing chemistry for the first one, physics for the second and a unit on using the microscope for the third. I may just be trying to pack too much stuff in, though. For Chemistry, I thought about using The Elements by Ellen McHenry for the beginning. But don't know how I'd schedule it. Would I go slow? would I go ahead and use Carbon Chemistry as well? Or would it be more beneficial to use another text to go with it? What are some awesome books that we shouldn't miss to add to it? I've looked at Guest Hollow's schedule and a few others, but don't have a library around (we live overseas) so it's hard to come up with lots of extra books. For Physics, I like the look of Exploration Education, but that takes a 36 weeks to complete. I wasn't really planning on doing a whole year of one topic. But that's the idea, to do science and not just read about it. But since I'm not sciencey it has to be easy on the teacher. Again, what books would give that to him or do you have any other suggestions? So, any one who has a heart to help a fellow mum, and has been in my shoes or is really good in science, please share with me your wisdom! Thank you!
  19. It is my understanding that Landry uses Spectrum Chemistry for their high school chemistry class. I thought they used to use the Spectrum lab components & ship them as part of the cost of the class -- thus making taking Spectrum through them much cheaper (if you have cheap generic credits) than buying the lab stuff from Beginnings Publishing directly. Does anyone have a kid who is taking Landry's Chemistry class this year or last year who can confirm this? I heard a rumor that they've changed the lab component recently. Anyone?
  20. I am looking at Fascinating Chemistry as a possible component of my child's ninth grade chemistry education. I would love to hear from someone who has used it. Was it worthwhile? Was it enough? I am likely pairing it with Life of Fred Chemistry and/or The Great Courses Chemistry. And we may do a separate lab program.
  21. The Well-Trained Mind (2004 edition) recommends the Smithsonian Microchem XM 5000 Chemistry set for 7th grade chemistry. Does anyone have experience with this or with other packaged chemistry sets? They are not cheap, so I'd like to have some more feedback before I purchase one. I'm also curious if the later edition of The Well-Trained Mind recommends anything different. Thanks so much! Laurel Stevens mom to Elisabeth (11 yrs) and Henry (8 yrs)
  22. This is a fairly new title, but has anyone used or seen feedback on it? I'm looking at it for next year. 3rd and 4th graders. Any feedback or links to other threads appreciated!!!
  23. I'm thinking of teaching a science course for 3rd and 4th graders at our co-op. Does anyone have experience with Apologia's Young Explorers Chemistry/Physics? Would that be a good fit for this group? Obviously, we could not finish the book in one semester (10 classes, 45 min) but possibly we could continue the 2nd semester. I'm thinking that we would follow the book but do a brief lesson at beginning (10-15 min) and then the remainder would be hands-on activities/experiments. We did do a chemistry (REal Science 4 Kids) pre-level last year, and liked that. But I was thinking this curriculum would expand on that. The other thing I want to ask -- are the materials for the experiments fairly easy to put hands on? We have some basic equipment (graduated cylinders) here. Also I have two classroom kits, one for states of matter and one for polymers which we could use. Would those fit in? Any thoughts and suggestions would be very welcome!
  24. I'm planning chemistry for 2 next year. (1 wants to be a nurse and 1 wants to be an engineer) This year they used Kolbe Biology. They learned alot, but I think it was on the boring side for them. I started with living books with their biology and then realized it was too much and completed the rest of the year with just Kolbe I want to use living books with their chemistry next year. (Napoleon's Buttons, Disappearing Spoon and a biography) I do not want to overload them (that seems to be my nature) Does anyone have recommendations? I already have the MicroChem Kit (practically new) I need something that is somewhat laid out with quizzes and or tests. I have looked at (but not sold on any) Spectrum Chemistry Apologia Chemistry Conceptual Chemistry Real Science 4 Kids Chemistry (but only counts as 1/2 credit) I know there is a big Chemistry tab on the main page. But, I thought someone might be able to give insight to a good curriculum that can go with living books and not be over the top on workload.

We’re finalizing a system that will allow families to make automated monthly payments on tuition, rather than having to pay the full amount up front.
