  1. Here are 3 resources that I'm using in my study of the Bible: Yale Open Course OT: http://oyc.yale.edu/religious-studies/rlst-145#sessions Yale Open Course NT: http://oyc.yale.edu/religious-studies/rlst-152#sessions I highly recommend this book: The BIble: A Historical and Literary Intro Look in it here: http://www.coursesmart.com/the-bible-a-historical-and-literary-introduction/ehrman-bart-d/dp/9780199336333 Hope you find this helpful!
  2. I'm having a difficult time lately studying my Bible. I have tried lots of different methods but nothing sticks for very long. I want to have a consistent study and prayer time in the morning. I would love to see how others do this. Do you use a study guide like Beth Moore? Do you keep a prayer journal? Do you read a One Year Bible? I would love to hear anyone's suggestions! Thanks! Elise in NC
  3. My recent thread on tithing has made something that I was trying to suppress come into full light. I admire so much those of you who are confident in where you are with your faith and can speak so intelligently about your religion. It has made it painfully obvious to me how empty I feel knowing that I don't have what you have. I struggle though in how to learn about God and grow in my faith if I can't handle religion? Maybe it's just that I haven't found the right religion? And by religion I guess I mean more denomination since I firmly believe in Christianity. I've never attended church regularly but those times that I have I always left with a bad taste in my mouth either due to what a specific denomination believed or because the people of the church were such a huge disappointment to me. I haven't tried them all but because of my experiences from my youth and from talking to those of certain denominations I just have gotten this wrong opinion that none of them are going to fit with what I'm looking for. I've been okay with having no religion for a long time but lately I'm feeling removed from God and have questions no one seems to be able to answer. In fact sometimes when I've brought up questions or doubts that I have I feel like I'm looked upon as not being a true Christian. Maybe I'm not though because right now I don't feel saved. Does that make sense? I believe in God and in Jesus but I don't feel them walking with me. I feel something is missing....lost. I think I used to feel their presence, especially at one point in my life where I was praying hard and often because of a crises. I remember feeling completely enveloped in God's arms one night when I was at my most desperate and remember all at once feeling completely at peace and knew everything was going to work out alright. I miss that feeling...somehow I've lost it and I feel empty not having it. I believe in God as a supreme being and that he created everything. I tend toward an old earth but I don't disbelieve that a young earth is possible. I tend to believe in creation but I don't disbelieve that God could have put evolution in motion. Neither has any bearing on my belief in God or in my belief that Jesus is the Son of God and that he died on the cross to atone for my sins. I believe God has granted me salvation and that I have only to accept it, however, I'm not sure how to go about doing that. I'm not sure how I feel about the Bible at this point as far as whether it is the literal word of God. I'm not opposed to that idea, but it was written down by man who was given free will. ((Not looking to debate that here...just putting my beliefs at this time out there.) One thing about this is that I'm not well educated in the Bible so people quoting scripture to me doesn't help. I'm not a stupid person but passages taken out of context don't make sense to me. I just got a study Bible from my dad and am going to start reading through it after Christmas so hopefully some of my questions regarding it will become answered.) Dh has a very strong faith and says that he feels God walk beside him daily. He talks to God throughout the day and says that he feels\hears Him. He doesn't feel church is necessary to his faith or his understanding. He identifies himself as Catholic and said that growing up he had many priests tell him things that really solidified his faith and what he believed. (I know there are those who will argue that attending church is something the Bible tells us we must do but he doesn't interpret it that way. ) I've never had what he had in his youth. I feel like I'm babbling. I don't even know what I'm asking here. I just know that I'm hurting in my heart and I need someone to tell me that they get it. PM me if you feel more inclined to share in private but don't worry that posting anything here will offend or upset me. I've pretty much just shared with all of you the most private thing I could ever share...I'm an open book at this point. Okay, hitting submit with my heart in my mouth.
  4. A friend and I have been doing Bible studies "together" for a few years now. Basically we just each do them on our own and when we get together to walk we discuss any questions we have, problems we had with finding the answer, things that stuck out to us, etc.--nothing formal but nice to be studying the same topic. We have used quite a few of the programs from Explorers Bible Study http://www.explorerbiblestudy.org/courses but we were wondering if there are any other similar ones out there. We would like: A Bible study based on studying the scriptures, not just a few scriptures thrown in with a lot of personal commentary. Daily short sessions--like 5-6 days a week or 15-20 minutes vs. a bigger once a week lesson or daily lessons that take a lot more time. A study where we can learn the who, what, where, when, how, why, history, etc. of the scripture being studied. nothing really touchy/feely where it is all emotion based. Personal application is good though. Any ideas for us to check out?
  5. Anyone else starting a One Year Bible for the upcoming new year? I just got 4 new copies for each of us in the family and have a One Year Bible study guide on order to get us started. I'm excited about starting this together as a family and wondered if anyone else has done it before or is starting on the new year?
  6. I read the The Golden Children's Bible aloud to the little ones and we discuss it, but I don't know what to use with the other kids. We did BSGFAA 1 last year and I don't want to continue with it. I’d like something we can all use together even if the littlies don't completely grasp it right now. I think I want something that digs into why we believe what we believe. Any suggestions?
  7. I want a 4 year rotation of Bible study from a protestant/reformed perspective, set up like tapestry of grace, does such a beast exist? We have a super fabulous Sunday school program at church, but I would like to have all my kids studying the same portion of the word, but at different depth levels...
  8. I finally am holding Discovering Mathematics 1A in my hand, and am very pleased with what I see. I have been worried that it would be too much to do DM with LoF Beg. Algebra, but I think it's going to work great for my ds. Like LoF, the problem sets in DM are not too long, although I am sure they will make ds think. The first book is going to be a fair amount of review, but taking things like factors and mulitples to a more sophisticated level. Also, I've gotten to really look at Explorer's Bible Study. I'll be using Beginnings II--God's Promises with my younger two dc, and Quest--In the Beginning with my elder two. From first glance, these texts only teach what is actually in the Bible, without adding any sectarian layers of meaning, which is exactly what I was looking for. The questions in the Quest level are very nice, and will make my dc think without being too hard. I just need to figure out how I'm going to have them share one book, as I didn't have the $$ for two. ;) I also think that Hakim's Story of Science is going to work well for my middle schoolers, along with the kit Milestones in Science. The reading level looks just right, and it looks interesting, as well. I am still not sure about the guide that goes with it. We're going to try some of the activities/worksheets in the guide, but if it feels like busy work, we'll just drop it. One thing I've realized, though, is that I've created more work for myself this year. I want a discussion component to LL, Explorer's Bible, and Story of Science, so I'm going to have to pre-read everything I assign my middle schoolers. We start on the 21st, so I guess I'd better get busy. :D
