  6. Hi, We have been using the standards edition of Singapore math since 4th grade. My son is in 6th currently and it turns out they no longer produce a home instructor's guide for this grade level....grr. The only option is the very pricey teacher's guide. Has anyone used the grade 6 level without the guide? I like the guide, it gives me nice background info, alternative approaches, and the answers! Don't know if I can stomach spending $60 after shipping on it. It would be difficult to switch to the US edition at this point, so not sure what to do.
  7. If a child has done Singapore Math through most of 6B, and are having a rocky start to Jacob's Algebra, would you do a prealgebra program, even though you would not need much of it, or would you do Keys to Algebra? In the past, we have done Keys to. He says he would like to just do the Keys to. He hasn't really tried much else and even if we did preAlgebra, he would not need the entire time. He just needs to get comfortable with using variables.
  8. I know this belongs on the Logic Stage board, but I posted there a few days ago and no one has answered. So I was hoping people who have BTDT could help. We are at the end of Singapore Math. We are part way through 6B. There are tons of reviews in the textbook. It seems as if the textbook is at least half review. We have skipped over reviews a lot in the last few books because son just seemed to really get things. Plus, we had done extra books like Keys to Fractions. Now we are in the last book of the series. We plan to do Jacob's Algebra next, which I already own. Do you think it would be a mistake to continue to skip over the reviews? We will still complete the workbook at 100%. I seem to recall some people saying they skipped the entire 6B level and went on to algebra. Has anyone had issues in algebra if they skipped the textbook reviews?
  9. Hello all, This is my first post here, so hopefully I won't unwittingly break any etiquette rules! I searched back several pages and tried using the search function, but didn't come up with much. Is anyone familiar with the differences between the homeschool guide and teachers guide? Is the teachers guide more robust or something? Any recommendations? Background: This is our first year homeschooling, we'll be teaching our twin sons who both do well with math and should probably be doing more difficult work than what school assigned last year. They would be starting 2nd grade this year. The school uses Envisions Math from Pearson, which is supposed to be aligned with common core standards. We plan on using using the US Editions of Singapore math, deciding on the levels after we have the boys try the diagnostic tests on their websites. Any advice is much appreciated!
  10. Background: DD10 will not let me teach her math and she is reluctant to use the Singapore textbook. Still, it seems to be working for her. I've given her math assessments to be sure she's okay. For the last two years, I've looked at other programs since I always worry about the self-teaching of a program that's not considered self-teaching, and I keep obsessing about what to do. I just had a thought about what might work to help her to possibly use Singapore better. It might not be the best idea given my organizational skills, but here goes: I buy a cheap used copy of the PM 5A textbook and cut the binding off. I do the same with the workbook and Intensive Practice book I just bought. Then I make a packet for each lesson/topic with textbook pages first, workbook pages next, and then the Intensive Practice pages. I could staple them or bind them together in some way for her to work through sequentially. I wouldn't mind ideas about how to do that. This might not really solve the problem, but do you think it's worth trying?
  11. How come US edition doesn't have the test books? Will standard edition be as good as US edition if I skip the test book? I just don't think we can finish the text A and B books in a year along with the workbook and test book.

  16. I am transitioning my oldest over to homeschool this year (2nd grade) after completing kindergarten & 1st grade at our local private christian school. I know I want use Singapore Math but I was wondering about which edition would be best to get. I see a US Ed, Standards Ed (CA Standards) or Common Core Ed. Thanks, Sarah
  17. The last couple books, and only then, we skipped the reviews in the textbook. We did everything else in the textbook and did 100% of the workbook. Half of 6B is review. Since it is the last book, I find myself feeling a little like we should do all the textbook reviews. (we do the workbook reviews, everything in the workbook, regardless). My qualifier in the past is that he has to do the textbook reviews if he seems to struggle at all with the workbook. Well, he is not really struggling with the workbook, but things are not going as quickly as before. He hates fractions. And 6B seems to get heavier in to several step word problems where the student is supposed to solve with rod diagrams instead of X's and Y's. We plan Jacob's Algebra for algebra. I already have the book and the TM.

  19. Is there something out there that is similar to Singapore math, but less pricey? Singapore is technically a type of math right? Any other curriculums out there that use the Singapore methods? I really want to try it, especially with dd6, but I cant seem to order it. I just keep thinking about spending $18 for a guide and $13 a piece for a textbook and workbook twice a year. I understand this is could equal the price of a full math curriculum per year, but I have older children who have used Abeka, Saxon etc. so I already have that curriculum on hand and would just have to buy a workbook. Can anyone recommend something similar or help me to finally order Singapore.

  22. I use Math in Focus to teach math to my 7 year old. He loves it! My younger son, who is 5, however, can't sit still, listen to explanations and go through the all the exercises. After a few problems, he is ready to move on to the next topic. He was able to complete Singapore 1A and 1B but now that we have moved to Singapore Math 2A, it's become more and more difficult to complete the pages. We use the workbooks only. After answering one or two questions, he simply walks away and refuses to do more. He is able to add/subtract three digit numbers with regrouping, he knows multiplication (tables 1-12) and division. Some topics are too easy for him, such as introduction to multiplication and division. Other parts, especially word problems, is where he has most difficulty sitting still, listening to explanations, writing down the equations, etc. I've been skipping around to make it a little bit more fun and interesting for him but I'm afraid there will be gaps and I don't like the lack of continuity. Can anyone recommend other Singapore math books that are more "fun" and cater to younger children with less attention span? Thanks!

  24. Dear all, DS5 is good with math , but he needs a more hands on approach . He loves Singapore Math , but I think something as Miquon will give him a better start as he likes to work with manipulatives . I am going to start with Singapore 1A Standard Edition as well . How can I make it work and how do I plan this. Does he need to start with Miquon and finish the orange book ,or work with both curriculums in a day /week. DS just finished Singqpore Earlybird B . Thanks in advanced , Visitor
  25. I have a mathy ds8 who just finished the Miquon series. I think we are going to try Singapore. But I am so confused about all the books that they have! :confused1: I am starting ds8 in 3A. He probably could do 3B, but he is easily intimidated and rather perfectionistic. I think we'll go with the Standards Edition. Can someone tell me what is the difference between the textbook and the workbook? The samples look a lot alike. From the description of Extra Practice, I am thinking we don't need that. What says the hive? What is the difference between Intensive Practice and Challenging Word Problems? Should I considering getting one or both of these? What level? Thanks for all your help!
