  3. With three months left, it doesn't matter whether you stay or go. If you go, there will be decompressing and you have about 10 weeks of academics to come up with and social ops to provide. If you stay, you can use those 10 weeks to determine what was done academically and what you want to do about it his placement for next year. Me, I looked at the standards based report card and realized the school had zero intention of teaching anyone anything above 'just passing'. So, the condition of staying in school was that the kiddo had to work with me to stay on grade level or higher, at the proficient level. He used his time wisely in fifth to read, and that left math and composition for me during the school year, then remediation of penmanship and spelling over the summer. All of the rest he had learned from scouting -- field trips to historical places, the TV studio etc. As a teacher, you know how to read grade level standards...and you know how to evaluate. Have him write an essay, check his independent reading level, and use something like a Singapore Math placement test to figure his math out. Did he grow academically?
  4. My 2 7th graders have gone through all the previous Singapore books as well as the Intensive Math. It seems there is a huge jump from 6B to the Discovering Math 7 book and it is time consuming (as in 3 hours a day sometimes just to do 1/2 a lesson). I love Singapore--my kids have great mental math skills and problem solving skills, but they are now really hating math and I must say I dread that part of the day. Any recommendations for a different curriculum? Thanks, Mary

Singapore NEM Level 2 integrated math. Textbook –The book is in good usable condition with cover wear but the pages are clean and the binding is solid. Teachers Manual – Not used but show some shelf wear. Solutions Manual – Not used but shows some shelf wear. Student Workbook - The workbook has extra problems beyond the textbook and also includes tests. My daughter wrote in her answers and her work in pencil for the first test, but this has been erased. Also, I tore out the answers in the back, but they are stapled together and included with the set. I am asking $30.00 for the entire set and that includes media mail shipping. I accept payment via paypal.

  6. If you use Singapore Math US, do you also use Challenging Word Problems and/or Intensive Practice? Are they essential to the program or for supplementing when needed? We did Singapore US Kindergarten A and B and then moved on to Math Mammoth 1A. I really like how simple MM is to use, and the price. I bought the Pdf, so one time purchase, resuable for all the kids, and no shipping as we live overseas. But there is so much on a page that dd gets bogged down with it. She understands the concepts, but balks at how many problems are on a page, even if I don't make her do so many. I feel like it's a lot of review after SM KA & KB, but I don't feel confident enough in dd's abilities to skip too much, either. I'm considering switching to SM for the school year and using MM to supplement and for summer review. SM just seems complicated to me with so many pieces (IG, Textbook, Workbook, IP, CWP) We're using MFW , so for other MFW users...do you use the MFW Daily Lesson Plans or the Home Instructor's Guide (as sold by Rainbow Resources or Amazon)? The MFW's package is more attractive with just the text, wb and simplified IG. I'd love to hear the advice of those of you who have similar experiences... Thanks in advance!

  10. Primary math, 6B standards edition. I feel that there a few mistakes every few pages in the teachers guide, some obvious typos and other just plain wrong answers but can't seem to find an up to date compilation of fixes. Anyone have similar issues with Singapore- is there somewhere on line with these corrections? I've looked, and also emailed the company Thanks for any help
  11. We use Singapore math. Typically, I teach a lesson using the HIG as a guide, work the example problems from the textbook together, and then assign the workbook as independent work. Then I check the work that day and have the child fix any missed problems. WELL---my daughter has some bad habits when it comes to math. She *always* misses about half of the problems. (This is not a new problem. She has done this her entire school career since first grade!) In an actual class, she would probably just get an F on every assignment...right? And then she may have to repeat the class if she fails the subject. But in our homeschool, failure is not really an option...right? The goal is to teach. I won't move on until she shows she understands and can do these types of problems. SO--- I hand her back the assignment and she corrects her careless mistakes until she gets a 100%. She can always correct her work, and so I believe the problem is not in understanding...the problem is not being careful. I was hoping that the natural consequence of having to re-do half her math each day would be enough to help her start to do better. Her school day is going longer because she wasn't careful the first time. However, after 4 years, that doesn't seem to be working. (hitting myself on the head.) My concern is how I can prepare her for a class that mom isn't teaching.....when you can't just re-do your math each day. The answer you give the first time counts. BTW--She also does the same things on tests/quizzes when I give those.

  14. We are on 5A. My child was in public school. He came home last year. I found one of the books to be redundant, which is likely because there is a different scope and sequence. I am not worried about that at all. I used this with an older child and have worked with Singapore Math before. He really wanted the Singapore Math, so we accepted this issue. I gave him the placement test for 5A and found that he had two topics he still needed to learn. I got the book anyway then because he needs those topics. It is order of operations and the area ones. The rest he has. Overall, 1/3 of the book would be new. I am thinking of still having him do 100% of the workbook, so he can use the pages for topics he already knows for review. But then only doing the stuff out of the textbook that is new. Unless, of course, he has trouble with those topics in the workbook. So still having him do the entire workbook will show me if he actually has trouble in these areas that he seemed to know weeks ago when he took the test. Would you consider this a mistake? We already started the book so I do not want to go back and purchase IP or anything. I want to work with what I have. edited to add: he is a 6th grader. I know not to think about "he is behind" but he really is. His test scores always put him in the 99th and 98th percentile and his former classmates he was in class with will be moving on to algebra or pre algebra in 7th grade, and I did not home school him so he can end up behind where he would have been if he stayed there.
  15. I loved NEM and had planned to use it. Now, they only sell 1 and 2 and I am unsure how that would translate to American Levels, as in, what would a child go to next if they did 1 and 2, is that Algebra and Geometry? Or just one of those? Anyway, I saw a Discovery Mathematics book the other day and thought it looked great. But I cannot seem to find it online. Plus, I would like all reviews and information about it. I already posted about this on the K-8 board.

  18. I just want to try out Beast Academy. I own all the Singapore Math textbooks and just need to add new workbooks for additional children. When I did the placement exams for Beast Academy, son had no problem, but was weak on mental math. He learns math easily so as I explained mental math to him, he was quickly getting it. I would hate to hold him back over mental math. I am trying to decide if we should just start with Singapore Math US edition 2b since it is largely mental math. Or if we should go ahead to BA 3a. I am leaning toward the Singapore Math to start but wondering what people with experience with Beast Academy would say.
  19. Does anyone know if these are aligned with the Primary Mathematics version of Singapore? Costco has them and I'm tying to find out for a friend (admittedly, I'm curious too). If you have the student text books and the HIGs, can you use this workbook instead of ordering an A and a B workbook from the official site? If yes, are they similar to the workbooks or the extra practice books or... ? If no, are there any other more cost effective methods for getting SM workbooks? 21. We are working in Primary Math 3A. How would we draw the bar model to go along with this word problem? 96 children divided themselves into groups of 4. How many groups were there? It's a division problem. 96 is the whole and each group has 4 children, but how do you show that on a bar model if you're trying to determine the number of groups? Where would the ? go to show the part you are trying to figure out? Thanks for the input!
  22. Good points. Math Mammoth was a fail with my oldest and I see it being a fail for the same reasons with my other boys (pages too crowded, etc). But Singapore math is an idea... I used it several years ago and liked it, we ended up switching partly because it was a bad fit for my daughter and I was still trying to keep everyone in the same math back then ? and partly because I was letting the curriculum be my master instead of my servant. ?I think I could use it again and do better with it this time. My youngest is just TK and I do think I will stick with RS over Singapore for him this year, he's not ready for the amount of writing/lack of fun in essentials (I have used that before). Unless someone writes my heart's desire program in the next two weeks... If right start math and cuisenairre rods/miquon had a baby, that math program is what I want. LOL Eta: you know right start is pretty much the math equivalent of AAR. And that program made me want to poke my eyes out. ? I used it with both my middle two, but neither finished it. None of us could take it anymore.
  23. I am going to be ordering Singapore math books. I've always been interested in them, but I guess with all the editions and things it was just confusing and I never ordered them. I have decided on the US editions. I'm looking at possibly ordering 1A, 2B, and 3B. Would I need the teachers edition or just the textbook and workbook? What about all these other workbooks? I read there was one for word problems and then an extra practice book. Are there any manipulatives I would need to order to have on hand? Also, I want to make sure I have this correct. If they pass the placement test for 3B, that means I would order 4A, right?

  25. We've changed every single thing since we started school in late July, at least once... So, misses: Sonlight PreK, A, C I've finally come to see that I don't like having a nitty gritty syllabus. It stresses me out. And I like to take history much, much slower. And Bible, too. Sonlight LA C and A: too many bits and pieces and not enough practice and direct instruction. Too much writing about made up subjects. I'm a CM Narration lover at heart.
