  1. How come US edition doesn't have the test books? Will standard edition be as good as US edition if I skip the test book? I just don't think we can finish the text A and B books in a year along with the workbook and test book.

I have the following Singapore Primary Mathmatics books and CDs All are US edition. All are used unless otherwise noted. No writing inside unless noted. Covers have some wear and tear, they are used! I would prefer to sell this as a whole set, and if you take it all your price is $175 which is a huge savings if you're looking to get started. I'll probably wait and see if anyone wants it all before I divide it up. Shipping will depend on how many you want, I will of course choose the cheapest shipping (media mail) unless you request differently. Textbooks: $6 each 1A- scribbling on cover, no writing inside. 2A 2B 3A- small tear on cover 3B- tear to cover has been taped 4A 4B 5A 5B 6A Workbook: $9 4B Brand New Home Instructors Guides: $12 each 2A 2B 3A 3B 4A - 1 mental math page in back torn out, but included 4B 5A 5B 6A Multimedia: $10 each Rainbow Rock-used but works Vroot & Vroom-used but works Wiggle Woods-used but works

  3. The elementary books are not something I'd use for a struggling math student at all. The topics are out of order. Multiplication and sigma notation are in the same book. Set theory starts near addition. Slope is in one, there's number play with using a specific group to make any number..just, no. I'd rather get a Singapore math Challenging Word Problems book 2 levels below current work (or a FAN book) - and I love Fred. I adore the alphabet series and my kid has slept with them after rereading ones he had finished. It just doesn't seem it would be a good use of money in this situation.

  5. square_25, my older ds is on the extreme end of concept driven. I'm a science person, not a math person, so when he was little, we just played shop. I had no grand visions or pedagogical opinions, I just taught him about money, made up funny word problems, estimated stuff, played multiplication war, etc. Then, at the age of 6, having never been introduced to the concepts, he invented algebra, reasonably complex algebra. I had no idea that these thoughts were in his head, none. We had been playing shop. That is when I started reading up on how to teach him. But interestingly, he was extremely computation adverse. He *refused* drill, completely refused to do it. He seemed to only be able to practice his numeracy skills through complex 10 step word problems. It was at the age of 8 that he decided that all teaching was cheating, in fact, that all textbook explanations were cheating. I'm actually not sure how he learned fractions - he must have had insight and just confirmed his method by checking his answers in the back of the book, because he *refused* to be taught how to do it by me or by any written explanation. At the time he was working his way through the word problems in singapore math intensive practice. Over time, I came to believe that his mathematical skill was so high, that drill of any sort was the equivalent of proof-reading a phone book. You might have good intentions, but there is just no way you can actually *do* something so boring. However, this boy then took 3 years to get through AoPS intro algebra, and this slow speed just about gave me a heart attack. But he had to do it on his own. And he had to do it at his own pace. And he had to *derive* every. single. concept independently. But you know what, he was on the NZ IMO team at 15, and now is taking grad level math classes at MIT as a freshman. So his very strange path was apparently just right for him. My point is that you are mathy and your child is mathy. Perhaps there is just NO drill in her future. I remember my son memorizing his subtraction facts while concurrently working through AoPS algebra independently. Conceptually, he was far far far ahead, but when it came to *computation* he was very average. I've often wondered what would have happened to him if he had been forced to do math in school. My guess is that it would have drained the passion right out of him. I'm so grateful to be able to have offered him another path. Ruth in NZ
  6. My older children used MUS or CLE for early elementary math. I am looking at other options for my younger two though. I am really drawn to Singapore Math because I like the samples, and the colorful textbook. Is Singapore difficult to teach everyday? I am also considering Math Mammoth or CLE. Of these three, which one would you choose, and why?

Math in Focus Grade 5 Answer Key- This contains smaller reproductions of the student books with answers. It has answers for the textbook and the workbook. I used this in place of the teacher guides to save money. $10ppd. Singapore Math 5A (US Edition)- $7 ppd for both books. Textbook Home Instructor Guide- The guide had some essential oil spilled on it. It smells kind of minty like wintergreen. It didn't affect the readability. The binding is a little loose and has a few erased pencil marks and a small stain on a couple pages. I can send more pictures upon request.

  10. I am transitioning my oldest over to homeschool this year (2nd grade) after completing kindergarten & 1st grade at our local private christian school. I know I want use Singapore Math but I was wondering about which edition would be best to get. I see a US Ed, Standards Ed (CA Standards) or Common Core Ed. Thanks, Sarah
  11. When we had to have family step in to help with homeschooling (dd/cancer, another dd/NICU for an extended period), we had to keep things very simple and very minimal to actually get it done. Math: do the next lesson in the book. CLE math is very easy for a non-teacher to grade, Singapore math bar models caused my mom’s brain to melt, iykwim. Phonics: we went to workbooks—do the next lesson. Art: Artistic Pursuits kits with the accompanying supplies were a huge hit. Sonlight science kits (with supplies) were a huge hit for my elementary aged kids at the time. Basically, very clear assignments with all supplies included were the only things that got done. In terms of filling the time, SOTW audio history, Kumon books, and a basket of books helped. I would reserve them online and dh would do a library pickup weekly. My older children read a lot to the youngest because they had more tolerance for it. Also, be sure your sister can set up video chatting. Not only will it help maintain family bonds, but being available daily (at some point) to answer questions, ask accountability stuff (show me what you did in math today!) and to offer moral support was really helpful. We used FaceTime, but Skype is also great.
  12. My dc learned both at school. It took two days in grade three to master the traditional add/subtract algorithm as he already fluently composed and decomposed. You don't want to undo her understanding, she'll need that for future coursework. Consider Singapore Math.
  13. I use Math in Focus to teach math to my 7 year old. He loves it! My younger son, who is 5, however, can't sit still, listen to explanations and go through the all the exercises. After a few problems, he is ready to move on to the next topic. He was able to complete Singapore 1A and 1B but now that we have moved to Singapore Math 2A, it's become more and more difficult to complete the pages. We use the workbooks only. After answering one or two questions, he simply walks away and refuses to do more. He is able to add/subtract three digit numbers with regrouping, he knows multiplication (tables 1-12) and division. Some topics are too easy for him, such as introduction to multiplication and division. Other parts, especially word problems, is where he has most difficulty sitting still, listening to explanations, writing down the equations, etc. I've been skipping around to make it a little bit more fun and interesting for him but I'm afraid there will be gaps and I don't like the lack of continuity. Can anyone recommend other Singapore math books that are more "fun" and cater to younger children with less attention span? Thanks!

  15. The last couple books, and only then, we skipped the reviews in the textbook. We did everything else in the textbook and did 100% of the workbook. Half of 6B is review. Since it is the last book, I find myself feeling a little like we should do all the textbook reviews. (we do the workbook reviews, everything in the workbook, regardless). My qualifier in the past is that he has to do the textbook reviews if he seems to struggle at all with the workbook. Well, he is not really struggling with the workbook, but things are not going as quickly as before. He hates fractions. And 6B seems to get heavier in to several step word problems where the student is supposed to solve with rod diagrams instead of X's and Y's. We plan Jacob's Algebra for algebra. I already have the book and the TM.
  16. At that level, I gave my very-independent, hard-working son Singapore Math Intensive Practice books 5 and 6 and he worked through them on his own before moving into AOPS.

  19. I have a third grader who really doesn't like math, to the point of nearly crying everyday. She used Singapore Math US Edition last year and is using it again this year. She practically cried daily last year, but I wanted to stick with SM because it's such a solid program and she does surprisingly well in math. I have two fourth graders who are doing well with SM and I wanted to keep everyone in the same program. Anyway, I again am struggling with her and we are in our fourth week of school. I am crazy tempted to switch programs, but I really like SM. Both my husband and I did well in math and value it - we want all our kids to do well in math. Our fourth graders are doing well and even my 3 year old has shown some nice math skills. My third grader IS math-minded - she can compute math problems mentally and learned the multiplication table at just seven years old. She works on standard multi-digit addition and subtraction numbers very easily. She conceptually understands math. She just has no interest in it, like none. She loves to draw and spends about 2 hours a day (at least) drawing. She fills up notebook after notebook with all her drawings. If we decide to change programs, which math program is really solid? I don't want to give her "easy" math because she doesn't enjoy it, she's capable of challenging herself, but I don't know what to do.

  21. Dear all, DS5 is good with math , but he needs a more hands on approach . He loves Singapore Math , but I think something as Miquon will give him a better start as he likes to work with manipulatives . I am going to start with Singapore 1A Standard Edition as well . How can I make it work and how do I plan this. Does he need to start with Miquon and finish the orange book ,or work with both curriculums in a day /week. DS just finished Singqpore Earlybird B . Thanks in advanced , Visitor
  22. If your child is doing (or recently has done) 3rd grade math, what topics/procedures of multiplying and dividing is he or she doing for this grade? Background: My DD #1 is now in 3rd grade. Up until this year we were working with Singapore Math Standards and MEP. This year I changed over to Beast Academy (3A-D) and Math Mammoth (Grade 3) at her request. I happen to have Singapore Math Grade 3 from working with her older brother and was looking it over recently. To my surprise (because I didn't remember) the division and multiplication is more advanced than what is presented in Beast and Math Mammoth. This year, she has been doing basic multiplication tables through 12, multiplication and division fact families through 12, multiplying and dividing word problems and some basic dividing with remainders ( two digit dividends like 56 divided by 6). She also has been multilpying and dividing numbers by 10's (45 x 10, 568 x 100, etc). The Singapore 3rd grade program has three digit numbers multiplied by one digit numbers (with "carrying") and long division with three digit dividends. It looks more advanced than what she has been doing this year. So, now I am wondering if I should use the Singapore Math grade 3 materials as a supplement for multiplying and dividing? Or, is Singapore Math for 3rd grade pretty far advanced as far as multiplying and dividing goes? I know it's ahead generally but maybe its REALLY advanced as far as multiplying and dividing? She will be tested in about three months (for my state) but I cannot see the test until about 4 weeks before I use it so I don't know for sure what will be on it.

  24. I have a mathy ds8 who just finished the Miquon series. I think we are going to try Singapore. But I am so confused about all the books that they have! :confused1: I am starting ds8 in 3A. He probably could do 3B, but he is easily intimidated and rather perfectionistic. I think we'll go with the Standards Edition. Can someone tell me what is the difference between the textbook and the workbook? The samples look a lot alike. From the description of Extra Practice, I am thinking we don't need that. What says the hive? What is the difference between Intensive Practice and Challenging Word Problems? Should I considering getting one or both of these? What level? Thanks for all your help!
  25. Perfect squares, mental math, and prime numbers. Strangely, my kid who claims to not like math loves the 'Balance Benders' puzzles from Critical Thinking Company and loved doing mental subtraction a la Singapore math (which taught that to subtract 19 from 35, you took 10 from the 30, subtracted 9, then added the 1 back to the 5, then you subtracted 10 from the remaining 20). I had dreaded teaching this sort of subtraction to this particular child, but they loved it. Kid who was super good at math at an early age doesn't enjoy the puzzle-style books as much, but at some point extrapolated knowledge of perfect squares into what they thought might be a rule about how to identify the next number in a series (don't remember if it was a square or a cube)..they turned out to be right, but it took my husband a page of math to prove it. Kiddo said that they pondered perfect squares as they were falling asleep. Lesson for me - you never know what will catch their fancy.
