  1. :iagree: My bf is doing FLL with her daughter who is 5, but also doing 1st grade work. I also plan to do this with my dd. The reason I am homeschooling is so my children won't get just an average education. Good luck and welcome! :001_smile:
  2. I'm not exactly sure where I read this, but I wrote it down when I saw it. It is not recommended to start FLL until you are at least to lesson 140 in OPG. I also had that spelling and writing should start around lesson 115. Hope that helps!
  3. I can't imagine doing it, but if you don't think it would be a problem then I would say go for it! I would definitely add on though.
  4. I was in college in CA. One of my friends called and woke us (me and my roommate) up. It was pretty early, and we had no idea what she was saying. She told us to turn on the tv, and we turned it on right before the second plane flew into the WTC. We were shocked. They ended up canceling school for a couple days, so we all just sat around watching the news for hours.
  5. I am so glad to see that people like this curriculum! I have been planning to use it when my dd is older, but I hadn't read too much about it on the forum. I spent some time checking it out at our homeschool convention this summer, and I thought it looked perfect for us. I'm excited to use it someday!
  6. I have been trying to decide between these two as well. I plan to use TOG eventually, but for some reason I just don't really like Year 1. Anyway, I have looked at both of these programs extensively, and I think I am going to mostly do the SOTW AG, but I may just go ahead and buy History Odyssey for a supplement. The pdf version isn't that expensive, and if you buy the SOTW AG on Amazon it's a really good deal. I think it was only $23.
  7. I met my best friend at church when I was in middle school, and my closest friend after I got married...I met at church! :D
  8. Gulliver is much easier to get through then Don Quixote. That one took me forever! I can't wait until we get to Pride and Prejudice too...even though this will probably be the 10th time I've read it.:001_smile: I just looked at the Veritas website. I'm glad you will have probably figured this out before I need to worry about it, because I like them both too!
  9. My dd has loved the kumon workbooks, and it has helped with her cutting and coloring skills. I just bought some from Amazon recently, and they have a 4 for 3 promotion going on right now. You would get 4 for $21, which isn't too bad. She also really likes the preschool Explode the Code books. They are around $7, I believe.
  10. Here is mine http://livetolearnaz.blogspot.com/2009/08/week-8.html. It was great reading how other people's weeks went. I really want to keep up on my weekly reports, and I think posting them on here every week will help. :001_smile:
  11. DWN has been great for us. It requires no prep work (which is important for me)! It has been something fun that we can do together, and my dd loves it. We don't do the writing though.
  12. Sonlight sells the Berenstain book. Here is a link... http://www.sonlight.com/PS12.html :) I've been thinking about getting this book, and it seems like I should since everyone seems to love it. Everything we are using has been a hit so far. Yeah! We are not doing much since my dd is just in K4, but we have really liked ETC, Abeka math and art. We are slowly doing OPGTR, and that is probably the only thing that my dd does not particularly care for. I think it's great though!
  13. I haven't used it yet, but I'm planning on using it with my dd next year for K. I saw it at the convention and I thought it looked great!
  14. We are planning on getting some billy bookcases for our den, but we have other bookcases from IKEA and they have all held up great. The shelves are very strong, and we have a lot of big, heavy books on them.
  15. I talked to her at the Arizona convention, and this program seams great. Sadly, I won't need it until next year!
  16. I used a Mailbox book called Storytime from A to Z for book ideas and projects. I already had quite a few of these books, and I was able to find the rest at the library. You can see sample pages here http://www.theeducationcenter.com/cgi-bin/tec/productDetail.jsp?OID=536932341&BV_SessionID=@@@@1775701148.1248732026@@@@&BV_EngineID=dcadegkggmjgebffkcglcfmdgmg.0 I wish I had done more research online for ideas. It seems like there are so many great things out there. My ds just turned 1, so I guess I can use them in a couple years!
  17. Starfall.com is a great free website for learning the letters/sounds. We are also using the ETC beginner books and The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. She is doing really well with this combination!
  18. I would definitely stop in Flagstaff for a little while. It's a very cute little town, and the last reprieve from the crazy heat that you will endure when you get to Phoenix. Good luck with the move!
  19. The Easy French is one program I have been looking at. They have a Spanish program as well. It seems like it would be a good fit for younger children. I wanted something that my 3 year old could start pretty soon. www.theeasyfrench.com
  20. We do end up taking certain things up and down, mostly because my 3 year old daughter likes to bring things down that I want upstairs. I doubt that will change anytime soon, but the best advice I can give is to have cleaning supplies on both floors. For some reason I am much better at keeping the house clean now that I have everything I need on both floors. I hate cleaning though so I am lazy about it. :tongue_smilie: I still haven't figured out how to deal with the school stuff though. I have our loft set up as the school room, but then our computer is downstairs so I do most of my planning downstairs. I usually just end up taking things up and down. Hopefully, I will come up with a better way soon!
  21. I was just thinking the same thing! I graduated from Pepperdine University in 2002. I miss it there!
  22. Another book that may help is Loving Our Kids On Purpose by Danny Silk. It's a great parenting book that really focuses on our relationship with our kids, and teaching them to make decisions and take responsibility for themselves.
  23. My dd is going to be 4 in a few months, and we just started preschool. We are probably doing more than a lot of people on here would think is appropriate, but she loves it! All we do is 10 minutes of math (Abeka K4), Get Ready for the Code a, and The Ordinary Parents Guide to Reading. Then we will do "science" (looking at books and drawing a picture). I really think it's fine, because she enjoys it so much. If that were to change I wouldn't force her to do it, and I know 3 year olds that would not be able to handle any type of school at that age. I think it really depends on the child. On my blog I have everything we are doing this year, and how I have planned it. Also, there is a link to my friends blog on there and she has a ton of info about curriculum and planning for this age. Hope that helps and good luck!
  24. I just found this the other day for art. I may use this a few times a year, just to do something other than craft type projects. http://www.getinvolvedineducation.com/pdfs/For-Program-Managers/Meet-the-Masters-Program-Manual.pdf
