  1. jeri, great job! I'm still working through Power 90. :D

I'm curious, how close did (are) you monitor(ing) nutrition during P90 and now during P90X?

    What about everyone else? :bigear:

With 8 in the family, I can't afford that! During Power 90 I tried to clean up my act by being much more conscious of what I ate. My problem is portion control! I really love food and love to cook. But I won't say that we eat very unhealthily. I don't have chips/soda/cookies lying around the house. But I only lost about 10 lbs from Jan through May.

Since I started P90X 10 days ago, I've really turned up my attention to food. I kept a cal/fat/pro/fiber log last week, stocked up on some high protein foods (wasa bread and cottage cheese, almonds, l/f milk products, etc.), and am really focusing on portion control. I gave myself permission to ignore this one night a week to account for a bday party or outing. This is probably the hardest thing for me since I really do love good food! But I think it is what is going to make a huge difference in my fitness. I'm hoping that it can become a habit, just like working out.

I think the most important thing is to have good food that's available when you are hungry. For example, this past weekend I cooked a couple of chicken breasts and put them in the refrig. That in a whole grain wrap with lettuce/tomato will make a great lunch!

Other people have said that you have to watch your diet while you are doing these programs and I agree!

  2. He will be working south of Philly off of 95 in Lester. Looks like we could live in PA or NJ.

Background: We used to live in CT which I understand is like NJ: no reporting, no testing, etc. But no support either. We are moving from a place where we get tons of support but no requirements. I actually like this a lot!

Now that I have one entering high school, it might be nice to have access to a science lab, afterschool programs, sports, etc. and I don't know if that's possible in NJ. But maybe you don't get that in PA either. I hate what I read about the PA homeschooling laws, but does the huge amount of control also mean access to extra services?

What about cost of living in each suburb? It seems like PA has very high taxes. But having traveled through that southwest corner of NJ, I don't recall much in the way of "civilization." (Don't mean to offend anyone here!)

For those of you who read earlier that we thought we were going to Fairfax Cty, well, that's still on the drawing board. We are waiting . . . and waiting . . . and more waiting!

    thanks.

  3. I have been athletic in the past but then stopped and gained weight. Never obese but definitely heavy. Anyway, I was doing TKD and my right knee started to bother me. Stopped TKD when we moved but knee still bothered me. Couldn't run, couldn't really walk without pain some days. Couldn't even squat down since it felt like there was fluid in the knee all the time. Finally went to an ortho who had an MRI done. He looked at it and said that there are no cartilage issues (a big relief) but it's something with my femur and he didn't know what it was exactly. I also had my nurse-sister run the MRI by some other orthos she knew and they said the same thing. Didn't inspire confidence. Anyway, they all said take 6 mths off where I did nothing that would hurt it. I did that and found I could do spinning and an elliptical ok. Then I started Power 90. Didn't think I could do it since I knew there were lots of squats, etc. Well, somehow that helped immensely and I am now pain free! I can run (don't do it often since I don't want to aggravate anything) which I could not do, and now I'm doing P90x which is even more leg work. So, what I'm saying is don't discount the knee stuff. I am now convinced that all the muscles that hold your knee in place must have something to do with it. Maybe give it a try but at a slow pace.

  4. It's the version Tony did before P90X. I really wouldn't have stayed motivated if I had started with P90X. In Jan I went to the gyn for a regular checkup and she said my blood pressure was really high. This spooked me (I'm *only* 47, have six kids under 14 and have *never* had high blood pressure!) So, I decided to get going. Ordered Power 90 (which as you saw above takes forever when you are depending on military mail) and started walking 3 miles a day about 5 days a week. Power 90 arrived in late Feb so I started it beginning of March. It was hard at first, but only 35-40 min each day. Kept going with it, lost about 10 lbs and a total of 3 in on my hips and waist. Finally felt ready for P90X and now I'm loving it. But I must say that I'm glad I started P90X in the summer since I do have more time available while kids are not doing school and sleeping in a bit. I'm so hoping that this "addiction" has become that, just like brushing my teeth. I know it's working and I'm feeling sssooooo good! Anyway, I think it you want to start with a minimal workout, Power 90 is a good choice (although I hear good things about the ones LG mentioned too.) Try your library before you buy! Lots of them have this either on the shelves or through ILL. The only thing you need for Power 90 is stretchy bands or dumbells (my son made me some out of empty 96 oz juice containers filled with sand until my bands arrived.) But start something! You'll be so glad you did!

  5. I knwe that there was one more person to mention but couldn't remember who it was! Yes, you're another inspiration. So please keep the encouragement going! Jennifer, thanks for the tip on Insanity. I *do* still want to do it and I love that style of take-no=prisoner working out. Amanda, JUST DO IT! You can. As Tony says, just push the play button and do what you can!

    Going to bed.

  6. I am so psyched to say that I have just finished my first week of P90X classic! I was doing the "baby" P90X (Power 90) and felt I had outgrown it. So, dh bought me P90X for my b-day on June 15! Alas, it has not come yet (we live overseas and with military mail it probably went on the boat instead of the plane, so it could be another month yet!). But I found out that a friend bought P90X *and* Insanity but is not using them! (She runs marathons instead, lol.) So, she let me borrow them.

I am loving P90X! I tried Insanity and it was just too much. I mean, on the first dvd the people in the class were dying by the end! So, I'm going to shelve that until I've mastered P90X.

I'm really happy with my progress so far. I did TKD for 3 years before moving overseas so doing kenpo today was the best so far. Yoga was kind of weird and I must say that I hate downward dog, but I think I will grow to like it. Had a bit of difficulty finding a way to loop bands over a beam or something but figured out a way to do it today.

I'm 48 and hope to lose about 25 pounds. I also want to start running but feel to heavy right now to give it a lot of attention. I love the muscle stuff--dh and I used to lift in college together so that's great. I've always played sports but in the last 10 years, with 6 kids either by adoption or birth, a move overseas, homeschooling, the lbs have settled int.

Thanks to all of you who are motivating me! Especially Uhura and Jennifer (?) who does the P90X plus Insanity! You guys rock and I look forward to your posts!

  7. with my now 9th grader. I used it after SM6 just because it was too early to jump into Algebra. I found RM6 was really solid for two reasons. First, it gives a lot more practice for those SM 5 and 6 problems. You know, the ones where they teach a topic, then there are four problems. The student gets two of the three wrong, but the topic doesn't really baffle him/her. And the problem sets are really good!

Second, RM is much more theoretical than SM. So it makes a nice transition between the "pattern" of work in SM and the theory of doing the problems.

DS is finishing up 6B in the early fall and he will definitely do RM6 since he's only 11!

    HTH.

  8. for my youngest three, I started them with RS. It's a huge difference at that age. We used RS A, B and sort of C, then moved to SM 1B (I think). I think it's great for young ones but I wouldn't have the time or patience to use it much past 1st or 2nd.

  9. but it didn't work so well with these books. They are really interesting to read! But I think that because of that, they are difficult to outline. Each chapter usually starts with a story, and then they weave the information into what you are reading. Anyway, it was like pulling teeth to outline (but I'm not an outline expert!) so I broke down and bought the student and teacher books and we went with the questions in those. I think a more traditional nonfiction book would be easier to outline. Sorry I don't sound so positive, but as they say around here, your mileage may vary! YMMV

  10. How long do these bands last? I got the pink one with the Power90 program and outgrew that one pretty fast. Ordered the next set up (magenta, red, green) and now I've outgrown the magenta and am using the red. So, are these things stretching out of shape? Or am I getting stronger? I looked on the web site at how often they need to be replaced but found nothing. So do these need to be replaced becasue they stretch out? Thanks.

  11. Chris, that info on taking two classes is a great help! I have been to the FCPS website and that wasn't even listed. And we know about TJHS. That's something she's definitely interested in!

As to where we are looking to live . . . we have a large fam with 6 kids. We are thinking about Burke/w. springfield, reston or herndon. Maybe Annandale. Depends on cost of housing and what's available. I've already resigned myself to the fact that dh will be on a commuter bus lots of hours. Wish I could say more but we are still in the "wait" mode (which is killing me!). I feel soo relieved to hear about all the classes/clubs/etc. I thought that with a really good school system there wouldn't be a lot of homeschoolers. Couldn't find much on my first swing through with googling homeschooling and FC either.

I "see" you all here all the time, so it's nice to know that I can drop you all a line when we finally hear something! Thanks and I'm all ears if there is more to share . . .

  12. Don't know when we will get the official word, but I think we are headed there. We are Christian but secular is ok (probably not too new age though). I will have a rising 9th, 8th, two 6th, 5th, and a 4th. Thinking about putting the 9th in school, depending on where we live. She is pretty advanced in math/science and needs more challenge. Then again, maybe keep her home. 8th is definitely going to PS! Maybe one of the 6th graders. Definitely the 5th and probably not the 5th.

Ok, so are there active support groups there? Any for older kids that offer math/science? I read that hs kids can not take any courses at ps, right? Can they do the online courses?

    Thanks.
