  1. Why don't you look at Elitetutorsonline.com. My dd has been taking Latin this way for a year, and I don't think it's as much as you are quoted. Plus, you could probably work something out like every other week, or maybe 1/2 hour each week. I'm really pleased with it. Or, is there a German starving student at a university near you that would do it for cheaper? I would not do OSU. DD is taking German III and she is nowhere near as advanced as your dd. jeri
  2. I did this last spring to get ready for P90X and thought it was a really good intro. One thing I like abou the Power90/P90 is that it's a great combo of aerobic/cardio/strength/stretching. I'm not sure if the others do strenth as much. jeri who is now doing Insanity!
  3. I looked through the site though and I can't seem to figure out "how" to build the models they are talking about. For example, the section on Leif Builds a Windmill lists the objectives adn the materials, but where is the part about how to build the different windmills to test? I *love* the storybook section though! Jeri
  4. I needed that encouragement. Well, as Tony would say, this morning I just "pushed play" and made it through the next disk (cardio + something?). And it was easier than the plyo thing (although I was not very good at it!). I like this thread cause I can see what you all are doing and maybe it will help me hang there! jeri
  5. First, Steph congrats on the 1/2 marathon, and Xuzi on the 8.5! I'm so impressed! Well, I started the dreaded Insanity yesterday. Today was the plyo thing where everybody dies in the end and Shaun just keeps going. My thighs are killing me and I can't do a burpee to save my life. Need encouragement! Jeri
  6. it's really hard to find *the* recipe in it since all of the recipes sound about the same! I ditched my copy long ago, but I remember seeing something like 12 recipes for pulled pork. I mean, all you really need are one or two for really GOOD pulled pork. I haven't seen the America's Test Kitchens cookbook on crockpots, but I have three other ones they published and they are all good. So, I second that suggestion, sight unseen! Jeri
  7. I have the KA Whole Wheat Baking book, which I love and use often. In fact, the only breads I haven't tried are the sourdoughs. It looks so daunting to have to take care of the starter! Also, I like to bake several loaves at once since I have a ginormous Bosch mixer. So, would one have to triple the amount of starter that one makes? Or would you just make a second starter instead of throwing out 1/2? Or would you not throw out half? And isn't there anything else to do with the 1/2 they say to throw out? It sounds like it gets expensive! Thanks. Jeri
  8. My son (12) has wrestled against girls in the past and we have no problem with it. The girls I saw today were terrific! jeri
  9. thanks for the suggestion! The only bad thing was that dh wanted to watch old Star Wars or Rocky movies and Netflix doesn't let you access those. :( Wow, I'm entering the age of technology because of you guys! Thanks. jeri
  10. Can you use it to get episodes that have been shown in the past? I mean, can I look for the National Geo show on XXX? So, is it an interface with whatever cable company you have? jeri
  11. We actually used to have Netflix before we moved to Germany and now I understand that you can stream it so you don't have to wait for the movies. I will give that no-high-tech idea a try again. Thanks. jeri
  12. I mean the info is really helpful (yes, I will go back into ciconline and do some diggin), but I don't twitter and I don't even have a smartphone! I must be a dinosaur! Just so you all don't think I'm a complete idiot, we just moved back to the States after being in Germany for three years so a lot has changed anyway. Also, I haven't made any friends yet where we moved to, so it's not like I can ask my neighbor or another hs mom what they do. Ok, back to ciconline and to try to figure out if this new tv we just bought will take some sort of connection to my computer. Thanks! jeri
  13. Ok, I went to the site but I don't get it! Do I just *look* for the videos here and then schedule our cable viewing time (yes, we have cable) around it? Or is there some way to link up to the site to get immediate viewing? Sorry, but like I said, I'm really slow! jeri
  14. from me, who doesn't even know how to turn on our dvd player. (However, I really dislike tv but that's a whole 'nother story.) Where can I get videos of shows that are really creative and show past episodes involving history, science, etc. I don't want to turn on the tv and just see whatever is on the history channel--I want to get that particular show that is about the the battle of Fort Sumter. When we were in a hotel recently, there was some show about how materials deal with movement and heat (i.e. ceramic brakes in a Porsche) and how to keep a ginormous skyscraper in the air during a monsoon. But I don't know what it;s called or how to get that type of show. Second question, if we have Verizon FiOs, can we stream in computer onto the tv? Are my questions even making sense? Thanks for your patience with me! jeri
  15. If you like the Horrible Histories books, you will probably love the videos they have made on history! These are on youtube.com, just google Horrible Histories. We were reading in SOTW 2 about the Viking invasion of England and laughed a lot! Jeri
  16. I think 3 yrs of Latin looks significant, but 1 year of Spanish might get you an order at Taco Bell, but that's it! ;) I would add in another year, and probably even two, or accelerate Spanish (which should be very easy with a background in Latin). just my 2 cents. jeri
  17. I bought the downloads since I have lots of kids who will use it! I must say that I am so impressed with this series! I finally feel like I have a "how to write" series that gives my kid scripted things to write about, clear directions, and help for me. I think my only con is that the writing samples she uses are a bit over my sixth grader's head as a number of them are from adult non-fiction books. but on the pro side of things, they give him excellent information on science and history, and we sometimes head down rabbit trails in those areas. (For example, today we looked at a Discovery channel snippet on hydrothermal vents, a topic about which he knew nothing.) Lov this set! jeri homeschooling a 9th, two 6th, and a 4th 8th and 5th in ps
  18. but some people take a really cheap flight (say Southwest) to a large international airport (say Dulles or JFK or Logan) and then fly from there. I think the biggest problem is making sure you can get from the (usually smaller, local) airport to the international airport with a shuttle or something. jeri
  19. on the advice of my furnace guy and my (gas) water heater guy. They both told me that natural gas is way cheaper than electricity. My dad told me that last year the cost of natural gas dropped 8% and this year it is scheduled to drop another 8% or so. So, I understand that is is quite a bit cheaper. jeri
  20. because we moved from Wiesbaden to northern VA exactly six weeks ago. We got our stuff last Friday and I am still unpacking! I don't feel like I will ever get unpacked! And the movers lost all my kitchen knives. Grrr. So, do you live in Hainerberg or Aukumm? They have great Scouts there if you have Scout age kids! Jeri
  21. and her living situation? Did that ever get resolved? I've been thinking about her and missing her threads . . . jeri
