  1. My mom was a bit like this. Do you remember that Debbie Downer character from Saturday Night Live? That was her exactly. ((hugs)) As she got older and meaner, the things I said to myself when I absolutely had to deal with her were "I can be kind. I can be kind." I only saw her or talked to her when I absolutely had to. Unfortunately, that was doctor appointments as dad couldn't drive her anymore, and she couldn't drive herself. She's dead now. Things are better.
  2. Bakin' without Eggs book by Rosemarie Emro was a life-saver at our house. That's where I got my brownie recipe, my pancake/waffle recipe, my cornbread recipe, and a hundred things in between. Know that you can substitute any liquid for milk in a recipe. We use Energy-G egg replacer or Bob's Red Mill Egg Replacer as a substitute in normal recipes (like from the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook). I don't know if it is missing all your allergens, as we just have milk, egg, peanuts here mostly. But it probably is fine. Bagels tend to be milk, egg, and nut free. My dd is into smoothies and toast for breakfast lately. She also enjoys Applegate sausages. I'm trying to think of breakfast ideas. "Safe" tortillas with refried or smashed beans and bacon. We like Oat Milk here, Silk or Oat Planet or Chobani. Many cereals would probably work (don't know about soy, sorry). Oatmeal.

  4. Well, Dad is in Skilled Nursing with a restricted diet, so we are bringing Easter dinner to him. It will be beef stew (my husband makes a wonderful beef stew with red wine), and chocolate ice cream sundaes for dessert. No bread allowed. Food must have liquid with it. So that's what it will be. It's good stew, though, mmm.
  5. I'm no expert, but I have a heavily visual dd. She learned more and less because I had a large number line up on the wall, and "less" meant to the left and "more" meant to the right. That is literally what clicked for her. These visual kids can be a puzzle sometimes, but in the very best way! Also, some stuff literally she had to age into to understand. Like rounding, I recall. Oh, also, if this helps, the < looks like "L" for Less. She also needed that. The > looked like the bottom part of "G" for Greater. But she took a lot longer for that part, the symbolism part.
  6. Also, schools have trends. I went to two different high schools. At the first one, everybody had a locker and all the rooms were relatively close, and everybody carries their book or two in their arms. In the second high school, everybody used backpacks. Lockers were on the first floor of a three story building, and all of the classes were on the third floor. I didn't own a backpack before this school because they weren't a trend, but I borrowed a backpack from my brother once I realized that was what was done. Trends. The life blood of high school. 🙂
  7. If it's BCBS Federal, they have Telehealth services by Teladoc. You can find them through the fepblue.org website. Or they list the Teladoc number, 1-855-636-1579. It looks like Teladoc includes mental health as well as regular health. (I mean they have this in addition to regular in person stuff.)
  8. I like to use cooked ground sausage along with a bag of Cole slaw (no dressing) or just shredded cabbage, throw in some garlic or ginger or soy sauce, and roll up in spring rolls to make a sort of lumpia. Brush with oil and bake. Delightful!
  9. Gently, it sounds like these phone calls are not about communication for her, but a game she can win. You don't have to play her game.
  10. I'm not a doctor but if it were me, I would try diaper rash cream on that (zinc oxide based) and see if it helps.
  11. Maybe in the first few years of our marriage, we did, but we're at 25 years now, and no, we don't. If one of us is being weird and stupid, the other one backs off. If it's not important, it's not important. Plus, I think very highly of my dh, and he thinks very highly of me, and if something is bothering one of us, the other one respects that even if we don't get it. ((big hugs))
  12. Ground beef with rice and peas mixed in. Use beef broth to make the rice. A little minced onion would be nice in there, too.
  13. Milkshakes? My dad is on a similar diet right now, and they asked permission to give him milkshakes (scoop of ice cream, some other nutritional things thrown in). I said Yes!
  14. Bit of tangentially related trivia: It is my understanding that you can get leprosy from armadillos. Don't eat armadillo!
  15. We were at the bank (credit union) every Saturday for a couple months after my mom died. It's a giant pain.
  16. If you end up not being able to take Florastor (the pills are huge), you might look at Olly Extra Strength Probiotic gummies. It contains bacillus coagulans and bacillus subtilis. A close relative took it while on antibiotics for a couple of months. Worked great!
  17. We're not attending a Super Bowl bowl party, but I love reading food threads, especially when I'm hungry. Deviled eggs sound delightful!
  18. The cardinal thread inspired me. What birds are you seeing out your windows lately? I have been seeing egrets (cattle egret I think) just walking around the lawn, and brown pelicans in the water (bay). Plus the usual seagulls. I do miss the forest song birds of my childhood in the midwest. But the Gulf Coast has its charms.
  19. Squee! The pickleball paddles! The swing set! So cute! All of it!
  20. Oh my goodness! Just seeing this! Best wishes! Praying for you and your family.
  21. Thank you for this thread! I did not know about this. I have added organic oats to my grocery order!
  22. Oh, dang, with that new information, I would totally cut that person off. Since I'm not confrontational, I would cancel the conversation and ghost her.
