  1. Thanks for all the feedback! I am going to step away from the phonics right now. We're gonna go through some lists of picture books I have and keep reading the good I can read books. That is what I've been doing for the past 2 months but I guess I just felt like it was time for something else. I do want to say that even though she's 4, I am so glad that I did AAR level 1 with her! Even though it was very easy I feel like it gave her the practice she needed in a controlled way to become as fluent as she is and it was very fun for her! No worksheets, just a fun thing we did together while her siblings took their naps. I'll move forward with picture books and probably read through the stories from AAR level 2 and maybe 3 if I can find someone who has them :-) And then maybe start spelling when we start Kindergarten. Thank you everyone! I really found this so helpful, especially the people who chimed in saying they were early readers.... thank you for helping me focus on what's important.
  2. I love that mensa for kids book list, thank you! Okay so it sounds like I'm going to go the picture book route. I'm dying a little on the inside not teaching phonics but I will manage. Like someone suggested, I can come back around when I start with spelling. Thank you!
  3. I saw you used Singapore early bird for your olders but I'd suggest using Singapore essential math because at the bottom of each page they give a hands on activity and I really love it. It is still very well organized and concept based and you have the WS if you want to do it, but the hands on activity is where it's at! My daughter is 4 so we do the WS but sometimes we just do them with cuisenaire rods and leave them empty or just write in the numbers for writing practice. It has been a great fit for us! Oh, and it's cheap! 🎉
  4. My daughter is 4 (almost 5) and is reading maybe at a 3rd grade level. We used AAR level 1 to make sure we had a strong foundation and the regular practice was great but it was very easy and she flew through it in about 3 months. We've taken 2 months off and I've just had her read out loud to me most days. She's reading 2nd grade books with me but they're not challenging her (Arnold Lobel I can read books, Zach's Alligator, Josefina's Story Quilt). Older grade books don't hold her attention and they're too long and she doesn't really care to read them. I already have AAR level 2 but I just did the placement test and she placed halfway through level 4. Although she has not memorized what all the phonemes say individually, she can sound them all out in words. Do I go through the levels so she memorizes what they say out of context (sounds like a kill joy to me), do I move on to level 3 or 4, or do I do something different all together?

  6. My oldest is 4.5 and then I have almost 3 year old and 6 month old. We probably end up schooling 3 days a week. I gather books from the library off of the "give your child the world" book lists and we do one continent a month. I use 5 in a row in the morning during the baby's nap and when both the littles nap I do phonics and math. I try to set a rule of never interrupting good play time... if the kids are really involved in building or imaginative play, we just push school back or don't do it that day!
  7. I haven't read what everyone else said but I used the workbook in combo with phonics pathways for a little while and I though it worked great. Once my daughter was blending fluently I moved to AAR1 and it was great. I'm glad she had the foundation of initial cv blends rather than word families
  8. I don't know if this what you're looking for, but I use Singapore math "math essentials" with miquon and I really like it. You can do the worksheet or just do the activity at the bottom of each page. I like that it offers a scope and sequence and I like the way its organized. And I like the price!
