  1. OK, I'm only on page 4 of this thread so I have a lot more to read, but thanks so much for posting the UCLA video. It's great. Also, the sugar thing bugs me a great deal, as well as the fact that people seem to assume that if you take your kids to an hour long activity they need a snack. What's up with that? I know in the OP's situation it was a long evening, but as long as we are venting I must say I think it's strange that play groups lasting one hour require some sort of treat intervention.
  2. Maybe to make sure the grated cheese didn't stick together too much? Most pregrated cheeses you buy in the package contain potato starch to keep them from sticking... I have also heard of cornstarch being used as a thickener for soups, etc.
  3. :iagree: And I am not comforted by how this has been handled. We can't find it anywhere, everyone is already sick, but then in other places they are giving the vaccine to adults on their way to work? My daughter is in preschool for special ed reasons, and the public school special ed teacher is upset that the county is spending money to pay for it and I won't let her attend due to H1N1. They seem to be fine with letting all the kids get sick and letting the chips fall where they may, but I am not fine with that. But maybe I am just overreacting... I don't like being pushed. But I certainly have had thoughts like "if this is how they are handling this, then things don't look good for us if we are ever dealing with anything worse..." And I worry that our inefficiency in this situation might be educational for those who do not like America, or society in general. And then I tell myself I'm completely paranoid!
  4. The straight oil has much more omega 3 for your dollar. Or there are super concentrated fish oil pills if you are unable to stomach the straight oil. Just make sure it says it's tested for mercury. Any ideas on hiding the oil in food? My daughter won't take it!
  5. My daughter uses that Bed Head Oatmeal and Honey. I find it's so moisturizing she doesn't need conditioner and still has super shiny, healthy looking, bouncy hair. I used to use California Baby but it seemed to dry her hair out even when I got her to use conditioner.
  6. I think that more of the homeschool activities have the "no colds" policy so that those children who are unable to attend public schools b/c of immune issues might still be able to enjoy some activities. I thought the homeschool community was stricter out of compassion for our immune compromised children- and there are MANY of those in the homeschool community who would be completely unable to attend public schools. This is their only haven. I've always understood that it is a terrible thing to bring even a slightly sick child to a homeschool activity, and would earn me a quick badge of "don't play with her kid." Also, homeschool families are such a closed system of education. If one kid gets sick, so does the other, and the mom, and then you have an entire "class" shut down with no "substitute teacher" for the ones who are left well. It disrupts the entire flow of learning. It's just different than the public schools and comparing the illness policy of each system is like comparing apples to oranges...
  7. They said kids under 9 need two doses to be FULLY protected. BUT, after you get the first dose are you "somewhat" protected? Enough to go back to preschool, LOL? My daughter has it at her preschool. We pulled her out but there's a vaccine clinic this week. I'm wondering if she would be "good enough" to go back after one dose... I've looked all over the internet for this info, but haven't seen it noted anywhere...
  8. If anyone in your family is at risk and needs the shot, you ALL have to get the shot. After you've gotten the mist you can infect those around you for 3 days. Our Pediatrician told us we ALL have to have the shot versus the mist because if any of us got the mist we could infect our daughter who has too many allergies to go through the virus safely.
  9. Is there any way you could get him evaluated? Sometimes kids seem like they are uninterested when in fact they are covering up for a learning disorder... And not every issue with concentration is ADD. My daughter has an issue with processing speed that can make her seem like she is not listening or interested in work at times, but there were ways to increase her speed without meds.
  10. I might try the Peterson Directed Handwriting. They have a cursive for kindergarteners that looks much easier to understand than the clock face used in Cursive First. Maybe she wants manuscript because the clock face method is too hard.
  11. I read that cursive is better too, I even purchased the Cursive First curriculum, but my daughter wants nothing to do with it. She is not quite five yet, and she wants to learn to write, but she wants to learn manuscript. I am wondering if it is worth the effort of pushing it on her. She's pretty stubborn so I am wondering if I should use my "push" chips here or on something more important, KWIM?
  12. How many of you think it's important to teach cursive before manuscript for kindergarteners? Theoretically, I would like to teach cursive first, but my daughter would rather learn manuscript. Should I push it or just teach her what she wants?
  13. I asked my husband, who is an engineer for a power company, as a conversation starter. He said geothermal is also somewhat dependent on the sun because if we weren't in the sun's proximity than earth would be frozen all the way through the core. With nuclear he cannot see a clear connection.
  14. I didn't mention calling the health dept and I wouldn't call the health dept. I think they are handling the situation up to code, I just think they are all going to get sick and I wonder if we should stand in line to get sick too. I think it's silly that they are not going to try to do any extra sanitizing, but that's not against any health codes. They still do the regular cleaning routine and that is, per code, just fine. I just wonder if, as Treehouse said, I should exercise my right to keep my daughter home until she can be vaccinated. So I thought I'd get on here and everyone would tell me I'm crazy and take that child to preschool, LOL. But when I read the thread about what it feels like to have this virus, I don't think I want her to get it even without any possible complications. Sounds pretty miserable, to say the least! My husband read the symptoms on the H1N1 thread and he said to just keep her home until she's vaccinated (hopefully next week). He does not like having a sick child any more than I do... So we might be the "crazy, paranoid" ones at the school, but at least we won't be the sick ones!:D So I just dread making that phone call this morning to tell them she won't be back until she's vaccinated! I'm sure I'll get an earful! But you gotta do what you gotta do I guess...
  15. My daughter has a mild egg allergy and has done fine with flu shots in the past, but she has to get them in the doctors office just in case. I don't think the mist has egg???? I think if your child is highly allergic it is a big risk. Will your doctor even let you get it? What has his reaction been to vaccines in the past? Many are made in egg.
  16. :iagree:Their housewares section seems to be overpriced. The only people I know who buy from there want to be able to take the item back if they don't like it. They have a good return policy.
  17. Are you sure that's your mom? I think it might have been mine.
  18. Oh my goodness. That is terrible. I am so sorry to hear that.
  19. Well, they are doing the responsible thing in alerting the parents that students have come down with it. I wouldn't have known it was there if they did not alert us, and ultimately they said to ask your doctor whether your child should attend. They said that students are not to come until they are fever free for 24 hours. But the director said they are not taking any unusual measures to erradicate the virus (AKA, we are not doing any extra cleaning). I spoke to her before I pulled Grace out, and she seemed to have the feeling like "we can't put our kids in a bubble" etc, etc. I think I just get extra paranoid because my thoughts always fly to "but she's our only child. we can't have more." Which makes no sense... As if the parents with four are like "oh well, we've got three more left." I'm sure each of their children are just as precious to them as my only one is to me.
  20. My sister works there. They have great deals and sales all the time. I buy all my daughter's clothes there because the clothes are better quality than target but cost the same or less. They have good buyers for their clothes, their in house brands are good quality, and they tend to buy too much for it to fit in the store and then reduce prices to move it out. I don't think the prices on their housewares are as good as the prices for clothes. I think their vacuums are more expensive than other places, but I may be wrong. I don't have a Kohls card or use my sister's discount, but I find there is always a good deal there anyway.
  21. burt's bees has a baby gift pack around ten dollars... usually in the shampoo aisle at target.
  22. I am unable to think about this rationally right now. Swine flu is in the 3's class, which is right next to my daughter's class. It's spread over the public schools like wildfire and people are basically saying to just let your kid get it and move on. The preschool director says "more children die from car accidents than illness" etc (but I have never heard someone say "just run that red light and get it over with"). So one kid got it in the 3's class, but there's a bunch of stuff going around. The teacher was coughing and sneezing into her elbow when I picked Grace up. The school said no one else had pulled out their child due to fear of the illness. I can see the thought process here, although I think they might have been fibbing because I saw 2 parents walking back to their cars with their child when I dropped Grace off. But I really don't want my daughter to get sick. It sounds like this is a miserable illness to have even without complications. So, on the one side, I wouldn't let Grace go to school if there were measles if she hadn't been vaccinated. So how is this different? On the other, she really gets a lot out of this and pulling her out until she is vaccinated means at least two weeks out- and it may not be that bad of an illness. Am I being irrational? Has anyone has this and is it that terrible? Grace doesn't do well with fevers. She dehydrates rapidly and refuses to take fluids or eat. I don't want to be an overprotective mom here- someone talk me down from the ledge, LOL! Am I just being overprotective?
  23. No, they are not worth the money. They have great ones that are similar and work as well. I have a Kitchenaid and I can tell you it about bumps across the counter every time I do bread dough. And the motor makes a "I'm about to die" sound. We got it last summer and I rarely use it b/c I'm scared it will break.
  24. They are vaccinating all the kids at my daughter's preschool in two weeks. However, the school already has the virus so I am wondering if the vaccine will be too late. I just read all your posts about H1N1 and now I am worried. I don't want to be paranoid but I really am worried.
  25. I flipped through the new version at the bookstore to see if it was referenced and I couldn't find anything more than the listing in the company section, but maybe I was just going too fast. I have the old version and I'll check it tonight to see if it says anything. I don't remember her going into too much detail. I do remember she used to have a review of the old sonlight that said it did fit the classical philosophy if you rearranged the history.
