  1. C'mon Bill. Get it together. ;) I'm from midwest, supposedly we have the least accented accent in the states. We still have an accent though, everyone does.
  2. I'm so jealous. We used to float. Some of the best times of my life. Have a great time!!
  3. My son does the same thing yours does, Carrie. He'll just pipe right up with an "I'm homeschooled." Most of the time, it kills the conversation right there, people don't seem to know how to respond to that. Every once in a while we get a positive response.
  4. I had the EXACT same score. But I already knew I was a big flaming Liberal. :D The problem I have with libertarianism and its support of a totally free market with no government control, is that the market is about money and people tend to get trampled in that market unless they already have money. I put people before money, so I want some rules and regulations and safeguards and watchdogs making sure that the big guys don't run over and railroad the little guys. If it could be different, if the big guys could be trusted to hold themselves accountable, I'd be a libertarian. But they can't, so I want protection for the people.
  5. See, I have the opposite rant. :D Mine would be about people assuming that meds are a weak way out of it. That one could change their brain chemistry if one just tried hard enough. Implying that one ISN'T trying. I get upset when people refuse to take their meds because they say they don't want to depend on a pill for their happiness. Yeah, sucks to do that, but its better then the alternative. So buck up. I get angry when people suggest that a person with Major Depressive Disorder or Bipolar Disorder should change their eating habits, their lifestyle or whatever the flavor of the month is, and then all will be well. For many people, without the meds, they can't even get to a point where it would even be possible to make helpful changes. Its common to feel the effects of an AD within the first several days, whatever the Info Sheet about the drug tells you. Its also common to try many drugs and dosages before one finds something that works. Also, you may be mis-diagnosed. So very common. A lot of things look like depression, and it takes a good psychiatrist to untangle it. Also, the fact that all the meds stop working after 6 weeks, is sort of indicative that maybe one is being treated for the wrong thing?? And even if the dx is right, there are different types of ADs that work on different neurotransmitter, maybe the wrong neurotransmitter has been targeted? I dunno, this is just stuff I've gleaned in my quest to calm my own brain cooties. Probably helps no one. I also don't think that people who are situationally depressed should be medically treated the same way that a person with MDD or BD should be treated. Situational depression is NOT a chemical/neurotransmitter problem and shouldn't be treated as such. Sometimes, also, depression is a side effect in and of itself. Someone mentioned anemia, another cause might be a thryoid problem. I'm not saying everyone needs to be on drugs, don't take me that way! But I am saying that, boyhowdy some of us need those drugs, there is a real biophysical cause that meds - and only meds - can alleviate. And it doesn't mean we don't have to make other changes as well. So thats my rant. No more or less valid then yours Ethel. :001_smile: I hope you find something, anything, that helps.
  6. That is *so* awesome. Your DH sounds like a great, caring guy. Good for you guys!
  7. Jamie Fraser is the PERFECT man! I first came across Outlander as an audiobook a long time ago, and all I remember about it from that time was that I was ready to throw the d*mn thing out the door if I heard the word Sasenach one more Scottish time. :tongue_smilie: But, then I came across it again, in book form and loved it. Dragonfly in Amber was the hardest one for me, I literally bawled my way through it. The tears really never stopped. The whole series just had quite an emotional effect on me. Beautiful story. The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver may be something you like. Its the only book I've read by her, but it was really good. Well nice to meet another Outlander fan!
  8. My kids often come across a word or phrase that sets them into giggles, and they'll keep repeating it and cracking each other up. Its usually something innocuous. My DD is especially good at just repeating and repeating a noise or word simply for the sake of hearing herself. Also, around here, if you say "guess what?", its immediately followed by a chorus of "chicken butt".
  9. I think you get better prices in the summer. You can still sell now, you just might not make quite as much as you might otherwise. If that matters.
  10. Hey we're doing SOTW2 along with History Odyssey, and we're using REAL Science Earth and Space. So, yes we're at the same place in the rotation. My blog is in my sig too, I try to update once a week, but sometimes I don't quite make it.
  11. This is where I am too. After a long time of mis-diagnosis and wrong meds and off and on treatment, I think I am for once at a decent place to go into the winter months. I have a good pdoc, I'm doing good on new meds, have gotten pretty good at ID'ing my moods (am bipolar), and I'm still feeling pretty good, the fact that the windows are open again makes all the difference to me. It won't last, like someone else said, February is my bad month, when it gets really bad. Heather, anyone, if you want to PM me, I'm another one who's ready to be an ear, BTDT too. We can just have a little winter support group for anyone who needs it. :grouphug:
  12. What is so unbelievable? He's basically saying that you can call something anything you like, but it is what it is. Its not directed at any one person. Its directed at policy. I see no reason for uproar, tho when I first got to that site I was ready to be disappointed in my candidate. Thankfully, nothing has changed.
  13. My kids are way too young, we haven't really gotten into politics yet. But my hope for them is that we can discuss the issues, discuss the politicians, etc in an open way. I will tell them my views, but they already know now that there are many many ways to do life and many many choices to make so I will not be telling them what to think. By the time they are of age to talk politics, they will know its ok to disagree with me. They can also discuss the issues with any of my relatives who have opposite views, in fact that sounds like a good idea. I agree, I want my kids to think for themselves. Period.
  14. Can you give a source that says NBC profits are down? I can only find info from Jan 2008 in which it said they were up 10%. Can you give a more recent link? Thanks.
  15. I don't think the niche for left-leaning commentary is as extremely small as you may wish it to be. *whispers back to Mrs Mungo* I know, I actually knew this one was coming. Hope you make it to the inauguration!
  16. Thank you for clearing this up. I'm glad the two will be very much front and center during the election process and that "...reports by other news organizations had mischaracterized the decision as a demotion of the network’s two highest-rated stars." I don't watch Matthews much, but I enjoy Olberman when I stumble across him at night. Thanks for sharing elizabeth.
  17. I have just about every symptom/sign listed above as well. I was dx'ed by one pdoc with Inattentive ADD. My current pdoc says I don't have it. I remain unconvinced, so next appt I'm presenting my case again. I don't if I want to take meds for it or not, I never have even tho last pdoc offered. There's a lot of overlap between dysthymia, Major Depressive Disorder, and ADD. It can be hard to disentangle what's what. There is research that suggests it all goes back to the same basic neuro-transmitter problem.
  18. You should share some of those links, I'd love to hear what other countries are reading. Sounds interesting. I wish either of our NPR stations had a Science Friday. Thats the news I'm most interested in. Well, when there's not an election like this anyway. :D
  19. We have a tadpole, we got him back in March. He was supposed to begin metamorphosing within 6 weeks. He is still a tadpole. No legs, no where. I have *no idea* why. Maybe he needs some environmental cues he is not getting.
  20. Not laughing at even the most terrible things, somehow makes it more terrible. I'm also bipolar, possibly a couple co-morbids thrown in there too. I thought it was a hilarious. When you can laugh at something like this, it shows it hasn't beaten you.
  21. This was when my oldest was not quite one. At the time I didn't have a washer and dryer, so I went over to my mom's once a week to do laundry. I always had the stereo on in my son's room, and that morning I woke up and went to get him out of his crib and on the stereo they were talking about a plane crashing into a buiding. For some reason, I pictured a light aircraft going into the Sears tower. We get in the car and head on over to my mom's and for some reason I didn't turn the radio on. This is pretty much of unheard of for me, to be in the car without music. I think that possibly I managed to glean some more info from the radio news then I was aware of, and just wasn't ready to deal with it. Maybe. So we get to my mom's, the door's open and no one is there but the tv is on CNN. And there I get the full-force effect. My first thought was something along the lines of Who in the WORLD had the balls to bomb us?? Seriously, that was my first thought. Sorry if it offended anyone. And it was like a bombing, it took me awhile to stop calling it that. I had another thought, followed a bit later, that I bet Al Gore was thanking his lucky stars he hadn't gotten that election afterall. At least for one passing moment. So I sat there and watched the rest of the day. Actually for days, weeks afterwards CNN was on constantly. Some of the things that I heard about, the ones that actually turned out to be true, were truly awful. Can you imagine being near the top floors of these towers, with the inferno burning behind you, and only an open window ahead of you? What would you do?? I can't fathom that, I can't wrap my head around the choice that would have to be made. It's a life-defining moment. Every knows where they were when it happened. Just like, in the past, everyone knew where they were when Kennedy got shot, or other historical moments. But eventually 9-11 will be forgotten, it will pass into history and the people who experienced it - in any degree - will be gone, and there will be another life defining moment for the next generation.
  22. So if you lived in Alaska and then Alaska seceded, you would put the US before Alaska? You are now in Alaska, maybe even the governor of the state, its a whole new country. Loyalty to the US would probably be frowned upon. Do you now see the contradiction?
  23. Now thats pretty rude, no matter what. Have you read the rules? Ad hominen attacks are not allowed. And from what I understand, this is not your first. I would suggest you tread lightly.
  24. Now thats your ranking. And if Alaska seceded, it wouldn't be a state anymore. OK? It would be another country. So where in that ranking do you put another country, that is not the US?
