  1. I'm late to the party but maybe you'll see this. My son is finishing his freshman year at St. John's in Annapolis. He is VERY conservative and not a party person at all. He has loved his first year there. I suspect he is something of an oddity given his conservative views but he has made friends (and some enemies) and he is enjoying the experience. I will say he is someone who doesn't back down from an argument and I know there have been a few clashes with some classmates. I think his tutors enjoy having the opposing opinions of my son and the other conservative students as it adds to the discussions. My son is not a religious person but several of his friends there are. Among his inner circle are a Mormon, a communist, a fascist and a number of others that fall across the spectrum of beliefs. Though they all love a good argument they also manage to get along with each other. If you would like, I could give you my son's contact info. He would be happy to talk with you and answer any questions.
  2. I know this post is a bit old, but I have a freshman at St. John's. If you have any specific questions I'm sure he would be happy to answer them.
  3. Thanks so much, both of you. I experienced an internet disaster and couldn't get back on to see your answers. I think I will give both of your suggestions a try and see what works.
  4. My 15 year old is in his second year of Latin using Wheelocks with the Lukion project. He loves it and is doing very well. He wants to add French and right now I can't afford another online class. I printed off the first chapter of Breaking the Barrier and he isn't really liking it. He wants something more like Wheelocks which I guess means more of a traditional textbook approach. I am not sure that is the best way to learn a spoken language but I'm not going to fight him over what he likes. Any suggestions for me to check out?
  5. So sad to hear this. He was a favorite here and will be missed.
  6. If you like shrimp this is VERY easy and looks fabulous dished up. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/4-minute-spicy-garlic-shrimp-recipe/index.html I serve it over steamed broccoli because we are low carb but it would be great over rice as well.
  7. I need to join you all as much as I dread it. I need motivation and a plan!
  8. It has been a couple of years since our last Disney trip but a few tips I have picked up here and there and used: -we always bring ponchos from the dollar store including an extra 1 or 2 to cover the stroller with -we always rent a stroller. It holds our stuff as well as tired kiddos. -we bring a small chamois-like towel for drying people and the stroller after a wet ride or rain shower -the kids always check Tom Sawyers Island for the paint brushes. We have found them a few times even late in the afternoon -I made my kiddos cute autograph books out of small photo albums. I took the photo sleeves out of them and replaced them with card stock. After we get home I put the photo album sleeves in between each piece of card stock so the photo of kiddo with that character is next to the autograph. -I pick up goodies from the Disney Store (B&M or online) throughout the year, mostly clearance items. I pack them along with a little bottle of gold glitter and use them as "Tinkerbell Gifts." I either plant them at night or as we are leaving the room, sprinkle a little glitter around, and make some magic! Even though the bigger ones knew it was me they still loved it and it cuts down on the souvenir want. -ask to ride in the front of the monorail. my kids loved it and they get a little pin if I remember right. -I buy each kiddo a Disney gift card before we leave home and they can use it for souvenirs. They know in advance how much they have to spend and there is less drama. -we always wear Crocs in the park. People either love them or hate them. I'm a lover, no blisters and no wet shoes, yea! -If you are leaving the Magic Kingdom at closing after the fireworks you can stop and have your picture taken with the people holding the "See Ya Real Soon!" signs. It is one of my favorite pictures from our last trip. HTH
  9. I haven't used any but am looking at Biology for the coming year. If you go to ck12.org they are always free and you can customize the flexbooks for your exact needs.
  10. A few days before my 6th birthday. I am sure we watched it on our little B&W TV but I really don't remember it. I do remember the picture on the front page of the newspaper.
  11. I tend to be a direct path person myself so I get what you mean. I am not a "mathy" person myself. My own math education was lacking and it doesn't come naturally to me. One beauty of using the books for me was that I got to brush up on math as I taught it. I know myself well enough to know that if we had used the CD's or online program I would not have participated as actively as I needed to. The books are so inexpensive that I would suggest them as a reference if nothing else. Prof B's explanations of division, place value, fractions and percents, to name a few off the top of my head, are worth the price.
  12. I have used Prof B for years. It has been our primary math program since the beginning. My oldest 2 are now in the 2nd Algebra book. My youngest is finishing up the Level 3 math book and will be ready for the 1st algebra book next term. Because we began using it so long ago, we have never used the CD's or online version. It does have a little narrower scope than some texts (no telling time or counting money, at least in the books) and some thing are taught later than they may be in a more traditional text. I can tell you that it has been the only program in all our years of homeschooling that I have never considered changing. It has produced excellent results with 3 very different students. I find it easy to teach and quite painless for everyone. Even when I read a lesson and think, "they are never going to get this" I am always proven wrong. The man was a genius at presenting concept in a way children get. There are a couple of other longtime users on the board. Maybe they will have more info on the cd's.
  13. Just a bump for the weekend crowd. I know several of you were waiting for this to come out and I don't want you to miss it.
  14. I received an email from Robert at the Home Scientist with links to purchase his Biology lab guide and the kit to go with it. I'll paste a portion of the email below. Here's the landing page for the biology book on our site. http://www.thehomescientist.com/biology.html We're just finishing up the first batch of biology kits, and will begin shipping them in the next two weeks. If you want to order a kit (and your shipping address is in the US), you can do so here: http://www.thehomescientist.com/kits/BK01/bk01-main.html (This page isn't public yet, so please ignore the part about same-day shipping. The first batch of kits will actually start shipping on April 18th.) He is also kindly offering the lab guide as a free download to anyone interested. You can email him at thompson@thehomescientist.com to get a link for the download. I know several of you were waiting for looking forward to using his guide next year. I have briefly looked through it and it looks fantastic.
  15. I am essentially on the Ideal Protein diet but I am now using alternative products to keep the costs down. I have only been on it 2 1/2 weeks but am having great results. I will post more tomorrow as I should be in bed already.
  16. I am currently doing Ideal Protein which is very similar in concept to Medifast. I have lost 13 pounds in 2 1/2 weeks. It is a perfect diet for me because it removes the need to deal with food all day. When you have an issue with food, having to think about what you should eat all day is hard. I think you will be very pleased. There is a forum for medifast users on 3FatChicks.com. You should check it out.
  17. This is my favorite sloppy joe recipe. It taste great and no one has ever guessed that there is cabbage in it. Not even my super picky kid who thinks cabbage is the devil. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/cabbage-sloppy-joes/detail.aspx
  18. My son is in the 11:30 Lukeion 1b class and he thinks he did well. Isn't funny, I think I worried about it more than he did. My exact thought was, "I hope he doesn't bring down the average." Speaks (not very flattering) volumes about my issues!!
  19. This is the best clam chowder I have ever eaten. It won the Newport RI clam chowder competition some years ago. Everyone I have fed it to has asked for the recipe. No bacon or celery. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/newport-clam-chowder/
  20. We have Buff Orpingtons- nice but not friendly. Good layers. Black Australorps- Very friendly, a couple love to be held. Good layers. Barred Rocks- a lot of personality. Cuckoo Marans- very skittish. Broody almost constantly, they seem to take turns one after another. Beautiful chocolate brown eggs when they do lay. We are in NY and they do fine in the winter.
  21. Been there, done that. Sometimes I look back with a little longing but we are happy.
  22. I must be twisted because I find them hysterical. The one about throwing some meat in the crock pot had me laughing out loud. They are written by homeschoolers in imitation of the "Hey Girl" Ryan Gosling meme. That original meme has spawned several other Ryan Gosling memes, the homeschool one being the latest.
