  1. We watched these in addition to our regular stuff. They were slow here and there, but overall I thought they were great. Lots of source material read aloud by actors (Marvin Freeman, etc), interesting tidbits. Verrry long, but very good. I would think watching on DVD would be the best way to make history more enjoyable. Better than reading an old textbook, anyway. What more can one mom do? :) They do offer a civil war ball in Parker, CO, every year for the local homeschoolers. I think they may do some battle reenactments, too. Maybe something like that would be worth looking into.
  2. My ds is doing both this year, as a junior. He *is* very science oriented, but he's not finding the pace of the material too difficult. You know, you could always begin this way and see how it goes. If it gets to be too much, slow it up. Is there a reason he must have a certain amount of physics? Because at the end of the year you could just call it good, regardless of whether he completely finished the second book. I'd encourage you to try it. What do you have to lose? At the most, he spends a few extra weeks finishing up physics over the summer or in the fall. JMHO!!
  3. OT--I just luuuuv Granny Clampett and the quote about the possum. And I come from a place where they eat it. "Fingerlickingood!" :D
  4. Good for you! It seems like I've heard this about Georgia schools across the board. When more people vote with their money, maybe things will change. I wonder what other "peer institutions" they looked at before modifying their policies? Not that I'm widely experienced, but the schools we've looked at haven't required anything extra (and that would include MIT...but maybe they aren't a "peer" of Ga Tech?) :D
  5. MN as well. There are a few others out there that haven't checked in.
  6. I have this problem myself and did not like taking Prozac, etc., to control it. I read a book called Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition by Marilyn Shannon (also of Apologia Advanced Biology fame) and decided to try some of the supplements she mentioned there. I was *very* skeptical, because I am not an organic, vegetarian, whole foods type of person at all and I wondered how much help this might be--you know, like some "vegameatavitamin". :D Well, it worked. I saw a very noticable improvement in my moods. She recommends a multivitamin called Optivite (much higher doses of vitamins, but still within safe limits), which can usually be special ordered through your pharmacy. In addition, there are specific nutrients that I supplemented (Mg, B6, Zinc, E, calcium, folic acid and flax oil). Of course I am an adult, having babies/nursing babies so my needs are different, but you might try the multi-vit and read the book for specific needs. If you can't find it to borrow you may try contacting a local teaching couple for the Couple to Couple League (Natural Family Planning) www.ccli.org . Scroll to the bottom and click "Find a teaching couple". They may be able to loan you a book. Otherwise you can purchase a copy. Or you may be able to find a similar resource in the library. Good luck; I know we'll be trying this with my dd as she gets older.
  7. Egad. I think I may have used bad grammar when addressing The Overmind. Does this mean I'm back to visitor?
  8. I suddenly have an intense desire to watch "The Secret Life of Bees". BTW, I don't like the idea that people become Queens (or whatever follows that!) just by posting 47 million times. I wish there were some way to recognize the real queens on the board who post infrequently but with great wisdom and insight. I know we can give reputation, but if someone posts once every couple of months and every person who reads that particular thread gives her some rep, she still won't have much. Maybe the "powers that be" (that would be you, right?) can accept nominations for some other underlord-type bees that the board members value highly? Don't think I'm a whiner! I love that you provide this for us. I just wish the right people would get acknowledgement. Maybe I just need to work within the system and be content.
  9. Guess I'm just agreeing with Kathleen. I consulted with ds about this. This year he's doing Apologia physics at an accelerated rate (1 module/wk) plus Saxon Advanced Math. He said he doesn't feel like it's too much, not like doing two math classes or anything. He also said that if your ds is doing calc the physics math will all be easy for him, or if not easy, at least review of things he's done before. I've heard Saxon physics is more "mathy" (From Cathy Duffy?)
  10. Throw them away?!?!?!? Heck no. I ate them. :o And where did you get that cute little animated eating smiley? Perfect!
  11. Thank you for this idea! I sucked support from the board yesterday, so it makes perfect sense. After the birth of my sixth child, and approaching age 39, even nursing has not taken off the pounds like before. So I'm trying to get from pregnancy weight to pre-preggo weight eating lo-carb. Except for yesterday. I'm 147 (as of this morning, a pound less than before my cookie craze!) and want get to 125. That's my "feel good/clothes fit" weight. This is the most I've ever been overweight, and it seems like such a mountain to lose! But a little encouragement for me, and maybe for those who've be overweight for a long time: I have an aunt (60ish) who has always been pretty big. In the last year or two she's lost 150 pounds and is like a size 14 or something. I'm so proud of her! After a lifetime of heaviness, and now at an older age, she has done this! So we can do it too.
  12. Sorry, but I thought that was a picture of Jennifer Love Hewitt! I actually thought it was clever that Jennifer found a beautiful celbrity Jennifer to represent her as a "stand in".
  13. In the interest of full disclosure, those who supported me yesterday need to know that I did *not* valiantly plug my ears against the siren call of the cookies in my freezer. I tried. I failed. But the good news is that my freezer is now clear of cookies! :D And last night I had a big ol' burger with two slices of bread, and Miracle Whip (how I missed you, dear Miracle Whip!) And it felt gooooood. Today, I'm starting again on the narrow path. I'm optimistic. And I'm looking into that accountability group, too, LOL. Thanks again for your words yesterday. They didn't save me, but they did make me feel better. That's worth a lot!
  14. Thanks you guys. I like Peek's advice, one cookie a week. Although if I get desperate, don't be surprised if one of you finds a package of cookies arriving on your doorstep. It may be a bit mauled, and some cookies may have traces of drool on them, but do not be alarmed. In the mean time, I will perservere. What's the A.A. saying? One day at a time....
  15. And I've just gotta say how funny that all of us are "just visiting". I bet the regulars on the high school board will be the last ones of all to make it to the various stages--larva, worker bee, etc. I mentioned this in another post, but some people on this board should just be elevated straight to Queen regardless of number of posts! Doesn't actual wisdom count for something?!?
  16. We've been hs'ing for seven years, just doing things that work for us. I do love TWTM, and find lots of inspiration there. My oldest is a junior with a serious science bent and high hopes for MIT engineering or physics--and yes, Apologia has served him well! I also have a challenging 8th grader, a highly emotional 5th grader, a cute little 2nd grader, a four-year-old and a 5 month old baby. Yowsa! I, too, love these boards and can always find great advice and answers, comfort, congratulations, encouragement, you name it. We live in a rural area and are the only homeschoolers; well, there are a couple of others but nobody associates and there is no support group. So this is my place to turn! Thank you to SWB for sponsoring our forums! One thing I love about these new boards: the ability to see some of your pictures and get to know a little more about each person in the profiles.
  17. p.s. Thank you for listening. I feel much better already.
  18. After eating carb free for a whole 7 days I broke down and had a cookie. So sue me! What is life for if you can't enjoy a cookie?!? And now I'm seriously considering binging on the rest of the cookies that I have waiting in my freezer. Aaaaarrrrghhh! Somebody help me! Tell me it's worth it to have self control.........I feel like I'm faaaallllinnnngg......:o
  19. Maybe I like this new board format after all. I haven't been on the general board because I don't have time to stay with it--moves too fast! But now I can look through the new posts and see quickly what's there. And find things like this cookie.... Thanks!
  20. Ha, probably something like "drone"! Not exactly flattering. But I think it's too bad that some respected posters post only infrequently (i.e. Tina in Ouray) and really should be given Queen Bee status based on their wisdom rather than their number of posts. Can we choose our queens? ;)
  21. No, but you can change a few things in the settings to make it a little better. For instance, I clicked on your message and can see the first little bit of each of the posts underneath it. That's an improvement for me...but I agree. I'm thankful for the boards, but it will certainly take getting used to these new ones.
