  1. My son will be a freshman at U of Akron next year in the Honors dorm. The housing questionnaire had stuff about neatness/messiness and early/late riser, but nothing about faith. I prayed for him to get a Christian roommate anyway. They emailed roommate info yesterday, and the boy called him last night. In the course of the conversation, my son mentioned some church stuff he will be doing next week, and the roommate asked about his church and his faith, then said, "Praise God! That's an answer to prayer. I'd been praying for a Christian roommate." God is so good. Debbie
  2. I guess I didn't do as well as some here -- I saved a little over $200, but without you guys we might have just ended up going with the college bookstore... $$$ Debbie
  3. Also still waiting in Ohio... the records from last year showed July 12 as the receipt date, so I'm trying not to get my hopes too high for today's mail! Snowbelt, you must not be too far from me... Debbie
  4. I remember reading here that you don't even have to use nice paper. So I just used regular printer paper and I know I folded mine and no one seemed to have a problem with it. As to the Fs on the scale: it probably would not matter. Note: We weren't going for Ivies, however. If these are extremely selective schools, hopefully someone else will chime in. They could have different requirements or expectations.
  5. You might try emailing the admissions counselor assigned to your area? Some places waive app fees for online apps, but that's usually pretty clear on the website if it's the case. Blessings, Debbie
  6. It's north of Boston -- a bit of a drive, but if you go all the way to the end of the island/peninsula, there's a wonderful beach with a tide pool area that is amazingly full of cool things. We found huge clam shells -- unbroken, many other unique and interesting shells, occasionally sand dollars and starfish, even. Also, there are areas where the sand is a maroonish purple color. (Okay, we moved 8 years ago, so this might be somewhat out of date... I'd see if you can find recent info online, since a lot can change in 8 years!) Less of a drive (but maybe you saw one or both as part of the more typical 'touristy' places) are Walden Pond and Concord. We used to live about 10 minutes from each. Have fun -- Boston is firmly in the 'GREAT place to visit, but I'm glad I don't live there anymore' category in my heart! Debbie
  7. Does anyone here know how to do that Chemistry demonstration where you have (or make) a black liquid, then add red, ending up with clear? Thanks, Debbie (visiting from the high school board)
  8. I guess I'll just put it out of my mind for a couple of weeks, then.
  9. Also waiting for the mail; does anyone have any idea how much of a wait that might be?????
  10. Wow! Thanks for the list. Only some of that info will it hurt us to not know in advance... BTW, I lived in the Waltham/Belmont area for many years... what part of Mass are you in?
  11. Thanks, Lynn. I'm more likely to pay to move in a day late! Kidding, but I'm worried that we'll return from our trip on Tuesday night, and they'll want him to move in Thursday morning... I guess we'll be shopping instead of doing laundry after two weeks of driving around the country!
  12. Thanks for the input, Chris. We should be able to access the internet off and on while we're gone. I may also have my sister-in-law pick up our mail and give us at least some of the info over the phone... timing is unfortunate. Thanks again; I guess we'll just figure out some way to make it work. Debbie
  13. We found this route to be very helpful for merit scholarships also -- see concurrent thread on college debt.:scared:
  14. You may get better responses from others, but here's my take: On the transcript, ours say 'OFFICIAL HOMESCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT' at the top, both the ones we sent initially as well as the final one sent to the school which he is attending. You may find that each college you apply to has a slightly different package. Somewhere on their admissions sites, most schools nowadays seem to have a section detailing their requirements for homeschooled applicants. Not all even wanted course descriptions, as I recall. Sounds like you're doing very well and ahead of the game so far!
  15. I was reading a recent issue of World Magazine (a Christian news magazine, for those unfamiliar) and several stories were dealing with the current state of dating/relationships for young people. To summarize part of it: There are often more women than men on campus, and, "when women compete for men, men win: the price of s*x goes down." Here is the conclusion of the article: A tightly held faith in God makes a difference. The authors found that those most likely not to be having sex are "more religious, especially in terms of how central it is to their identity." Apart from belief that they are called to marriage and fatherhood, men are unlikely to marry in their 20s, or perhaps at all: "Their decision to delay makes sense from a sexual economics perspective: they can access sex relatively easily outside of marriage, they can obtain many of the perceived benefits of marriage by cohabiting rather than marrying, they encounter few social pressures from peers to marry. . . ." The effect on women is even greater: "The losers in this discounted sexual marketplace are clearly women . . . who want to remain virgins until marriage (and yet, who wish to get married). They are increasingly put in a bind in their pursuit of a lifelong relationship, constrained by how the sexual decisions of their peers alter market expectations about the price of sex. Many feel pressure to 'take what they can get' and commence a sexual relationship with a marriage-minded man before marriage, or risk the real possibility that in holding out for a chaste man to marry they will wait a lot longer than they would like to, watching the pool of available, ideal men shrink before their eyes." Or, have faith that God will provide. Do I expect my daughter to engage in immorality? No. Would I rather her be on a campus where (hopefully) the majority of guys are aiming for a God-honoring marriage rather than just a good time? ABSOLUTELY! Many blessings to you!
  16. I used it with my son -- it was a great fit and within a couple of months I saw real improvement in his writing. For my daughter, it was a flop. I think it works well for kids who are not naturally good writers, and not for kids who write well already. I also think it works best for students with an... 'orderly' personality -- those who don't mind repetition and perhaps the kind of kid who likes 'checklist' sort of work.... not too sure about this part, though. HTH Debbie
  17. I've searched the boards and it seems that sometimes 'Personal Finance' is put on a student's transcript. I want to do a course like that with my rising senior, but I am wondering if it's the sort of course that only homeschoolers put on transcripts, thus not resonating with college admissions types, or if it's a reasonably common/standard course designation... Anyone have any knowledge about this?
  18. ... as one whose wish for a (somewhat) classical/rigorous education had to bow to the reality of who my children are: 1) I agree with you entirely. 2) I don't actually think there are any other comparable *high school* level discussion boards. An attempt was made to start one a few years back, but I believe it fizzled. 3) I actually 'self-censor' my comments based on a awareness of the issue. 4) However, due to my personal experience, I can get a little huffy/defensive at what I sometimes perceive as an arrogant, condescending tone toward those who may be just doing the best they can with what they have. (Note: I didn't sense any of that in the OP or follow-ups so far, but frankly, I'm expecting it to appear! ;)) 5) Finally, I've wondered if we should consider labeling our posts classical or non-classical because there is such a diversity on the board. 6) Ooops! Thought of one more point... I, at least, am very aware that I am not the target audience of this board, but let me tell you that I have been tremendously blessed by being here (specifically the high school level); my children's education and my sanity has been very positively impacted by all the help and advice I have gleaned/received. Many thanks to the 'classicals' among you for sharing your wonderful resource! Debbie
  19. You should be very pleased with your scores! I can tell from your other posts that you've worked hard for them.
  20. This is my second year in a row, but also my last year... I'm still trying to figure out all the ins and outs of making sure everything works out for my oldest starting at the Univ. this fall. At the same time, I'm starting the whole process over again with my daughter. I'm also shaking my head in amazement that this is the final year of homeschooling after 13 years of it consuming, and at times almost defining me. Ladies... start your engines (sputter, cough, choke...) :auto:
  21. I've discovered that the University of Akron is not going to send out 'housing information' to freshmen until the first week of August. I'm not even sure what that includes other than roommate information -- and perhaps if you got into the dorm at all, but we got our paperwork in so early I'm not too concerned. My problem is that we're leaving town on August 3 and not returning until less than a week before classes start... I know 'move in day' will be at least a few days before , so I'd planned on having everything ready before we leave town. Anyone have any suggestions, or perhaps can share with me what kind of stuff is in the housing info packet? Thanks, Debbie
  22. Health/PE courses were all pass/fail ( and only .5 credits) so I just had mine read most of the book and we talked about it from time... A minimalist approach, I concede, but it's not like much of that info wasn't just part of their normal childhood training already. Blessings, Debbie
  23. Thanks -- this is encouraging! Do you have any sense of how each 'book' corresponds to a high school credit?
