I think it entirely depends on the child. At that age, I was an avid reader and read just about anything I could get my hands on. No censorship. But I had a friend and her mom really should have censored her. Some ideas were just too much for her at that age. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

A Few Questions for ELTL/RLTL users
lanalouwho replied to AFthfulJrney's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I'm using RLTL with my kinder son. It sounds like you are doing it exactly as she intended. Once you learn the basic phonograms, then you start adding in spelling lists and rules. It's very gentle in the beginning. I haven't used ELTL yet, but maybe you could turn the dictation into copy work until your daughter's spelling improves? As a former service member, there are definite advantages to getting married. Housing, health insurance, and a great support system will be available if they make it legal. On the other hand, military life can put a LOT of stress on any relationship, whether or not he gets deployed. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

I would choose one book at a time to read together. Do narrations and discussions on that book. Otherwise, just let him read. Nothing kills a love of books faster than turning every one into an assignment. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

The Reading Lesson or Phonics Pathways for a 6 year old?
lanalouwho replied to QueenT's topic in PreK and K
I have no experience with Phonics Pathways. I got the Reading Lesson for my son and I didn't like it. The way it teaches is fun, but throughout the book there are incomplete sentences and words are not capitalized. It irked me to no end. We are doing RLTL now and I like it. -
We have one called geek dad. I think it looks awesome, but dh hasn't ever actually gotten around to doing anything. Maybe I'll go through it with them someday. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

ultimate goals in homeschooling?
lanalouwho replied to lgliser's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm just starting out, so specific goals for this year are really just to learn what works for us and what doesn't. Ultimately, though, I want my kids to grow up to be well-read, well-spoken, and passionate adults. I want them to be able to pursue their interests, think outside-of-the-box, and find joy in each and every day. I want them to have the kind of confidence that I wish I had. I want them to start adult life with a basic understanding of where they want to go. I want them to learn to handle finances before they leave my home. I want them to stand up for themselves (and others). Basically, I want to prepare them to be good, happy, and successful, whatever that may mean to them. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk -
I live in South Texas. Nursing in public is not the norm here, but I never had any issue being discreet. My babies loved to nurse while in the carrier, so the carrier covered everything anyway. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

Phonics/Reading Program with clear objectives?

Another vote for RLTL. We're loving it so far. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk -
Do you score better deals shopping sales or hitting Goodwill?
lanalouwho replied to mommyoffive's topic in The Chat Board
I feel that way too. Totally unreasonable guilt! -
Do you score better deals shopping sales or hitting Goodwill?
lanalouwho replied to mommyoffive's topic in The Chat Board
For me, Goodwill is cheaper and I tend to have great luck at ours. But it's quite a drive away and there is no guarantee that I will always find something. So if I *need* something particular, I would shop sales instead. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk -
I love Texas. I do hide indoors for most of July/August, but I really prefer Texas weather to anywhere else I've lived. Missouri had very little going for it. Washington was beautiful, and the summers were mild. But it was always wet. You here about how it always rains, but it doesn't. It's more like this depressing mist that never ends. I missed storms when I lived there. I do wish it would snow here once in a while though. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

New to TWTM..looking for some help
lanalouwho replied to ChristinaHam2016's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old. We just started kindergarten. Like every one else said, I wouldn't rush into to formal academics. There's plenty of time for that later. We did lots (and lots) of read alouds, story time at the library, imaginative play and sing songs (I have a special love for schoolhouse rock). Work on teaching them basic skills like picking up after themselves and following directions. Work on shapes, colors, days of the week, etc. Let them get dirty. Explore outside. And remember, at this age, no matter what they are doing, they are always learning. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk- 16 replies

I was actually raised Catholic, and spent many years researching other religions trying to find one I agreed with so I already know the doctrine. I want to thank you all for your replies. I think we might go on a trial basis, and see what happens. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

Required number of school days? Do you count?
lanalouwho replied to Mom28kds's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm not required to count so I don't. At the beginning of the year, I planned which weeks we would take off and sort of loosely mapped 36 weeks of school. But it's really more of a general guide than some hard and fast plan. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk -
Tonight... Me: Boys, what do you want for dinner? 5yo: peanut butter sandwich. 2yo: cheese. That sounds better than me wasting an hour cooking a meal that no one will eat. Peanut butter and cheese it is. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

Okay, so here's my problem. I'm not religious but I live in a very religious town. Every homeschooler I know is religious. Every homeschool group in this county (and all surrounding counties) is religious. My brother and his family are members of a local Baptist Church, which hosts things like Upwards basketball for the kids. We have participated in a few of their things because there aren't any non-religious groups around here. I'm lonely, and have really been craving community lately. I know that I could join this church and there are a lot of great people there. I don't mind my kids being taught about Christianity, because I plan to teach them about all kinds of beliefs. But I think I would feel guilty. As if joining the church would be taking advantage since I have no intention of 'being saved.' I also wouldn't want to really discuss religion. It would be rude, in my opinion, to go to their place of worship and be all, "I don't believe any of this." So, I'm torn. I really need some sort of connection, and I don't know where else to find it. But I'm not convinced I would find it there, because I would feel guilty and have to filter my thoughts. What would you do? Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

If we're staying home, I can't even keep my kids dressed. It takes 15 minutes to get clothes on them, and in under an hour they've both stripped back down to their underwear. I've given up. That being said, I do make sure they have at least 5 tops and 5 bottoms that fit well. Of course, my MIL has a habit of buying bags full of garage sale clothes so they end up with a lot more than that. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

Is School Starting so much earlier this year, or is it just me?
lanalouwho replied to momacacia's topic in The Chat Board
I LOVE that movie! "It doesn't work. Nothing works. My little brother's building a rocketship in the basement- That'll probably work." I have to go watch it now. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk -
I've never used one. My kids aren't really runners. I did have one horrifying episode when my second was literally weeks old and his big brother bolted while I was trying to get him out of his carseat. Being barely postpartum and holding a newborn, I couldn't have caught him. Thankfully, some saint (an older mother who was super gracious about it) caught him right before he ran into traffic. I almost bought one right then and there, but he never did it again. I say if it keeps your kids safe, do what you have to do. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

I use a table I created in Word. I make plans for a 4 day week, and use the fifth day to catch up if we need it. I only plan/print checklists 6 weeks at a time. We do 6 weeks on, then a break week (a break for him, planning for me). During that week, I pull/print out all worksheets and put them behind the appropriate checklist. I love my hair short. My husband loves it too. But I hate getting haircuts all the time. I always get it cut, then end up not waiting way too long for the next cut. But then it drives me crazy so I cut it again. Unfortunately, this means most of the time my hair is in an awkward in between stage. Like right now. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
