  1. Since both "on the bench" and "in the park" are prepositional phrases, wouldn't it modify 'sat'? I don't really remember the rules, it's been a while since I diagrammed anything. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  2. I would be interested in strategies to encourage more detailed narrations or helping young children decide which details are important. I'm actually interested in reading all of it. My son is only kinder and we haven't really started narrations yet. I don't really know what it will look like for us. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  3. Go for it! Mixing prints is not as faux pa as it used to be. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  4. My oldest son has a language delay. When he was 2, I had no idea what the normal range should have been. If the lady who ran story time at the library hadn't said something to me, I don't think we would have gotten him the help he needed. I did not consider her input as being nosy or obtrusive. She saw him once a week for about 45 minutes, but she knew more about what was developmentally appropriate than I. She just suggested that we get a screening done, gave me ECI's info, and I am very grateful that she did. The OP is already helping this family. I think this puts her in a position where her input would not be unwelcome, and would likely be appreciated. I would simply suggest an evaluation, and take it one step at a time. 5. I make or piece together our costumes every year. Last year the boys were Batman and Robin. Those costumes were easy peasy and turned out great. Tights, underwear on the outside, attach some logos, and duct tape boots and belts. This year, they want to be Spiderman and the green goblin. I'm not sure how well a spider mask will go over (he's only 2), and a goblin costume is intimidating. I need to figure out how to do it. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk

  7. He's only on chapter 4? I'm looking at Peter Pan to include on our list this year, and if I remember correctly, they haven't even gotten to Neverland in chapter 4. I would ask that he read a little more and see if it picks up for him. If not, switch. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  8. We had a super busy week. Today is the only day this week that we don't have any outside engagements. I should use it to do some of the school work we neglected M-Th, catch up on laundry, clean the kitchen. Maybe take a nap. Nap should be high on the priority list. 9. Oh yeah. I would complain long and loud about that. Every potential customer in a hundred mile radius would hear me. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  10. I would start them both with ancients. That way you only have to teach one time period. Modify assignments to fit their levels. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  11. I use Fiskars. I usually find them at fabric or craft stores. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  12. I think I would make a fuss about it. If it had been a different company or a different agent, that would be a different story. But for the same guy to say one thing, and then completely contradict himself is enough to get me riled up. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  13. I love Hitchhikers Guide! I can't wait until my boys are old enough to read it. That being said, there are literally millions of good books out there. There is no reason to suffer through any that you don't connect with. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  14. My checklist has subjects down the side and days of the week along the top. The bottom 20 or so rows are left blank as 'additional' work. That way I can check off the actual curriculum lessons that we do or write in any other learning experiences or rabbit trails that come up. Last week, we didn't do our planned science experiment, but we had a big storm and my ds asked to learn about the water cycle. Great! I just marked through the original plan and wrote in what happened in the additional row. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  15. I don't want to Monday today. Can it be Saturday again? Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  16. I graduated at 17 and was offered an early graduate grant. I don't know if something like that would be available in your state, but it might be worth looking into. If he wants to go and is mature enough to handle 10th, I wouldn't hold him back. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  17. I've spent half my life wondering what the punchline to Judd Nelson's joke is. It still drives me bonkers. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  18. My kids aren't quite old enough for this yet, so I won't volunteer to test. But those sample pages are freaking adorable. I want to play with Beowulf. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  19. Have a discussion with their mom. Let her know that she and her family are safe now, and it's time to start putting things back together. Talk about their behavior. Is it normal or a reaction to the situation? What are some ideas that can help them feel more grounded? Discuss the house rules and offer to help them learn the rules. Be willing to help correct them, but don't make her feel like you are taking over. And, by the way, I think it is amazing that you would open your home to them in their time of need. I hope things start looking up for them soon. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  20. They do. I've never used it before though.I plan on speaking with a librarian soon about how long it usually takes, how to place requests, etc. But I'm still not sure how much more would be available. Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  21. I am considering using this next year for first grade. (I know, this year just started. I like to think ahead.) The only con I see is that our small town library only has a few of the books available. I don't want to buy all of the books. Not only because that can get expensive, but also because of a lack of shelving (or rather, my books already fill the myriad of shelves.) But I'm thinking it might still be worth it to use as a skeleton schedule, for the maps and timeline figures, and we can get other books from the library to substitute. So if you've used BYL 1....how easy is it to sub, are the maps/figures/activity ideas worth it, and which books would you consider essential? Thanks in advance.
  22. Congratulations on making this decision and welcome to the club! This is my first year also and the anxious nervous excitement is universal. But box day was so exciting! I absolutely would say something to her grandmother. If you question our choices, that's fine. But addressing it directly to the child is manipulative. Also, how does her birth mother feel (if she's still in the picture at all)? It would be easier to stand up to grandma if all 3 parents are on the same page. And remember, no one knows what's best for your kids better than the parents. Although plenty of people will offer unsolicited advice. If it takes a while to catch up, it might be 'your fault.' But if your DD sails ahead and thrives, that will also be your fault! I would definitely look for some activity for a sociable kid. Something once or twice a week in the evening should be just fine for now. Is she interested in theater? Or a book club at the library? Maybe craft classes on the weekend or a sport? Be careful not to overload yourself in the beginning, though. Find your rhythm and then start adding extras. And these boards are great for encouragement on those what-the-heck-did-I-get-myself-into? days. Welcome and enjoy the journey! Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  23. That's fabulous! Welcome to the boards! Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
  24. Fashion consulting! Start with your friend and do a wardrobe makeover. Spend some time and figure out what image she wants (style, colors, fit, etc).Help her go through her current closet and decide what's working (or not) and put together some outfits. If necessary, go shopping with her and find some stuff to complete her wardrobe. If you enjoy this and want to continue, you now have one satisfied customer! You could do online consulting if you want. Start a blog and have her as your first case study, before and after type thing. I've actually thought about doing something similar, but I suck at follow through. I'm glad you're feeling better, and wish you luck with this new adventure! Sent from my HTCD200LVW using Tapatalk
