  1. We speeched (spoke?) and parked. My boys have been given the instructions to do whatever they fancy as long as it doesn't interfere with what I'm doing. That means no bugging me and no broken bones. I don't have time for a hospital run.

I need to pack bags for the boys for 3 nights at my IL's. I need to pack a bag for 3 days and nights for me. DH has to pack his own stuff. I think I have to do a load of laundry so I actually have clothes to pack. I would like to straighten up the house a bit and get the dishes washed. I don't want to come home to a disaster. If there's time, I want to go to the Y tonight.

Tomorrow, I have to get the car inspected, and Captain Mal has his annual check-up. Then drop the boys off. DH will meet us there with the dogs. Then we are off for some grown-up time.

  2. I'm so pissed about our electric. A few minutes later and we would have missed it and gotten home too late to fix it. We lose electric sometimes, that's life, but they SHUT IT OFF! I'm pissy now. Pissy Slache. Grrr.

You have every right to be pissy. This wasn't an accidental weather/nature related incident. They messed up.

  3. Proud Homeschool Mama Moment:

Today we went to the local Discovery Museum with my mom and her husband. While we were there, Weapon X helped one of the employees. She was designing a robotics class for second graders that she is giving at an event in a couple weeks. She had the Dash robot and a launcher thing that she hadn't used before. He helped her figure out how to work the launcher and shoot balls into a goal that he built. Then he used blocks to design a maze and drove the robot through it. Both she and my parents were quite impressed.

  4. Interesting. I wonder if it's just never been on my radar because either I've learned to create structures I can live in and with, and so the scaffolding is already there? Or maybe neither of us are really crippled by it, and so it's just part of our personalities and not something that causes us significant difficulty on a regular basis?

For instance, he's naturally very neat. I was much more sloppy, and only got organized once I got rid of gluten in my diet. He also has digestive issues with gluten--so he's GF and much happier in that department. But he was always organized. This is the boy who periodically takes it upon himself to declutter his environment.

In other ways, though, he's a bit absent-minded. He might take longer to get ready to go because he needs all the things before he can go. He knows where they are, but he might have to gather them from his various work and play areas. He will double-check things that he's double-checked.

He has his notebooks of people and places in his story indexed, and multiple maps up on the wall for direction when he's writing.

Honestly, this sounds to me like he's purposefully creating the structure he needs to offset the scatterbrained bits.

  5. I've never been tested, and focus has never been an issue for me, or for him. We can be dedicated to a project to the point of forgetting about everything and everyone else in the pursuit of an inventive solution.

That's called hyperfocus and is actually a symptom of ADHD as well. I'm not saying you and your boy have it. I'm just saying that doesn't rule it out.

But I tend to agree with SWB when it comes to slapping labels on our kids. If possible, I would rather do my own research and tweak the way I teach rather than seeking a diagnosis and special services. Of course, if it's something I can't teach him to handle on my own, I will seek services. We do go to speech after all.

  6. You know, I understand and appreciate the sentiment that that song is trying to convey, but.... if the bills get too past due they will shut off your electricity and water, if the cleaning, scrubbing and cobwebs wait too long CPS will come and take your kids. And the dishes eventually have to be done, or you won’t have anything to eat off, unless you only eat off paper plates, in which case you will generate a whole lot of trash which, in keeping with the theme of the song, will not get taken out, thus inviting all sorts of vermin to make their home in your domicile.

Don't forget the fact the she neglected to buy groceries and has nothing to feed her family.

  7. Columbo eats sandwiches like I do. In a show I was watching, he took his peanut butter sandwich and put raisins on it.

(Slache don't look. I know that you are culinarily deprived and don't like raisins. . . )

I love raisins, but we can't have them in the house. My kids leave them out and then the dogs eat them. Then I freak out and spend the next 72 hours giving them activated charcoal and looking for signs of liver failure.

  8. Oh my goodness! :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Hope you are all getting some rest and recovery today.

Yes to the bazooka. Keep doing all the good things. You'll break through soon!

Ooooo, fun. Let's pretend! Let's pretend that all my kids are great at reading directions, will look up explanatory videos online when needed, can be trusted to check their own work and re-work missed things as necessary, and love all their subjects and can't wait to learn more about all of them. Oh, and also, don't really need me for anything. NOW let's pick out curricula!!! (Rubs hands together with glee!)

If all those things were true, I wouldn't need to pick out curricula. We would just live and learn and do projects together. Curricula is what tells me what to do because we are not self-motivated enough to do all the things you just said. We would be unschoolers if we were dedicated enough to make unschooling work. We're not, and would easily fall through to the not schooling side of the equation.

  9. Happy Birthday to Krissi's DD!

    Get well soon, Kernel.

((Tech Support)) Sorry about the car. I'm glad he's home and okay.

Thank you to whoever suggested the Kids N Pets cleaner. My carpets haven't been this clean in a while. It really does work.

I'm contemplating scrapping all my plans for next year and starting over. I think I'm just bored and want shiny new curriculum stuffs.

  10. My schnauzer talks to me. Not in English, but she and I will have entire back-and-forth conversations. She's quite expressive and somehow manages to get her point across.

We get an influx of fleas every few months. Because of where we live and the vast number of pets, there's really no way around it. I use Comfortis monthly, and then the 24-hour pills when there's an infestation. Salt in the carpets and under the couch cushions- Leave for 24 hours, vacuum, repeat.

  11. I think she thought Pastor does everything for the sermon and I do the bulletin. I work 4 hours a week doing the hand out (fill in the blank), power point, bulletin, and various small thing (this week I'm getting some maps together, creating Easter breakfast invitations and typing up a chart) and it takes her 4 hours to just do the bulletin so it would make sense in her mind that that's all I do.

No, she's a spoiled brat that's never had a job even though she's 65. She wants to be the church secretary because church is a social thing to her and it would elevate her status. She keeps saying "I didn't expect to have to do this" so I really think she planned on doing extremely little and that being acceptable.

That's not how jobs work. I wonder what getting fired will do for her social status...

  12.

Oh, and *something* for Dutch - they should finish RS Dutch this year. Continue with guitar/violin, I guess. Probably homeschool swim&gym... not sure. Probably should try to get speech therapy going again.

    Shoot me now.

My brain is working slowly right now. I read "RS Dutch" and couldn't figure it out. Right Start? No that's not right. Rod and Staff? Doubtful.

Rosetta Stone. That one makes sense.
