  1. I love the hobbit (Jrr Tolkien). I know it's pretty clean, but I can't remember if theres any violence. If there is I don't think it's very gory. Certainly nothing like the gore in lord of the rings. The Narnia series by CS Lewis is definitely kid friendly. I read them to my son when he was 7 and he loved them just as much as I do.
  2. Where do you cut that off then? Elementary? You can't expect a 12th grader to do school for 12 hours....
  3. What do those initials stand for ?
  4. Hmm, I've heard of it, but don't know much about it. Is it a complete core curric?
  5. We probably do it under that on most days, but I only have one kid and he's in 3rd grade. And we do take breaks, and do extracurric things too. But for school school it's probably less then that.
  6. I would search for used curriculum sales in your area. I find I get way better deals at one of those then online.
  7. I've been doing critical thinking company math with my son. He's going to be in 4th grade, and I'm not sure if I want to keep doing it or not. I mean it is pretty fun, I love the bright pictures and all. Just wanted to know of any other fun math currics out there. Something else that incorperates spiral learning (he hates doing the same thing every day and looking at a whole page of multiplucation problems or something like that.) Any recommendations? Oh and what is cle math??
  8. The way I see it he has plenty of money if he's filling old buses with sugar and spending all this time talking to people. Why doesn't he take that money and start his own healthy fast food chain? I would love it if there was one around here that was more healthy!! I think people would like the option and it's something that's lacking.
  9. I've been looking into killgallon, and it looks good. But doesn't sound like it contains a lot of grammar. I saw people talking about filling in for it by telling the kids different words for things. I honestly don't remember names for a lot of things. I loved creative writing but hated grammar.. my sons the same way. So I really need something comprehensive. Maybe someone who used this can tell me... would this work? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance. :)
  10. Also where do you think is the best place to buy grammer island? Is practice island and some of the others for the same age group or for older kids?
  11. Is Grammer Island a core curriculum? I guess I could pick and choose, but I'd rather stick to one curric for english if I could. Thanks so much for the reply I'll search for more info on them!
  12. For english this year (2nd grade) we are doing critical thinking co language smarts level c. And it's okay, but I feel like I have to force my son to do it every day. He hates anything monotonous. And while it's not the same thing every day, it's still pretty boring. So could anyone suggest a fun english curric? Something super creative maybe geared to kenetic learners or just plain fun? Please help!
  13. I am definitely winging it this year. My son is in Kindergarten, and I just have hooked on phonics. No writing in that. So I got some workbooks that have different activitys that include writing. Besides that I just got lined paper. (He likes to write us notes, even though he doesn't know how to spell many words yet, he sounds out ones he doesn't know and they're usually close enough to read. Also he'll be pen pals with a friend of mines daughter, so I think he'll have enough practice writing. (And stuff he will have fun at.)
  14. I found their Kindergarten mathematical reasoning book at a cirriculum sale, and I'm so glad I got it! Timmy loves it, it's interesting with gorgeous colored pictures. Now I really want to find their 1st grade book for a reasonable price. He's definitely going to finish the k book before our kindergarten year is over... in fact he's 1/4 done and it hasn't even started yet!
  15. Thanks for the tip Elizabeth! :) We have just started, and the only part he's had difficulty with so far are the 5 "sight" words he's suppose to memorize. He works so much better with sounding things out, so that will help a lot.
  16. Thanks that does give me some idea. I was also just planning to go at his pace.. I just wanted to get some idea of how much should be covered in K to make sure he wasn't going to fall behind or anything. (As I doubted I could get through all 5 boxes in one year lol)
  17. Someone gave me an old Hooked on Phonics set from 1998, and it has 5 different levels (each in their own box) And a parents guide box. But I don't see anything on it about ages or grades. I'm homeschooling Kindergarten, but I wondered if I could use this for 1st grade phonics too, maybe even 2nd grade? I figured someone on here has had to have used an old one like this at some point. TIA
  18. That's a good point, and I do plan on intergrating my own games and stuff. As long as the pages or workbooks are colorful and exciting, not repetitive, (Like if every day you do the exact same thing the only thing that changes is the letter..that would bore him, he likes things to be changed up).
  19. Christian content is great. He's closer to six and knows some letter sounds, but struggles with them. Fine motor skills are great, he can write pretty good for a 5 year old. I'll look into MFW, and also McRuffy, and Reading made easy. Thanks for all the suggestions. :001_smile: (already looked into the others and some are still on my maybe list ;))
  20. I've been reading a ton about phonics curriculum, and am having a hard time choosing one. I really want a fun curriculum, that doesn't take long to prepare, and is not super expensive. I would appreciate your recommendations, I just think Kindergarten should be fun, and I want my son to enjoy it. Thanks in advance for helping this homeschooling newbie. ;)
