  1. One of my long-time friends is trying to quit smoking. He has tried, struggled and failed to quit a number of times. I am a former smoker, so I realize that even this time may not be the final, 'quit.' Still, I wonder what words of encouragement you would choose to offer someone who is trying so hard.
  2. My sister. She new just what sort of 'shocked' face to make when I told her my husband has asked me to lose weight this year. The question, "Did you smack him?!" was also appreciated. :)
  3. I would love to vote, "In the morning," but I only manage to remember that once every couple of weeks. Usually I defrost something late in the afternoon, making use of the microwave's lower power settings.
  4. It doesn't seem to have a manual log-in option. One must either use his Google account (my sons' choice), or his facebook account.
  5. That all sounds wonderful. Thank you so much! Yes, he will live on campus. Based on the maps we've looked at online, it does look as if there is quite a lot within walking distance. I am certain we will have more questions, and I would love to send them your way if you don't mind.
  6. My son is looking closely at Hofstra University's Honors College. We will probably fly out for a visit in a couple of months, but until then I wonder if anyone here can give us an impression of the area (and of the school, if you are familiar). I wonder most about the ease of moving around the area. He will not have a car during his first year of school, so I am curious about public transit. I also would like to know if getting into the big city for internships, ect. would be a reasonable expectation. Thank you!
  7. My husband is a sports photographer. I have long wished that my he would sort and scan photos from the 35+ years of archives that we have in our home office. This past week I proposed that if he will sort and scan, I will color correct and blog a photo a day in his name. I am shocked and happily surprised at the motivation this has given him. He has been busy at the film scanner since I brought it up. We have decided to begin posting on January 1. He has already chosen several months worth of images. (corkytrewin.com)
  8. I wasn't aware until just recently that this shampoo was still available. We used to shampoo my elderly grandmother with something similar when she was in a nursing home. It was wonderful to be able to clean and style her hair for her even when she wasn't able to bathe normally. ETA: No-Rinse is the brand we used.
  9. We have three different bins: trash, recyclables and food waste. Food waste is taken out every evening after dinner. Trash (in a bag) and recyclables (not in a bag) are taken out when they are full. The trash usually goes out once a week since it is just tissue, plastic wrap, etc. Most of our output is food waste and recyclables.
  10. I've been considering doing something similar with Hunter. He has tummy trouble far too often these days, and as far as I can tell it's always after starchy food. Gluten is my first thought, and it does seem overwhelming. :grouphug:
  11. I voted no before I remembered I have a cousin in prison for molesting his step-daughters. I never knew him well, so his incarceration didn't come to mind right away.
  12. My husband seldom reads. When he does it is either a magazine, web article, or various excerpts from a book.
  13. Each of the fifteen schools my son applied to accepted Latin.
  14. I didn't intend to imply that it had anything to do with their options at home. I selected only that piece of text because I was reminded of the kids who have done the same thing at our house. I have no idea what they are offered in their own homes.
  15. I agree with this. My niece has issues with sugar consumption in her own home, be she always asks politely before eating anything from my candy dish.
  16. I just spotted the recipe for Mexican Hot Chocolate Roasted Pecans on the Tasty Kitchen blog. They look wonderful, and I bet they would ship nicely.
  17. I've had kids behave like this at our house. I always have a seasonal candy dish, even though we don't eat much candy. One dish tends to last the entire season. Unless those kids come over. They will stand at the candy dish and eat until it's gone. :001_huh:
  18. That is hilarious! Her pudding must be as boozy as mine.
  19. We can now add Gonzaga and Knox to his list of acceptances. Both with various scholarships.
  20. I wrap gifts as soon as they come into the house and immediately place them under the tree.
