  4. My kids are in private school right. We're coming home and I did HS my oldest two years... Anyway, last weekend in cub scouts this little first grader was reading and reading very well, much better than my second grader... For a second it bothered me, then i have nieces who could read fifth grade no problem at the age of 7. Yes that bothered me too...... But.... You child and my children will all end up reading fifth grade level in the end right??? I'd rather my children read on their garde level and comprehend first and foremost! And sometimes...let's be honest, people brag and stretch the truth sometimes.
  5. Is there someone who the kids stay with for the morning, if ya leave right now get there when it starts you could be back early afternoon. Or take em, everyone could rest this afternoon, have a meal and off to baseball.

  15. My R&S English is in the mail, but according to TWTM no need for a separate writing program when using it. I have been looking at Wws to add to my 5th grader too... What y'all think?
  16. First day of school is always outside, a celebration.
  17. http://www.chcweb.com/catalog/Religion/LiturgicalYear/AYearwithGodCelebratingtheLiturgicalYear/product_info.html Something for the whole family. Do you have a little one preparing for First Communion? I've used CHC 2nd grade for that. But you have to purchase the lesson plan and it's involved with activities. I do not necessarily do religion independent, it's something I like to do with each of the children to make sure they are where they need to be. Also we test with the diocese...so....that can make a difference on how you do religion. Christ Our Life series, by Loyola Press is used by our parish school. good luck!!!!
  18. Hello there, I just wanted to bring something to you attention, as I have a First grader next year. On page 52 of The Well Trained Mind, I quote "we recommend that you get at least halfway through OPGTR before beginning spelling". And i would have to agree. We've done spelling workout at that age and I found it to be a lovely match, following along quite well as a review of what was just learned in OPGTR. I know nothing about AAS. maybe someone can chime in. :bigear: Blessings.
  19. Well, I'll make a vote for MCP. I really like their phonics workbooks.
  20. I've purchased a few of the "A" books as well...I was thinking about just using them for the sake of *word problems" etc and for review. I was even thinking about going back a grade for the boys so it would definitely be review. kwim?
  21. I don't think you need to enroll with kids your's age. In the early grades, MODG is weaker in grammar. My friends supplement starting in third grade with Easy Grammar or something like that. I am going to supplement with MCT. MODG uses The Writing Road to Reading for spelling and phonics starting in the third grade. I'm not sure if I'll use that or not. I really don't know what questions you may have. I have used all through 2nd grade. So if you have any questions, just ask.
  22. The thing with MODG is that you are only purchasing her syllabus... the books that you will be purchasing can be used now or later even. It's really not that much, as far as work, in the K syllabus. It hasn't overwhelmed me or my Ker, what little of it I have used. Look at Sacred Heart Books, they are cheaper than most places that sell MODG materials and even have free shipping.
  23. I'm planning on using Mother of Divine Grace by Laura Berquist. I will change just a few things. Consists of: History: How Our Nation Began (read alouds as well as I Can Read series) Geography: Our American Heritage (Abeka) Language Arts: MCT rather than PLL Math: Abeka and Miguon (I've added that) Spelling/Phonics: Writing Road to Reading Religion: Child's Bible History and Baltimore Catechism (Catholic) Science: Exploring God's World (Abeka) Latin: English From the Roots Up (Word Cards only) Poetry: The Harp and Laural Wreath (Laura Berquist) and MCT Art: Childsize Masterpieces, Mommy It's Renoir! and Art Classes once a week Music: Let's Learn Music, Choir at Church and Listening to Classical (of course) I think that's it. :001_smile:
  24. Any homeschoolers in your parish? Everyone else has answered many of your questions concerning academics, but I want to encourage you not to worry about teaching your son our Faith. There are numerous resources out there for us .... Also, you may want to look into the religious education in your parish...some do not require homeschoolers to attend and you are allowed to prepare him for First Holy Communion at home.
