  1. We used BJU DVDs for Algebra 1, and I'm so glad we did. I didn't feel comfortable teaching algebra at all, so we made the switch from Saxon to BJU with no problem at all. Ms. Genco is a wonderful video teacher. I watched along with him because I wanted to understand so that I could help him with his homework if need be.
  2. We used BJU with the DVDs. It worked well, but I don't think it's doable without the DVDs. I didn't know any Spanish when we started, but I've learned right along with my son. My only complaint is that the DVDs are from a BJU Linc satellite class, so there is student interaction and lot of instruction to those students at schools with IRUs. We just fast forward through that unneccessary stuff, though.
  3. My 9th grade son is doing this course this year with the videos, and we both agree it is hard! After doing this course, I think I am going to have to come up with some other alternative in 11th and 12th grades because I don't think Chemistry or Physics are for us. My sons test scores are horrible, but since he is also graded on labs and quizzes, etc., he will pass the class but that's about it. Of course, he really hates science. I hope Biology will be easier next year.
  4. Wow! I am blown away by how many hours some of you do school! (not saying anything is wrong with that, just stating an observation) This sort of makes me feel like maybe I'm doing something wrong. My 12 YO son is in 7th grade, and we are done by lunchtime each day. We do six subjects. He takes no breaks (his choice) because he wants to get it over with. We usually start around 7:30-8:00 am, and we are done with the formal schooling by 10:00 or 10:30. He then has homework in his four core subjects, and he usually finishes that by 12:00-12:30. It really depends on what time he gets started. Some days he is ready to begin at 7AM, and I am not! LOL! Other days he drags around until 8:30, so he obviously finishes later. I would say our average school day complete with homework is four hours. He knows not to fly through his work just to get done because I will make him redo sloppy or incorrect work. I just assumed we get done earlier than a regular school because I only have one student, so I only have to make sure my one student understands and is learning. Anyone else out there like me?
  5. This probably sounds strange, but I have finally just given up on handwriting with my 7th grade son. It finally dawned on me that I NEVER use cursive except to sign my name, so why should I keep pushing him to practice cursive writing? His printing is very neat and easy to read. He can write in cursive, but he just hates it. Realistically, he'll probably never use it. Okay, I agree with him. But I do want to make sure he can read cursive writing. Is there a website or even a book that has stories, etc. written in cursive? Thanks for any help!
  6. My DS hates English (everything about it! LOL!). This is our first year with Abeka. He is doing great with the literature portion with absolutely no problem. He is now doing pretty good with the spelling portion now that I have been letting him study the exact spelling and vocabulary words that will be on his tests. It just wasn't working before with him studying the last three lists not knowing which words would be on the test. But he just doesn't "get" the grammar. Example: He took a test yesterday where he had to identify italicized words, i.e., IO, DO, DA, PN, S, etc. Well, he missed almost all of them. He just can't keep them all straight, and the diagramming is a nightmare! I'm afraid if we stick with the grammar portion he is just going to get more and more confused. We tried Easy Grammar last year, and that didn't click for him either. Before that, we used Bob Jones for years, but that really didn't work either. I am considering going with Saxon Grammar and Writing. We have used Saxon Math for the last three years, and it has worked beautifully. I am wondering if I should just order the 7th grade Saxon Grammar and Writing and just start at the beginning of the book in January. Obviously, we won't finish the book by the end of the year, but maybe he will at least learn and retain something. (I hereby promise if I find something that works I will stick with it! LOL! I don't want to be a curriculum jumper!) Any advice?
  7. I bought these from CBD: http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=162170&item_code=WW&netp_id=423756&event=ESRCN&view=covers
  8. I think one difference is that Vocabulary from Classical Roots is an actual workbook, and with English From the Roots Up you have to make vocabulary cards, etc.
  9. Abeka has a half semester Health course for high school. I haven't used it, though, so I don't know anything about it. I was thinking of using it in 10th grade for whichever semester ds wasn't doing driver's ed a co-op since driver's ed will be a half credit course.
  10. I think I read on Cathy Duffy's site that Abeka's 7th grade math book had a lot of "consumer math" type stuff in it.
  11. I don't know about the video portion, but BJU's Geography is a full year course, and Abeka's is only one semester. I love the look of BJU's new Cultural Geography book. It looks great!
  12. Delsym has worked for me, and it doesn't taste awful like so many others do!
  13. What about a bottle of lotion from Bath & Body Works? I love that stuff! And I'm in there way too often! LOL!
  14. My mother-in-law works in our city school system, and my son loves to stay with grandma when she is out of school, so we follow that schedule. It's a modified year-round schedule. We have a fall break for one week, christmas break for two weeks, and spring break for one week. Our summer break is eight weeks. That's the perfect amount for us. This also keeps him on the same schedule as his friends at church. We modify the schedule when we need to. There is no way he would stand for school in the summer, and frankly, I need the break, too! LOL!
  15. This one was for free shipping, but I'm not sure it's good anymore. You can try: 288879AAHTTL
