  1. Thank you Juliegmom, it's very encouraging. I have a good feeling about this. (I mean trying CLE).
  2. As much as I like BJU, I find that there are too many components, like A Beka; they are expensive, esp. the dvd-s, and she would not like a big fat textbook plus a student activity manual. I understand that we need to get her ready for high school math but she has challenges and that is one big reason we are homeschooling. So we don't have to use public school textbooks. I think I'll give CLE a shot this year. It seems like a lot of people have success with CLE on this board. Thanks for your suggestion, though.
  3. Thank you all for your ideas. I looked at the suggestions and I think I'll go with CLE and give her the placement test. Might get J A as a backup, just to have.
  4. I need help! My DD is entering grade 7. She is a creative child and hates math. In the early years we used Horizons which was OK, she did not love it but managed. we also tried Teaching Textbooks and she hated it. At grade 6 she was so tired of still doing multiplications and divisions day after day. She was bored. She's borderline OCD . Here are the issues; She doesn't like doing math on the computer. Prefers workbooks. She hates heavy fat books and finds them frustrating when trying to use a workbook at the same time. So thin workbooks preferred. Tried Lifepac, went to the garbage. Saxon made all my kids cry, not just her. She hates small font and cluttered pages. We checked Math Mammoth online, seems too cluttered, as well as Horizons and A Beka. So I'm looking for a curriculum that is not common core, not online or cd-rom, not a heavy textbook with separate workbook, the pages are free of clutter and enough room to work out the problems. Considering CLE....or Key to...? She doesn't like math but did well on her CAT tests.
  5. vegsource.com/homeschool has discussions and classifieds, but it's a pain to navigate and find anything.
  6. I'm thinking about the same thing. My DD is not a science person and doesn't want to dissect so we'll watch online dissections (e.g. froguts) in addition to the DVDs. She will do microscope labs ( I already have a scope and slide set) and nature sketches, taxonomy reports, plus easy experiments that don't involve guts. Maybe not as basic as the suggestions in the 101 syllabus. I'll use standard lab report sheets/printables I have found online. I think I'll also use the Building Blocks of Life Science from Master Books to supplement the teaching portion, because Master Books and AIG are close in content, and because it's inexpensive yet thorough. You can also find textbooks in the library or Goodwill and supplement from there, depending on what you need.
  7. I had this bookmarked, it's for high school but can be adapted to junior high http://7sistershomeschool.com/homeschool-co-op-high-school-elective/
  8. Another suggestion, Landmark's Freedom Baptist Science grade 12 Scientific Creationism http://www.landmarklfbc.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_9&products_id=90 It seems that it discusses different theories, but in the end it is Baptist, so expect Baptist worldview and possibly KJV. You can preview the pages on cbd. http://www.christianbook.com/landmarks-freedom-science-s160-scientific-creationism/pd/31859?event=EBRN
  9. I also test them according to their current grade level just to satisfy the school requirements. We use the California Achievement tests, which only tests math and English, only these are required in my state. I don't want to test them in Social Studies and Science, if I don't have to, because we are not following the schedule for regular schools.
  10. Hi everyone! I usually use Seton for testing my kids (current CAT versions), but found that Christian Liberty has a cheaper version of the CAT but they are from 1970! Has anyone tried them and can tell me the difference or how difficult they are compared to the current versions? I'm afraid my kids won't do well on something from the 70s!
  11. Thanks for asking about this. I'm a little confused about them too.
