  1. I was left 7.5 years younger than the next youngest due to my brother in between passing away at age 5. I had a great childhood and am very close to my parents but I was super lonely and absolutely did not want that situation in my own family if I could possibly avoid it.  My last two are 21 months apart  😉 which wasn't planned exactly but I'm happy about it.

For me we chose induction primarily because it heats our kitchen the least. Our kitchen is in an area of our house that struggles to stay cool in the summer. It was almost painful to use the oven or stove because it just heated the whole room up. When we remodeled, we went induction and it has made a huge difference.

We have all sorts of camping supplies, so cooking during outages isn't a consideration for me. Our outages only ever last an hour or so here anyways.

This is good information for sure. I live where it gets to 115+ in the summer and I don't use my oven at all.   I do use the cooktop but hadn't considered that gas may heat up the room more. It is an open space so maybe that would help.

  3. Yes I have considered that now is the time to get gas before it's outlawed.    I live in Vegas which we "affectionately" call little California so it's probably a matter of time.

We don't deal with power outages with any regularity but also have a large camp chef which would allow us to use that as need as well as a nice outdoor grill.

(New)Wood burning fireplaces are outlawed although we have two already.  Not sure about stoves but we wouldn't have anywhere to put one.

The ease of cleaning is about the one pro I can think of with induction.  I'm not sure the speed and responsiveness is better (or even as good) than gas but maybe it is.

I am in the crunchy side so fossil fuels plus indoor air quality is a consideration. But I just LOVE cooking on gas so much 😔

The thought of regret is the reason my husband thinks we should just do it.  We will also run lines for the dryer (which is on the way out anyway) and the water heater and the pool as well.   Possibly more.  Probably would put a line in for a double oven for when we need to replace it.

Ahhhh so much conflicting info here just like everyone I ask.

  4. We are doing a kitchen remodel and waited until we had enough money to plumb for gas. Our kitchen people suggested I look at induction because the cost of bringing gas to the house and then through the house is pretty high.   I have had a glass top electric for 10 years that I HATE. I miss the responsiveness of gas.  The ability to adjust the temperature and have it go up or down immediately.  To have a consistent medium heat. To not overheat pans trying to get them to a temperature for cooking in some reasonable time frame.

I know about the pans needed for induction. I need new pans anyways and use a lot of cast iron so not a problem.

What else to consider? I especially want to hear from people who cook a lot and have used both for a good length of time (like more than just on vacation or something).

My husband is pushing for gas because he thinks I will be disappointed that we didn't do it as I have wanted it every single day for 10 years and love it when I'm at my parents etc. We had gas for 12 years in our previous house. So it's a known. I know I will like it. What I don't know is if I would like induction so it's a risk. I might love it. But I don't know and can't know without trying it.  So I'm trying to crowd source especially for those who have used both.  And cook a lot.

  5. I have had 4 kids get married in the last 5 years (they were born in 5 years too 🤣) and none of them gave favors. It wasn't even on our minds.   I don't think anyone missed them.  We did have photo booths at some(all?) and I think a way to share them.  I do like that idea a lot and if someone has a nice printer it wouldn't be that expensive or just send the digital file to them. Nice background and a pro photographer would be awesome.

This isn't relevant but the most used favor we ever received was a mix CD.  It had a picture of the couple printed on the front and a variety of great songs.  We played that thing in the car for years.   But alas that is outdated 🤣

Form can make a big difference, and just wanting to note that for some people, methylated vitamins make things worse instead of better. If anxiety and irritability spike after starting a supplement, check if it’s methylated and try the opposite.

I have heard that and experimenting is probably ok but I think you can know for sure by running your genes.

I got my bloodwork back today and my levels were 379. But I’ve been on a b-complex for the last 4 months, although I don’t take it every day. I’m not great at consistent supplement taking, but I’ve taken it more than 50% of the days.
I’m reading that my blood test wouldn’t be accurate?
Is there any way to get a true number if you’ve already been supplementing?

My Dr wants me in an optimal range which is much higher than the lab ranges.  I couldn't get mine there until I started taking menthocolobalimin.  Spelling is probably way off.  But anyways in 6 weeks my numbers quadrupled after 8+ years of being unable to raise them.   He had just recently learned about a gene mutation that caused a difficulty in processing B12 from food or supplements. Similar to MTHFR.   After my numbers rose so quickly with the change we tested my genes just for confirmation and I did have the mutation. It is probably the root cause of my hypothyroidism.   And getting my daughter on the correct form healed her chronic cankor sores that had been raging for 6+ years by that point.  I had tried everything, many many doctors and dentists and all the things and we could not get her to stop breaking out in them.  She would have 8-10 at a time and her mouth would swell to the point that you could tell from across the room that she had them. It was horrible. Horrible. Horrible.  Pretty much the worst thing I had been through with any of my 9 kids medically.  (I know there is much worse out there, we have been blessed for sure but it was so hard). Anyways she is totally free of them now as long as she takes her B12. Again, correct form.

That's a relief! I can handle kids being crazy loud but machine noises can be really overwhelming to me.

Maybe there is someone local who could let you see those in action? I would hate to steer you wrong.

  9. I posted before I read the replies. I don't leave mine out on the counter so that's not an issue. It's really light so it's not a big deal to move it in and out of the lower drawers. I also don't find it noisy. It doesn't even approach a blender or a food processor in my opinion. I have struggled with it walking off the counter although since I posted about about that problem and getting a mixer cabinet when we remodel the kitchen it really hasn't been doing it so I don't know what the difference is.

I am getting into baking and would like to make most of our family's bread, pizza dough, rolls, etc. I have a bread machine and a hand mixer. I've been considering asking for a KitchenAid stand mixer for my birthday but I don't know if it's worth the cost. Is it really that much better than a hand mixer? Some things I read say it's not really meant for kneading, have you found that to be true? We would get it at Costco so I could return easily if motor goes out.

Bosch all the way if you are going to be consistent with bread.  For occasional small batches some of the kitchen aids (stronger motor) can be ok, I've heard.   I have had my Bosch for 22 years and have made countless batches of 4-5 loaves of bread for my large family and I even sold loaves for awhile and it's still going strong. Nothing else compares for this purpose.

Now, I also want a kitchen aid for things like cookies, cakes and whipped cream. I don't find the Bosch convenient for those kinds of things.

Can she solve a Rubik’s cube? People seem to be impressed with that.

No kidding! My son (was probably 14/15) walked up to some kids at a high school football game who were messing with one and said if you give me a dollar I will solve that for you. They didn't believe he could do it but not only followed through with the dollar but took him around to several other groups who also paid to see him solve it 🤣

I have used it for large (5#] batches of meatloaf for the freezer, and larger batches of cookies..etc.

Whipping cream, cake, Etc, the old hand mixer comes out.
I have no room for KA. They are much Cuter tho!

I haven't either had room for both but with the remodel I think I will so I'm excited.

Yikes, that sounds tedious. It shouldn't do that (obviously). Even if you strapped it to a shelf, that much motion might be more than the shelf supports could handle.

Yeah.... That's what I'm worried about.  Maybe I just just scrap the whole idea.

I have a Bosch mixer that I use regularly for bread (I mix four loaves of 100% whole wheat bread at a time, so it's a lot of dough).  In 11 years, I've had it move around one time.  I wonder if there's something off kilter with yours?  Because mine would be happy on a shelf (which I didn't even know existed before this thread).

Really?!?! Huh.  I don't remember always having to do this but it did walk off the counter once about 5 years ago and broke the bowl. I had to get a replacement.  So I'm super paranoid now.  There is no longer a repair shop in my town but I can take it somewhere when you go to see my kids.

I wonder why ATK didn’t  review the Bosch.

They did several years back, but they set aside it being a workhouse and claimed it didn’t do small batches well..like a cake, or whipping cream, therefore they didn’t recommend it. At least that’s how I remember it.

That's exactly my experience. Great for bread and wouldn't change it but everything else is currently done with a hand mixer and I would like the kitchen aid for that.

Nothing to do with the shelf, but regarding replacing your mixer:  If you search, there is a thread on here where America's Test Kitchen did not recommend Kitchen Aids for bread mixing because the motor can't take it. It was something about KA saying they didn't recommend using the mixer at a certain speed over a certain number of minutes which meant that breadmaking was out.  So I would not replace your current mixer with a Kitchen Aid if you like it and it works well.

Oh no not replace. In addition to.  I don't use the Bosch for things like cookies or whipped cream or cakes. It's too large and bulky. I want a kitchen aid for what I currently use a hand mixer for.  But bread would still be in the Bosch for sure. I've had it 22 years at this point. It's a workhorse!

How do you keep the Bosch from walking off the counter now? The shelf would be like a counter while it is in use. I don't see a problem with adding a lip to the shelf, except I would want to keep the front open. The open front would make it a lot easier to wipe up flour spills and get the machine in and out if needed. That may not be a concern for the Bosch, but when lifting out my KitchenAid I often catch the foot on the 1" lip of the shelf. My KitchenAid lives on a sliding, but not lifting, shelf.

I have to stand there and hold it the whole time.

I totally get it I did think of getting this type of cabinet for my stand mixer. The size and shape ended up not being practical for my space is the only reason I don't have it. Of course now my stand mixer just lives on the countertop. So in my dreams I still like to fit the stand mixer shelf into my kitchen.

So I don't have a kitchen aid but I want one so first thought of doing two but now that I've seen the layout the designer came up with I know I only want one.   So if I went ahead and put it in and it didn't make sense for the Bosch I could get a kitchen aid and use it for that.  I've never wanted both because of space but now with more availability I think I do.

If it’s light, why would you even need or want a shelf that lifts it?

Well that's an interesting consideration 😜. Mostly I think I saw them and was like hey I want one. And now I'm debating if it's practical.  But also in my current arrangement I don't have a lot of counter space and so I was thinking it would be nice but the new kitchen actually will have a lot. Oh also where I have it stored now is such a hassle to get it out and put it back.  But that may already be improved with the new set up too. Hmmm.

If it physically fits the space I don't know why a kitchen aid would work and your Bosch wouldn't. The weight? (the specifications on the shelf should tell you if it can handle the weight, but the kitchen aid is pretty heavy).

So the Bosch is definitely lighter. But it just moves SO much when kneading bread.  I just don't know if it will work.

  21. I am getting a new kitchen and there are so many details to figure out. I am hoping for a lift up mixer shelf/cupboard but they are designed more for kitchen aids and I have a Bosch like this. I may actually also get a kitchen aid but for now I use the Bosch a lot for bread etc.  Does anyone know if it will work? It's walks a lot but the designer suggested they build a lip around it.

  22. I have heard people say that this information did not work for them but it worked shockingly well for me. I never was diagnosed with HG but did vomit usually 6-8 times a day for my first 4 girl pregnancies and then my last boy (of 5). Definitely thought he was a girl until the last few weeks when I had to get an us for an unrelated reason and found out it was actually a boy 🤣. My last pregnancy of 10 was a girl and I sailed right through it with no vomiting and only some nausea.  The simple carb solution everyone says was making mine worse, not better. YMMV

For sure. It's awful for me. I do use it occasionally but I'm aware of the risk. I wish I had figured out sooner that this is what was happening. She is bouncing off walls today!
