  1. I would say kindergarten :). Locally our our kindergarten cutoff states that you must turn 5 by December 1st so there are plenty of 4 year olds, just turned 5 year olds, and almost 6 year olds in each kindergarten class :).
  2. Actually my sister was able to get my nephew a medical fast pass so that they could bypass the lines. He occasionally gets low blood sugar and has fainted like once in his life and apparently that was enough to let him bypass the lines, lol.
  3. I bought these for my 6 year old on our recent Disney trip. We walked A LOT (close to 100 miles by the end of the trip) and he complained about a lot of things but at least he never complained about his feet, lol. https://www.zappos.com/p/plae-mimo-toddler-little-kid-green-spruce/product/8953476/color/196216?ef_id=WiXyfAAAAaU1V1Ek:20180223044909:s
  4. I love, love the patterns at "Tin Can Knits". There are some nice beginner level patters there :).
  5. Mmmmm..dijon ketchup! 🎶..if I had a million dollars..🎶
  6. I love this recipe :). https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/pastitsio-with-lamb-and-sausage-recipe-2201097
  7. Body Glide :). My husband works in a factory that is hot and sweaty and was getting constant chaffing rashes..since he started using this they have disappeared :).
  8. I think Suzuki may fit what you're looking for :). Keep in mind that I don't play an instrument or have any musical training, lol, but it's been a great fit for our musical kiddo :). Suzuki typically starts out by learning songs by ear while progressively working on foundational techniques and then begins working in learning to read music a little later. His playing ability is still above what he can read but we've been working on reading/playing music and the gap is quickly closing :). This is ds (just turned 6) after two years of lessons at a local Suzuki school.
  9. So how do we find out what the cut off for National Merit contention is in our state for the current year? We're in NY so I assume it requires a relatively competitive score but ds 15 is a sophomore this year so his score doesn't count towards NMS until next year. His index score this year is a 219.
  10. My sophomore took it this year partly to practice (outside of the CAT this is the only national test he's ever taken) and partly because he'd like to participate in a local dual enrollment program next year that requires a PSAT score. He scored a 1470, which from the report looks like a nice score so everybody is happy here today :).
  11. I understand..but really how long and how much effort does it take to chime in or call and say, "You know what we can't make it today after all." especially after reminders and requests for a "who's still coming?" update are sent out. I am absolutely guilty of backing out last minute on events but I ALWAYS let the host know and I always pay regardless. Thankfully this was a pay for yourself when you get there event so I didn't lose out on any money but like I said, our destination was to a children's museum an hour away..if I had known we were going to be walking around by ourselves with no friends to talk to or play with I would have just waited until my husband was on vacation and gone as a family. There's life getting in the way and then there's thoughtless and rude and based on the replies here it seems like there is a thoughtless and rude epidemic currently ravaging the homeschooling community, lol.
  12. Thank your for commiserating and for sharing your own experiences..it's good to know that we're not alone because I was about to start taking it personally, lol!
  13. Hi all..this is part vent and part curiosity as to whether other folks are experiencing the same thing. Flashback to a year ago. I planned a homeschooler get together at our local science museum through a local, active homeschooling Facebook group. Out of the TEN people that committed as "definitely going" ONE person showed up (and I don't think they were even on the "going" list..I think they were on the "maybe" list and decided to come last minute). There weren't any last minute, "Sorry we can't make it." the morning of or even any, "So sorry we missed it!" afterwards. Nothing. Folks just didn't show up and didn't bother letting me know. Flash foreword to a couple of days ago. Against my better judgement I planned another outing to a children's museum that is about an hour away. Same group of homeschoolers. I first asked if there was interest. Oh yes..lots of interest! I then asked which date was best..everyone agreed on said date and I officially put it up on the calendar. I bumped the event and posted to remind everyone that it was coming up. I messaged the folks on the "definitely going" and "maybe" list the day before and asked them to check in by the morning to confirm they were still coming so I knew who to look for. I sent out my cell phone number so that if something happened last minute or someone was late they could give me a call. Out of the four families that were "definitely coming" once again ONE showed up (2 hours after the planned meet up time). Nobody chimed in on the FB group or called my cell phone the morning of to say they couldn't make it. WTF? Ten years ago when I was just starting out with my now 15 year old son people planned things and if someone signed up and couldn't make it for the most part they were courteous enough to let the host/organizer know. Am I the only one living in the land of uncommittal, flaky homeschoolers?! Signed, Baffled in Buffalo
  14. I enjoy seeing them :). I've never bothered posting any "NOT back to school photos" (although I have lots of homeschool friends that do, lol) because, to me, it feels a little passive aggressive. For the brick and mortar school kids it's their first day back..their parents are excited, nervous, proud, happy whatever..I just "like" their pictures and let them have their day :).
  15. Whew..those last two episodes were pretty fantastic! :) I DID NOT LIKE the look Tyrion had on his face after his meeting with Cersei and also at the end of the show on the boat. I found it odd that they cut the conversation with Cersei right after Tryion realizes she's pregnant and we never get to find out how he managed to convince her to say she was sending her troops north. I have a bad feeling that after the pregnancy revelation he brokered some kind of deal with her to ensure the survival of the Lannister house and if that's so that means he's betrayed Dany. Did he tell her to lie about sending her troops north? Did he promise her that her child would be heir to the throne since he is assuming Dany can't have any children of her own? Whatever it is I don't like it.
  16. "Bend the knee.."..is that what the kids are calling it these days, lol.
  17. My guess is that the final scene of this season will be The Wall coming down...which should be pretty fantastic. I mean, the thing is huge, I can't even imagine the sight, sound, and feel of something that massive collapsing..I hope they feel it the way down to King's Landing..I want to see Cersei's face when she realizes what it is :).
  18. I agree that the pacing is really starting to irk me. I felt the same way when Dany managed to get her entire army of Dothraki off of Dragonstone (on only a few remaining boats!) and all the way to The Reach before Jaime made it back to King's Landing. This map demonstrates the ridiculousness of the timeline of this week's events. The red is Jon and crew, the dotted line is the raven, the blue is Dany, and the purple is everyone together. It seems that by only having Martin's ideas without his actual written material to pull from they are having trouble filling in the gaps between main events. I did enjoy the conversations on the trek beyond the wall..Gendry confronting the Brotherhood..Tormund and the Hound discussing Brienne..Jon trying to return Longclaw to Jorah. I think Tyrion brought up an heir only to make the point that right now if they lose her they lose everything. I'm still hopeful Dany might be able to have children someday :). I thought it was funny that she felt Jon is too short for her, lol. When Sansa found Arya's bag of faces I was like, "Awwwwkkkkkward." The chains required a big ol' pot of suspension of disbelief. Like we're supposed to believe that they're just dragging them around in case they need dredge a dragon out of a frozen lake. Even with it's flaws I can't get enough..next week is going to be good :)!
  19. Here are my thoughts and guesses...possible spoilers. Cersei is actually pregnant. I do think that Jaime will have some kind of redemption before the end..I don't know if that will mean killing her but I do think he will leave her and join the fight against the Night King in the end. I don't think either of them will survive to see this child born. Jaime will die a hero. Cersei will did alone..having lost everything and finally broken. Littlefinger won't survive this season. He's picking the wrong sisters to try and manipulate. I'm almost positive that Arya will be the one to kill him. Don't mess with the Stark girls and also good riddance. Arya won't survive the series. This is just pure speculation on my part based on the arc of her character. Her character reminds me a bit of Frodo..she's been through too much to ever be whole again. I'm curious as to whether that dagger she's now carrying might be the weapon needed to kill the Night King..and who better to wield it than the most skilled fighter in Westeros? Will Arya be the one to take the NightKing down? I could be totally wrong..she could meet back up with Gendry..fall in love and they could go on to live happily and make a little brood of warrior children together, lol. Rhaegar and Lyanna were indeed in love..we will "see" proof of this before the end of the season..most likely in the form of Bran's visions. The revelation of Jon's parentage and Targaryen birthright could cause havoc and insight rebellion once the men who fight for him in the North find out their leader is a Targaryen. Snap. We'll find out Jon's given name...Jahaerys? Rhaegar? Aemon? Aegon? Brian? Either Beric or Thoros won't survive the trip beyond The Wall. My husband thinks that it's the Hound that will die and be brought back to Cersei as a Wight and that he'll fight the Mountain..I'm not so sure but we'll see. The Wall will come down before the end of this season. Jon and Dany will get together before the end of the season. One of Danys dragons will not survive this season and I'm highly suspicious may be the "how" of The Wall being taken down in the show. Since there has been no mention of "The Horn of Winter" up until now I'm thinking the only thing capable of taking down the wall would be a dragon. A wight dragon at the command of the Night King would be a mighty powerful weapon. Once again..pure speculation on my part but I wonder if Tyrion is actually a Targaryen too. There are more hints at it in the books (his pale blonde hair, fascination with dragons, hints that Aerys had a thing for his mother, Joanna) but if he was then he would be able to ride a dragon.. Here are some things I have no solid hunches on.. Who is The Prince That Was Promised..Dany? Jon? Someone not thought of or even born yet?! Who will take the Iron Throne..Dany? Jon? THE NIGHT KING?! Why do they keep wasting time with Greyworm and Missandei's characters/story. Yawn. Nobody cares. What the heck ever happened to that spoiled little wussy Robin? Will we find out Yara's fate in this season? What will Bran's final purpose in the show be? Who was that other red witch that we saw in Essos and what the heck was that all about? I'm not one for fan theory videos because they can be a rabbit hole of speculative nonsense (is Bran the Night King?!) but i did find this video on the history and possible purpose of Arya's dagger fascinating :). https://www.youtube.com/embed/YgCR-vaXsTk SaveSave
  20. Your daughter sounds a lot like my 5 year old son :). There is a group called "Raising Poppies" on Facebook that is very active and has been a really helpful community/support for me. There is also a "Homeschooling Poppies" group as well :).
  21. They've been trying for years (since my older son was in 1st grade or so and he's a high school sophomore now) to get one started in our area. All of the attempts have quickly fizzled out though. It seems for CC to be successful you need folks who are both structured and able to commit and it has been my experience that the homeschoolers in our little corner of the world are (for the most part) neither, lol.
  22. We live 15 minutes from the falls...if you've never been then I'd say it's definitely worth the trip :). There is a small aquarium to visit nearby..you can do the walking tour on Goat Island (there is a trolley as well) and get a great view of the falls from there. There are a few other points of interest on Goat Island such as Three Sisters Island, Cave of the Winds, etc.. Maid of the Mist is fun as well :).
  23. Let her tweeze or wax it. It sounds like if you don't help her she's going to do it herself anyway. It's bothering her and is just not a hill worth dying on.
  24. I put my 5 year old in our local free Universal Pre-K program this year and it has been really wonderful :). It was only a half day program but those 2 1/2 hours of quiet time for my older to get some work done uninterrupted and for me to have a bit to time to get things done around the house or to do some grocery shopping was really, really nice. It's been beneficial for the five year old as well..he's had the opportunity to engage with some other kids his age (he's very shy) and he's done lots of fun stuff...so.many. crafts.
