  1. I have a 10th grader that I have hs his entire school career. He is vivacious, caring, and social, BUT could care less about school and I have to remind him weekly that the subjects he is doing now are required for graduation. He has always wanted to go to ps and this year I told him I would sign him up next year. The only reason he wants to go now is he would go to his girlfriend's school. I am actually a fan of this because it is a brand new hs and it is only starting out with 9th and 10 grade next year. Yes, he is in 10th this year, but he would redo 10th to get to go with his gf. go figure. He will only be 15 April 24th so he is actually a year ahead. HE has made A's and B;s this year and done a fine job, only because that is the only way he can see his gf. This gf (that I like a lot, she is a great girl, she talks to him about doing good in school, she is doing ALL honors classes is ps).Hey, I will take the good work he is doing now. IT used to take him 3-4 hours to do an hours worth of work, so him finishing now in record time each day and making good grades is a school party for me. BUt now, she may not be able to transfer to this new school, so he said he will stay home. SO back to my question: I see posts on here of a LOT, MOST, of these kids are like rocket scientist level minds, way ahead, they are achievers. Well, still not my kid. He is doing ONLY what he has to to graduate, but making good grades. He hates school, always has. He is undecided about his future career choice, but has leaned toward law enforcement. He is head strong and keeps saying "he'll do just fine." I love this kid with every breath, but he is a challenge and has been since he entered this world. He has 2 jobs,(cutting grass, and working in dog agility and search/ rescue dog training) does excellent WHEN he wants to, has a great sense of friends and what he should do as far as no drugs, drinking etc. I can trust him. He sticks to his values and doesn't get influenced by others. SO I try not to worry about his future, but I still worry about his future. Make sense? Any other kids out there that did it their way and succeeded!! I think I don't feel like HE is a failure, AT ALL, but maybe I am failing him in some way.
  2. I already know that one is expensive and one is free, but would like some personal opinions about content, etc. Thank you in advance
  3. He works close. I can't let him work in his room because he doesn't get anything done.I have let him work on the porch for warm days as a reward, but then he will end up not working. I do let him wear ipod to listen to music. Sometimes I 'm not sure that is helpful. I have tried so much. Different schedule. letting him make his own schedule as long as stuff gets marked off. This year he is doing a lot on the computer. For geo, I let him do powerpoint slides to retain info. I have tried to make it all interesting, but it is almost like the more I push for him to finish, the slower he gets. Maybe he IS trying to aggravate me. I am a little compulsive about schedules. They have a chart with all of their subject assignments for the week and I try to get them to be able to check off daily completions and then I let the high schooler kind of be more flexible as long as he gets it done for the week, so we can move on the next week. If he has a paper due in 2 weeks, it takes him 4. he doesn't even start it. I try to motivate him to take small steps. Lets talk about the subject, let's find our sources, start the intro, etc. He really wants to go to public school and I think he "punishes" me for hs him. He will even put up with the no ipod, activities, etc. He ends up punishing himself more. Is this just teenage mess? I teach at a co-op and you can really tell the kids that want to succeed and the ones that don't care. He acts like one of the meat heads. He sure makes it difficult. I know part of it is his personality. He has always been strong willed. :banghead: Some of it also is some emotional behavior about how one of our adopted kids affects our family with problems. He will also have to learn to adjust himself no matter what life throws his way and to handle things he can not change. It gets complicated, but the main thing for now is this time management. UGH!!! :boxing_smiley: :001_wub:
  4. How do you teach your homeschooler, especially high schooler, time management???????? My son will not get his work turned in on time. If he has a paper due on a Friday, it will be the next week, and it doesn't bother him to even try to do it on time. It drives me crazy!! Now, my 4th grader is doing the same thing because he sees the 9th grader doing it. I know it is my fault, but I am not sure how to enforce the deadline. They don't seem to care that they don't get to play or do other activities because they are late with an assignment. I know that if they had to go to public school, they would have rigid deadlines and if they didn't get the assignment on time, they would get an F. A friend on mine that sent her kids to ps said this almost caused them to fail. I know that we don't have to have deadlines in hs, but in life after hs, they will have to be able to meet deadlines. Plus, it drives me nuts for them to be late. I can't move ahead on the next lesson unless they finish the one they are late turning in. It is like they figure if they are late, then I can't move on. I have told them that it will leak over onto their summer, but then it screws up my time off too. They do homework all weekend, and always until bedtime. It is like they are always doing school and it isn't because I give too much work, it is that they piddle and take forever to complete something. the younger kid use to be great about getting finished and now, he doesn't care either. They don't even care if they get restricted or grounded from tv or ipod or games, whatever. I have failed somewhere to teach them time management. My older son has NEVER cared about this, NEVER!!! Help and thanks for any advice.
  5. Thanks so much, Michelle. I will check out your blog,RIGHT NOW!!! KAthy
  6. If so, can you give me your opinions. DOes he show labs in the DVD's
  7. Is it a requirement to write descriptions for each course taken by your high schooler for the transcript? If so, what info is added? Thank you in advance
  8. I have used Abeka for 8 years. My son hates math and is not strong in it. He hates it, so he doesn't apply himself. It takes him a LOOOOOOOOOOOONNG time to complete a page. Today I was told that Abeka is old school. I have considered TT before but was afraid of all the talk that it was behind other math in its levels. What is your opinion. I have to keep up with his math to be able to teach him. there have been a few problems that I struggled to get right. I was thinking the TT would handle that problem, especially with Algebra. I like the sample lessons and how it looks, but now I need other opinions. Please. You can be brutally honest. Thank you in advance.
  9. I have a rising 9th grader and I haven't let him use a calculator yet. But, I am aware that in his life time he will always have access to calculators on the technology that he uses, ipod, etc. I just know that when they start to use them, it will forever be a crutch. Also, don't they need the fancy calculator for Algebra? You can tell I haven't gone there yet! :crying: thanks in advance
  10. THANKS SO MUCH and I will start reading!!! SO much reading to do before I have ahigh schooler. I think I I have to do more studying than he will.
  11. What do you mean by RAW and that Lightroom is non-destructive?
  12. OK< What is RAW and what do you mean by Lightroom is non- destructive?
  13. Can I get some opinions about these two. The pros and cons. We are starting photography next year in 9th grade for arts credit. Thank you in advance
  14. Can anyone share with me their plans for computer learning in HS? WHat does you use to teach it? DO you teach them programming, making websites, gaming, etc. What do you use as a source or text? Thank you
  15. I do agree with you about that. I often find myself frustrated between the 2 books. I think it could be incorporated into one book. I think I am mostly using the student book also. After the first 2 lessons, the TE is not really needed.
  16. I never see much written in the forums about Write Shop II. I also never see it for sale. Is there a reason? DO you use Write Shop I and then move to something else? If so, what? I have used a lot of IEW and am now using Write Shop I. I like IEW, but some people were saying the if I combined them both, I would have a well-rounded curr. Let me know you thoughts. Thanks
  17. I adopted K when he was 4yo and he was behind with his colors, numbers, etc. We got him caught up and he even excelled and advanced ahead quickly. NOW he is almost 10 and does almost nothing in school except look around, play with his pencil, pick his eraser, etc. If he is having a good day, he MAY do some work, but if he doesn't want to work, he sits and messes. He has a LOT of diagnoses: ADHD, RAD( which makes his extremely defiant to me) ODD, OCD. His mental illness makes him prone to just not want to work to be defiant. He will intentially do it wrong, messy or whatever to try to make me mad. I know he can do everything I am asking of him, so then it becomes a game to him to push my buttons. I can not spend the day redirecting his moods, because it would take all day and I have other children that want to succeed. Believe me, this is a game of control for him and that is his main goal. My question is; he is not doing his work, I have already held him back in 3rd grade once, how would you pass him on to other grades and eventually graduate? SHould I just let him sit or continue to try and push him to learn at his level. He would be content to sit and color ( real baby work) and not be challenged at all. The work I am giving him is NOT too hard for him. He just doesn't want to do it. What are your thoughts about his school future and how to advance him from grade to grade for a diploma/certificate? Thanks in advance.
  18. I did that with the IEW USHB lessons. It correlated very well with our American history lessons and my boys seem to retain it all better. They liked it when the topic they were writing about showed up in the history book. I just love IEW. I am not familiar with WWS. IEW also has the USHB vol 2 that is more geared to the high school level. WE haven't done that one yet.
  19. I have also posted on the special kids forum I have son that has a list of problems. ADHD, OCD, ODD, PTSD, RAD, Tourettes. he used to do well in school and I don't know if he has reached a plateau and it is too hard. I don't think so because if I tie rewards to him finishing, he gets it done. Long story short. Most of his problems are behavioral and I am not going to foster his need to control my school with his games. I am wondering how you decide what their requirements in school will be. DO you have them try to keep up with regular requirements and then if they need to slow down, just slow down. When do you decide if they get a diploma or just pass them on with completion of a certficate?

  21. I was going to add that we start the year off good with art and music and then as we get behind or booged down, they both go by the wayside. IT is funny because I have a degree in art education.
  22. How do ya'll fit Art and Music into your schedule? What do you use? I was hoping to fit in some composer bio along with some examples of their music. My kids play bells at church and I was thinking of the recorder at home. They show no interest in wanting to play an instument. And for art I wanted to show some artists along with their work, plus teach my kids some drawing. I don't know how to schedule it. I was trying to do both on Fridays. I don't know whether to do one every other week, or do a month of music and then a month of art, or 4 months of music and 4 months of art. I figure if I do one every other week, they will forget the lessons in between and there isn't much time to foster interest in a "masterpiece". Thanks for any anwers.
  23. I am not familiar with Write Source. I have used IEW for the last few years. Can anyone compare and contast the good and bad about these two for me? Thank you in advance!!
  24. My son loves using the computer. I have looked into Teaching Textbooks, but they look behind what he is doing. The way he is going, maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing for all that review. He is just not doing well in math at all this year and it is goofy, careless mistakes. I am at my whits end. Trying to get him to pass his math. I love Abeka, I just think he may like doing math on the computer. Thoughts??
