  1. How do you organise their worksheets? Do you preload the pdfs, send them attached to an email, put a link in their calendar....? What apps do you use for written work? I need something that's compatible with my pc so I can mark it whilst she's still working on the ipad. We're used to using Word 2010, so something compatible/similar would be easier for us to use.
  2. :hurray:  :hurray: :hurray: :hurray: :hurray: :hurray: :hurray: :hurray:
  3. My first stop would be to the Jake's Bones website. There's a series of 3D books called Uncover a ....(Frog, Tiger, Shark, etc) which details the different bodily systems. DD was particularly keen on hamsters, so we included studying the Hamster Encyclopedia and added on info I found online about relative organ sizes, heart rates, etc. You might also want to take a look at The Brain Scoop on youtube, which includes dissections, so preview if you think it might be a problem.
  4. Chinese with Mike Galore Park SYRWTL English Elmwood Press maths textbooks
  5. I would buy a kindle to read classic books & to view the pdf files from CIMT for maths. Happy Scientist through the coop or youtube videos for science, or Middle School Chemistry if you want something rigorous.
  6. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! Using Google translate I was able to navigate around the site easily and find Peppa Pig dubbed. The links you posted worked for me, but a lot of the other videos are restricted to mainland China. DD has just started teaching herself Mandarin using Chinese with Mike videos, Zon.com and Busu.com - too soon to say if they're any good, but she seems motivated to stick with it. I also looking for more worksheets for her to use, since this seems to help her retention.
  7. Could you suggest getting together for practice at your destination? Otherwise, I'd stick to your original plan and enjoy the Parthenon.
  8. :iagree: If she's old enough to go somewhere without you, she's old enough to be told the truth.
  9. I don't censor or veto. I do try to provide information to help them choose for themselves. For example, last year I was reading The Other Boleyn Girl and DD1 asked if she could read it when I'd finished with it. Having read it, I was able to tell her that there were some scenes she wouldn't be comfortable reading and that it might be better left for at least a couple of years. The hardest part was trying to convey to her the level and nature of the passages without giving away the plot! :iagree: Talk, talk, talk.
  10. :grouphug: You've done a great job, and it's down to him now. DS is coming home this weekend for a post exam break
  11. I forgot to mention that she marks her own work. I find it works better that way since she pays attention to what she's got right or wrong rather than counting how many ticks I've put!
  12. You get access to the videos with the course. My older Dd is doing Ll2 now and had been working independently since about 1/3 rd of the way in to ll1. I did the flashcards with her, but the rest was all her. There are no videos for ll2 yet, but then the videos for level 1 weren't added until we'd finished it.
  13. Doing maths second, after another subject to warm up her brain, but not later in the day, helps my DD. We also offer the incentive of letting her burn her workbook on the campfire when it's complete. For some reason that particularly appeals to her.
  14. Congratulations! Lovely to see all your hard work paying off so you'll have more free time for you and yours.
  15. There's now a "for kids" version that talks about books such as the Narnia series, The Jungle Book, Percy Jackson, Huckleberry Finn, The Secret Garden, etc. The concepts he discusses are much more accessible when he relates them to books you are familiar with.
  16. Its also very effective against head lice. We used a neem & propolis shampooand conditioner which had a very " green" smell.
  17. The school summer holiday in the UK is 6 weeks, but we usually take time for camping in June & July, and again in September and have shorter breaks when the schools are off. Last summer they asked to start again mid August (schools go back at the beginning of September) & I'm planning something similar this year. We generally prefer to take time off during the year when DH can be off too, or odd days when the weather is good, we want to meet up with friends, or just because we're so very, very ready for a break.
  18. This week we're doing The Apprentice - Ebay Edition for stem. Dd thinks it's a lot of fun
  19. Those look like our Penguins! Do they also come with an orange flavour filling?
  20. I would give her the option of switching to a different sport or activity, encouraging her to investigate what options are out there so that she could switch at the end of the season, or perhaps try things out whilst continuing to play basketball.
  21. It would have to be something I REALLY wanted to do. I can't imagine at this point anything that I'd want to do that much, other than if it were to seek medical treatment or something of similar importance. I'm up then, but I wouldn't want to commit to being somewhere else that early on a weekly basis.
  22. My DD was very slow tying her laces until she discovered this method
  23. One of my pet hates is using adjectives as nouns, e.g. my DH talks about 'working for an acute.' I also intensely dislike the spreading habit over here of Americanising dates in adverts - Blah blah film 'at cinemas June 12th' which may sound fine to American ears but the English way is to say 'at cinemas FROM THE 12th OF June'
