  1. I would suggest snuggling up for a summer with The Little House on the Prairie series. Whatever you do, don't skip Farmer Boy. These are also fun to listen to on CD. Happy reading! Cornflower
  2. Thanks for all this interesting information ladies. My son is going in to 9th grade this coming fall and it gives me (and him) something to think about in advance. I'd like to really be able to put together a complete portfolio for college. Thanks again, Cornflower
  3. I applaud you for all you've done to find just what your son needs. Congratulations to him for doing so well at the DC try outs. Praying here that God will bless all your hard work to be the best mom that you can be. Take care, Cornflower
  4. I was wondering if anyone has used them. I'm thinking of having my highschooler do some computer electives through them over the next few years. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks so much! Cornflower
  5. Great question! I'm interested in the responses as well. Cornflower
  6. I agree that at this age they are still young and trying to find their way. I have a recommendation for some good foundational reading. It's series of three books written by Bob Schultz; Boyhood and Beyond, Created for Work and Practical Happiness. You can probably get these from your library. These books are great for fathers and sons to go through together. There are a few questions at the end of each chapter to discuss and think about. Have a great day! Cornflower
  7. My son will be in 9th grade this coming fall. We are going to be doing an American Literature course at home and we will incorporate vocab in with the books we read. For example; This summer he is starting on his list of books. Right now he's reading The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. He is keeping a vocabulary journal with each book that he'll be reading. Every time he comes across a word he doesn't know he writes it in his journal, looks it up and writes down the definition. I can already see that I am going to need to tweak this. This can disrupt the flow of the text so I think I'm going to have him just write the words down or highlight them and look them up after he reads the chapter. My other thought is to have him keep going like he is, then after he reads the book he can listen to it on CD. Have a great day! Cornflower
  8. Don't give up on Johnny Tremain. Try the book on tape if you can get it. This is a great book. Cornflower
  9. Last year I gave a graduate a gift card to Bed Bath and Beyond so she could decorate her dorm room. I also gave her a photo album that she could fill with memories. She loved it. Cornflower
  10. Hi! I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that the people at Chalk Dust are very helpful. You could very easily call and ask them this question directly. Cornflower
  11. I would go with your kids on this one. If they don't want to play with these children I would not make them (even if they do I would not let them) You don't want them to pick up these behaviors. This must be hard because of your friend. Maybe you could just spend time with her on occasion when your husband is home and can hang out with your kids. Cornflower
  12. My son loved these books. You don't want him to miss these. We love Farmer Boy and the rest of the series. You could even get them on cd from your library. Cornflower
  13. Any of the Ramona books on tape by Beverly Cleary are good and very funny. I think even your older ones might enjoy these. Also Adventures in Odyssey. Have a safe trip. Cornflower
  14. Take another look at how to use the program. There is a good explanation in the paperwork that it came with. The teacher does not expect the student to do so many problems. His recommendation is to do 25-30 problems per lesson and to only do math for 1 hour per day. If your daughter doesn't finish the lesson stop after the hour and have her finish it the next day. Try not to wear her down with math especially since it's challenging for her. Have a good evening! Cornflower
  15. We do two unit studies per year to just mix things up a little. I allow my ds to choose our unit studies and last year he chose pirates for one of our studies. We found this study to be very interesting. Lots of good books and movies on real pirates. YES, they were very bad people, but it was a good study to do with my son. Cornflower
  16. I haven't read all of the responses but, I would highly recommend filing a police report. This happened to us and our bank wanted us to at least have it on record that we filed a police report. Cornflower
