  1. How exciting for your kiddo! My son once wrote to Chuck Colson with an idea he had for ministry. A couple weeks later he received a letter back from him. He was thrilled. I know it's something he will never forget. Cindy
  2. We recently moved and have a formal living room for the first time. We have been in this house since Aug 2009. At first I was excited to have a formal living room. Then I found that it sat empty most of the time. It also happens to be the largest room in our home. We decided to turn it in to a family media room. Now we have a big screen TV and our computer in there with a sofa and chair. I have a teenage son and he can hang out in there when his friends come over and their not stuck upstairs in the bonus room. We turned that room in to a music room. Anyway my suggestion is to turn your room in to whatever family area you will use. Cornflower
  3. Your welcome! My son has also mentioned Maya, but he is very impressed with this program (and he is not so easily impressed). I hope your daughter enjoys the program. Cindy
  4. Hi Ladies, I just wanted to share a site with you that we recently found. It's for 3-D Graphics and Animation. This is a free download and is quite involved. I would say this is for high school level. It's challenging, but for students interested in this kind of thing it is a wonderful find. Here is the link http://www.blender.org/ There are several tutorials on the site under the education and help section.
  5. We will be doing Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings. I thought this would be a good fit with the Middle Ages. Plus my son is excited to do this, always nice in homeschooling.
  6. My son would like to focus on the middle ages for his high school world history program. I'm looking for a good spine to use. Anybody have any suggestions? I would like to use The Teaching Company Dvd's with whatever we end up using. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Cornflower
  7. Another vote for Chalkdust. This has been a great math program for us. Cornflower
  8. You might check with your library. Our library has this set. I think the videos are very well done, the pictures are beautiful, and the expanlations are very clear. Having said that, my plan was to do the videos along-side Apologia Biology. While I think the videos are very well done, my son pretty much knew all the information that was being taught. I would say the videos are more of a junior high level, although for a student who struggles some with science I think Biology 101 would work very well at reinforcing the concepts taught in Biology. Check your library before you buy them. Have a great day! Cornflower
  9. I recently purchased a list from motivated mom's. The cost is $8.00 and it's well worth it to help you stay on track. The list enables me to give my son different chores everyday. I print the list once a week and I put his name next to the chores I want him to do for each day. Sometimes he chooses his chores and sometimes I assign them. He prefers having a variety of different things to do rather then doing the same thing all the time. Here is a link where you can purchase your list and see a sample. http://www.motivatedmoms.com/products.html Scroll down the page and you can view samples. I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned. I did not read all the responses. Have a good weekend, Cornflower
  10. Make sure you let the steak rest for about 10 minutes before eating it. This will allow the juices to redistribute in the steak. Otherwise the juices will end up all over the plate and the steak will be dry. Bon Appetite, Cornflower
  11. I don't know if you can do a study like this without doing a Tolkien book.:)) Maybe towards the end of your study since he is fairly recent.
  12. I wonder if your son would enjoy some kind of forensics study. I think you could search these boards and find some different options. Just a thought that popped in to my head while reading the responses. Have a good weekend, Cornflower
  13. Wow, that is some list. I admire your tenacity. Maybe think about throwing in some Teaching Company videos. Our library has several, so you might check there first. Maybe you had these listed and I didn't see them. Sorry if that's the case. Take care! Cornflower
  14. Abeka has a good keyboarding course. The course is one semester and you can take 1/2 credit for it. Cornflower
  15. Hi Georgia, Thanks for your reply. We enjoyed looking at your husbands web site. My son wants to buy a body blank to carve out the guitar. The other elements, he wants to buy pre-made and assemble them together. Thanks! Jane, Thanks for your reply as well. That's interesting, I don't think he has ever thought of anything like that.
  16. Hi ladies, I'm still new here but I always get so much great advice reading the forum. My son is 15 years old and interested in building his own electric guitar. Just wondering if any of your kids have been there done that? Any advice or web sites with good information or prices would be much appreciated. Thanks so much! Blessings, Cornflower

  19. Another hearty recommendation for Total Health. We used the Jr. high edition and we are looking forward to the high school edition. Coenflower
  20. I'm right there with you gals. I went to a homeschooling high school seminar last night with my husband and my soon to be 9th grader. We all enjoyed it and were encouraged. Hang in there! If you need help with transcripts you could check out the Homescholar. Here is a link http://www.thehomescholar.com/ Take care, Cornflower
  21. Good morning! We have started this for our American Literature class. I am still tweaking this but here are some ideas. First of all I don't have him do it for every book he reads. I don't want to destroy his love for reading. Right now my son is reading The Red Badge of Courage. At first he was writing down each word he did not know and looking up the definition. This really disrupted the flow of the book. Now he writes the word down and looks it up after he has finished the chapter and then reads back over that section of the chapter. When he finishes the book he is going to type up the list in alphabetical order and note what chapter the word came from. For the books that we own he is going to highlight the word while reading and then go back to look it up. Some of these books are difficult to read, so the one's that we can get on CD to listen to, we will AFTER he has read them. He learns really well this way and won't lose the flow of the text because he has to look up a word. We have twelve books that we are going to do in this way. 1 down 11 to go. In the end he will have a nice vocabulary journal and in my view this is the best way to "do" vocabulary. We don't do a separate vocab curriculum. Hope that gives you some ideas. Hve a great day! Cornflower
  22. I would finish the book over the summer. I think at this stage of math the book needs to be completed. We have about 15 lessons in our math book to go. We are done with everything else, but keep pluggin away to finish math. Your daughter may feel more confident going in to next year if you work over the summer. Take care, Cornflower
  23. Glad to hear that you can bring your dc home. Take care, Cornflower
  24. Hi Maryjo, Sounds like fun. We visited Germany last year and my son would like to learn German for his high school foreign language credit. What program are you using? Thanks, Cornflower
