I think it entirely depends on the person. I know people who have a BA and have made a nice living outside their original field of study. I also know people who have doctorates and are still scraping by. Have you looked at the technical degrees at your local community college? If you're wanting to do something else that may be a great place to start. I have a friend who has recently gone back for a dental assisting certificate and is really happy with it.
