  1. I recommend using an on-line class for Latin. There are a lot of good ones out there.
  2. My son switched from Henle to Wheelock. He definately has learned more from the Wheelock program. He did well on the NLE
  3. My son used TT for Algebra 1. Initially, he also had trouble with word problems. As he progressed through the course he became better at the word problems. TT uses so much repetition that he sort of internalized what to do. Tell her not to skip the word problems because that is the point of Algebra, it can be used for real problems. Perhaps supplement with a book that gives word problems for Alg 1. It may be that she needs the review here.
  4. It's really hard to how much time he put in. He's a perfectionist so he worked very hard to get all A+'s. On exam weeks and when paper's were due, he didn't do anything but R.C. I'm sure other students didn't put as much work into it as he did, but he doesn't do anything half way. Another factor was that he had a heavy extra-curricular schedule as well. He had scouts and went to our local high school for band and jazz band classes as well. This year, I designed my own curriculum. I didn't like losing my homeschool flexibility which was the case with R.C.
  5. My son took Humanities 1 and Henle latin with them last year. The classes were very good, but it was very time comsuming. He ended up getting behind in math (had to finish over the summer) due to the amount of time he was putting in for R.C.
  6. I just realized I was unclear. Definitely do the 2nd half of Alg. 2 and then proceed to Precalculus to cover the additional topics. If she takes the ACT, those additional topics are needed. Cathy
  7. Teaching Textbooks Alg. 2 is fine if you also use Teaching Textbooks Precalculus in the same year. It can be done since it goes slowly. You could easily skip the 1st part of the Alg. 2 book since it's mostly a review of Alg. 1 and then proceed into the Precalculus book. I would not use the Alg. 2 book alone because it doesn't cover a lot of things normally covered in other Alg. 2 texts. It teaches those concepts in Precalculus. My ds finished their Alg. 2 book and tried to go into another text for Precalculus. It was very hard and time consuming because he hadn't been exposed to functions, logs, matrices, etc. I must say though that he definitely understood the material that was presented in the book; it just didn't go far enough to cover a standard Alg. 2 course. Hope this helps. Cathy
  8. I've tried to have my child do it on his own and have tried the on-line course. I highly recommend the on-line course. One child did Henle with Memoria Press on line and another did Wheelock with the Lukeion Project. Overall, I've had good experiences with both although my child didn't like Henle because of so many translations referring to Caesar killing Gauls which got old. Hope this helps. Cathy
  9. He has not needed any help at all. It seems to be very clear. Cathy
  10. My son is using this. No text is needed. The lectures are clear and he really likes the course. For lab, we use the micro-chem kit which was purchased at Home Science Tools. It's not hard to figure out what lab is appropriate for what group of lectures. Hope this helps. Cathy
  11. He has taken a few practice tests at home. He continues to not score well on reading and Science. He does better if I give the practice exam alone rather than after the english and math section. Time seems the biggest issue. How do you teach a child to read faster?
  12. I'm in need of some advice. My son is not scoring better than a 25-26 on the science and reading portions of practice ACTs. He is a strong reader but tends to be slow. His main problem on these sections are time. Other then using a stopwatch, has any one had any experience in improving these scores? Has there been anything that stands out as particulary helpful? He is a junior so we don't have a lot of time. Any input is much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Cathy
  13. I like Write Better Essays in just 20 minutes a day as well as Teaching the Essay and Teaching the Research paper by Robin Findley (analytical grammar author).
  14. If anyone has taken this class, I am interested to see if it really helped significantly for preparing for the SAT. I don't want to kill my son with more work, but don't think he's going to do so hot on the vocabulary section of the SAT. Thanks for any input. Cathy:)
  15. Thanks; I thought it was a book. I'm learning!
