Any recommendations for what would work well in combination with IEW?

Do you use a separate grammar program in combination with IEW? My almost 10yo does IEW through Classical Conversations and I am thinking we may want to add a grammar workbook of some sort to help reinforce the mechanics.

Do you have your child compete both sides of the worksheet? I did not require my 1st and 3rd grader to do the back side if the front was done correctly. If any questions were missed, then I would have them work the similar question on the back (but not the whole page). Just wondering if most people follow Saxon's recommendation to do the front side, and complete the back later in the day.

I used the filing system and it worked great for our family, so I am preparing to do it again next year. I didn't have any problems with loose papers. I had 36 weeks of work filed. Every Sunday, I transferred one week of work to each child's personal binder by putting it in subject folders on the left side. When each day's work was completed, they put it back in the right side of each subject folder. I kept a crate with large binders for each subject to store their completed work. When Sunday rolled around again, I would remove the completed work and put it in the correct subject binder in the crate. Then, I would open my filing cabinet and file the next week's work. Gosh, typing this makes it look more complicated than it is! So easy and neat taking care of it all in 5-10 minutes weekly. We finished school today and my filing cabinet is empty and my little crate is full of binders with all of our completed work for the year.

Any advice on how to go about finding a pen pal for my (soon to be) 9 year old daughter? She has been asking for one for some time, but I am paranoid about finding one on the internet. Does anyone on this board have a 9 or 10 year old daughter that would be interested in having a pen pal? Thanks!

Sometimes we just use our "last name" Family Homeschool, but lately I've been calling us "Future Hope Academy". I like the scripture that talks about God having plans for you, to give you a future and a hope.

Any ideas? I know there have been posts about this before, but I can't find them. We're starting next week and I'm just looking for some simple and fun ideas to make the first day sweet and memorable. I have a 3rd, 1st, PreK/K, and toddler. Thanks!

Just wondering if most people use the meeting book. We slacked off in Saxon 1 and Saxon 2. Now I'm wondering if I should just skip it altogether for Saxon 3. I'm curious as to why or why not people choose to use it.

I didn't take our AAS books apart. It was too difficult to determine how we would break the lessons up. Besides, my kids are still young enough that I need to present the lesson, so including it in their files was really unnecessary. Catholicmommy gave me the idea of putting the progress chart in week one and just moving it along as we go. It's basically just a visual, but my kids can still put stickers on it as they complete the steps. I will also probably include some lined paper for writing, since we don't always use the manipulatives.

Taking me awhile too. I really, really, really want to feel like I've had a break before we start school again, but I'm starting to realize that may not happen! :tongue_smilie:

catholicmommy- I was secretly hoping I'd hear from you! I would have sent you a message directly, but I didn't want to bother you. Thanks for your response. You are my latest hero! :) I have been so excited to start filing and I have everything ready, but I think I started feeling insecure about doing it right. I like the idea of the progress chart and blank template. Visual reminders will be very helpful for me. I am going to do this for AAS, OPGTR, and FLL. Both of my girls will be doing the same NOEO Science and Artistic Pursuits, so I may see if I can make copies of the manuals to include in each of their folders. However, I'm a little undecided about this, as they are only 8 and 6 and I will have to be with them to instruct their lessons. Maybe I should just keep the manuals in a basket and only include notebooking pages, science kits, art supplies (that will fit), etc. in their folders. For NOEO, I could personalize their notebooking pages with the title of the assigned book and page numbers. For AP, I could copy just the page with the picture of the art being studied and add that too. Hmmmm....Kinda bummed that I won't be ripping up more books!!! LOL

I just saw that on the original thread and I think that makes more sense for me too! I was planning on having an extra hanging folder with monthly folders, so I will just add my lists there. Thanks! Anyone have any advice on the materials we are using?
