  1. 2.5-3 hours Saturday mornings hopefully as “study†time or get ahead time but often it is catch up time as DS is very busy with ECs at certain times of the year...DS try’s to be done by noon...he’s says most of his friends are not waking up until 10-11 anyways. We use an 30 minutes Sunday night as time to prep for the coming week
  2. Our mathy son enjoyed the Number Devil. He's shared it friends and reread it (just for fun).
  3. Our DS(13), our oldest, took the SAT in March and will now be attending his first JHU-CTY Intensive Study camp this summer. This is our families first such experience. We've known he has potential, he's a hard worker and shown he's ready (we think). However, each time he confirms his potential, well it's humbling and can be a bit overwhelming. It all seems to be happening quickly...elementary school, a year of middle, now three weeks away at a college...whoa! JU-CTY's information does a good job of suggesting what the kids should expect and pack. If your children have had similar opportunities or experiences, do you have any additional packing suggestions or general advice for such trips/experiences. Thanks.
  4. We know more than a few folks who've gone to GC. We have friends whose sons and daughters are there now or recently graduated. A couple of them graduated with engineering degrees. All speak highly of the school and their experience.
  5. We've always purchased both. Personally, I would prefer the hard copy (old school I guess), but both my DC prefer the online books.
  6. Bump-following, we are considering the same
  7. DW and I split the homeschooling duties. It's our first year after years of after-schooling. So far everything is going as we've hoped. I'm enjoying the additional time with my kids.
  8. We will be trying MCT for the first time this year. Your schedules will help tremendously! Thank you.
  9. Yes, my message should have read MO (not MI) 😠And we couldn't agree more with your assessment, our thoughts exactly!
  10. Just a shout out to Dr. Hopkin's Math Contest Camp at SBU in MI. Our two mathgeeks really enjoyed their week and are looking forward to returning next year. as our first sleep away camp, I volunteered this year in order to be nearby, we were thoroughly impressed with the camp. Here's a link that includes a daily schedule and various online resources: https://sites.google.com/site/sbumathcon/math-contest-camp-2016
  11. We have two sons taking AOPS classes who had previously done LOF, Khan Academy and their B&M school's math. I would second starting with PA. AOPS is not for every student, but for us there has been no going back to traditional school curriculum after finding AOPS.
  12. Our young 10 year, in 5th grade this past year, took the AOPS pre-Alg 1 and 2, actually just finishing up. As others have said AOPS may not be for everyone, but for our guy the discovery method was a tremendous hit and the pace of the classes taught him study habits, resilience, failure (not always getting problems the first try), and much more. As others have mentioned the "math community" and talking with like-minded kids before and have class was great. His true love of math (problem solving) came out as he was willing to put in the hours needed to work at that pace. If he was a not a true math nerd, the pace and work load may have been too much.
  13. DS when in 1st (and just moved to a new class exposing him to 3rd grade math) brings home his first math homework/test....a score of zero, every problem wrong! While upon closer look he answered every "How long does it take to travel from a to b" type question in seconds...correctly! He said the problems were too easy when answering in days and hours...🤔..teacher insisted he retake the test again and answer in D and H...😡...so the advocating (for a couple years) and eventually homeschool journey began. ðŸ‘
  14. Our two boys have taken the Pre-A and Pre-B classes. On average 6.5-8 hours/wk in total depending on subject and difficulty of a particular week. Sometimes we would do 1-1.5 a day or on occasion when they were in the "zone" we would 2 or 3 hours over the course of a morning and make great headway on a particular subject. After 32 weeks of Pre Alg, we opted for the MathCOUNTs/AMC-8 class in order to take a small break. It requires little less time, but will keep them challenged. I agree with others who have mentioned that beyond the great curriculum the benefit of having to work hard, become resilient, use all your mathematical "tools" in order to solve certain problems and explain in writing your thinking is absolutely wonderful. They are learning skills will beyond pre-algebra.
  15. Our DS will also finish pre-alg II in the coming week or two. We were going to have him do Alg I, but have decided to do the Mathcounts/AMC 8 class. He has worked hard over the past 32 weeks and we figure, to borrow a bit of soccer lingo, he'll get his math "touches" with the Mathcounts class this Spring. He'll take the Alg I and C/P next year. Taking the compacted Alg I class in the fall provides a couple built in breaks during the holidays. We think those timely breaks will help. The Alg I class moves at a much faster pace then pre-Alg I and II.
