  1. I would be concerned it would not be enough. I find the 1.5 hour classes to be long and I think for the more difficult subjects, twice a week is optimal for accountability and memory. My dd has taken Algebra I and Geometry through Derek Owens and even that has been challenging. I am fine helping her with both of those, but Algebra II is out of my comfort zone, so I enrolled her in a live online twice a week program.

  2. I would absolutely love for video based history and science curricula that is vibrant and engaging and shows the world of both subjects. I am not talking about a lecturer discussing it, but re-enactments of history, and nat. geo. type videos. I have a dyslexic student who is very visual, and we struggle to find topical studies like this. I can usually find one video, but that just doesn't go into the detail necessary.

Ha!  Based on your description, I think my daughter has this same teacher for literature.

Mr. Schaeffer said she gets nothing but glowing reports and everyone loves her. He just could not understand at all what our problem was. The teacher does teach both comp and lit, but it could be two separate teachers, I suppose. I am happy to share a name privately.

I am a huge fan of MPOA, and I have often sung their praises on this forum.     In fact, I was planning on having my students take a lot of classes with them through homeschool---and now I don't even feel comfortable with that anymore.     Things have gotten really, really messy over there.

I feel the exact same. I don't know what happened or why, but it the entire feel of it changed for us. Five years in and we are moving away from MPOA entirely.

We have loved Cutrer and Dray for Latin.

Last year my daughter registered for a HS Comp II and the teacher was a good teacher but not very caring or compassionate to circumstances beyond our daughter's control. The attendance policy at MPOA varies by teacher, which is not a great way to run a school, and this teacher would not allow absences for dd to compete in speech/debate. Furthermore, she expected that her Comp II class knew her expectations without explicitly stating them, as she also taught Comp I, but as dd didn't take Comp I from her, she was unaware of many of them. She was short and mocking of dd when she asked questions in class or in the Ask a Teacher Forum. The admin gave us a full refund, because he agreed with what we were saying, but rather than transfer her to another class, we were left high and dry without a Composition class for the year. This would be find in Middle School, but was completely unacceptable at the high school level. It is my belief, given my daughter's exceptional relationships with other teachers there over a five year time period, that she should have been given an exception and transferred to a different section.

Registration has been a complete joke. As another stated, I have fond feelings for MPOA, but they just completely dropped the ball this year. We registered for classes at WHA and VPSA. I am so disappointed.

  5. I love math and have always been Math-y. I only took through Calculus in college, though, because I didn't need other math for my degree. I taught Algebra I, but I am really struggling through all the proofs in Geometry. We are taking Geometry through Derek Owens, and even so, it has been a struggle for us both. The proofs are a lot more than what I learned in high school Geometry. I don't have any advice, just a warning, and I would like to follow this.

  6. 10th grade dd:

    History/Literature/Government/Writing/Bible: Tapestry of Grace Year 2 Co-op

Algebra II: not sure if we will go with DO again or a live online class.

Physics: Honors Physics with WSA or MPOA

    French: French together

    Electives: speech/debate, logic, dance, photography

As an aside, we teach MLA in our writing co-op but I would caution teaching anything "hard and fast" when it comes to citing. Different professors have different preferences, so it's imperative to teach it as such. Students should be prepared to adapt!

I’m not sure what you mean exactly, but I’ll tell you what I know. The teacher conducts one live lecture and one live problem-solving session per week (although my DD watches the recordings asynchronously). There are homework, quizzes, tests, and semester exams. DD says BT’s Learning Management System is the best of any she’s ever used because it’s very organized and intuitive. The teacher uses WebAssign for online homework that is graded automatically and provides instant feedback; DD really likes this and finds it helpful, especially if she’s struggling  with a concept. I believe this is the hardest she’s had to work for an A in a math class, but that is probably because Honors Pre-Calc is just more difficult than prior classes. DD just added that Mrs. Porter provides guided notes for the lectures that are very helpful.

LMK if you have any specific questions and I’ll try to get an answer for you.

Yes, this is what I was asking. Thank you!

We’ve been very happy with the math sequence at Wilson Hill Academy, particularly Eric Reini’s classes. DD took Pre-Calc with Blue Tent this year (because Reini wasn’t teaching Pre-Calc at WHA), and that has also been great. I’d check out both of those.

Can you explain how Blue Tent works?

Wow!  I am using DO for Algebra II and I have had a great experience.  I am always amazed at how quickly they answer our questions and grade work.   Sorry to hear that you are having problems.

Are you looking for a class or book that you can teach at home?

I would prefer a class. I am thinking live/online too.

We loved Algebra. Sometimes the return on grades is 3-4 days and 48 hours or more for questions. We are behind as a result. It's very frustrating.

  11. I am looking for a class for my daughter. We have done two years or Derek Owens but this year has been problematic. The customer service has been unacceptable and we are not likely to get responses to questions within a reasonable timeline for completing homework. Does anyone have another program that has worked?

  12. I have not taught R level 2-4th year in TOG but the books for Year 1 so far have been anything but dry and boring. They are not easy to read, by any stretch, but they are fascinating. My daughter is not a history buff and only tolerated the previous stages of history with TOG/Biblioplan, but she is truly enjoying History this year.

  13. I have used DO for Algebra 1 and am we will be using it for Geometry again. The response time is excellent for questions, and the grading turn around is also generally very fast. We did have a few times when it took longer than 24 hours but those were rare and usually because the email went to the wrong box. The videos are better than Dive (we used this when my son used Saxon two years ago), and the teacher grading is beneficial for the times when you need to stay on pace. I am sure we will use DO for all of high school math and then for physics as well. HTH
