  1. Hi everyone, Planning a few days each in New York and Philly next week. We just finished the 3rd year of SOTW and I want to take my rising 4th grader to some historical sites relevant to her studies. Any suggestions on which museums, walks, national parks, etc. are the best for this age? Especially in NYC, we have been to Natural History Museum, MOMA and the Met but I don't know what are the best bets for history... Thanks in advance, Rich
  2. Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone knows of review tests for these curricula? I know there are SOTW chapter tests available for purchase, but I am looking for tests covering a broader span of the material. Any ideas (before I get my lazy self to start writing my own:001_smile:)? Thanks, Rich
  3. We just finished first grade. Hit the Met in NYC early in the year, then just visited the Getty Villa a few weeks ago (both as part of family trips, not specifically for home schooling). I can't speak highly enough of the experience at the Getty. Met is fantastic with lots to see, but crowded and feels rushed. I like the size of the Getty Villa, and the fact that it is a reproduction of an actual Roman Villa. So the architecture gives an amazing dimension to experiences life as a filthy rich Roman. Also if you go definitely get their audio tour ($5 / person). They have special audio tour for families and kids that was perfect for us. The kids activity room is good too.
  4. Hi everyone, As we've gotten to the end of first grade, I realize that I haven't done much reviewing of material we've covered. I've started to make some flashcards online for history (below) but no math or science. Flashcards are good for factual recall but I'm not sure this is the only best way to go. Anyone have any successful routines and practices for reviewing, either as you go or at the end of the year? Here is the history "deck" I started for SOTW Vol 1 using iflipr, a free tool for flashcards. I hope to finish it soon. Feel free to use by clicking on "Practice." http://www.iflipr.com/deck/menu/338567 Rich
  5. Hi Karly, I'm new to homeschooling, working with my 6 year old 1st grader. I'm in the same boat as you. We started with Saxon and after 3 days of it I realized it was not for us. Since then we've been doing 2 worksheet pages per day from math mammoth and supplementing with literature, online math games, cooking projects, etc. We're having much more fun now, but I'm not sure how much I like Math Mammoth. I just ordered the first book of Singapore on the recommendation of a math teacher friend, and it should arrive today. I'm thinking I will use that and/or mammoth. But the other activities have really been the best. Today we're reading a book called "The Doorbell Rang" by Pat Hutchins and having a cookie party with her stuffed animals where she'll divide cookies among them. Best of luck, Rich
