  1. This recipe will make 1 pizza - I double it, triple if we have company. Crust: 1 c. warm water 1 tbsp. active dry yeast Let sit for 5 minutes, then add 2 1/2 c. flour 2 tbsp. olive oil (or vegetable) 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt Mix, then knead for a couple of minutes. Let it rest while you prepare everything else, then roll out and place on back side of greased cookie sheet or what-have-you. Sauce: 1 5.5-oz. can tomato paste and one can water (could use a can of tomato sauce) 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. each basil and oregano 1/4 tsp. thyme 1 clove garlic, chopped very fine or crushed Mix all ingredients in saucepan and cook over low heat until bubbly. Let it simmer until you're ready to use it. This covers two pizzas with a thin amount of sauce, double if necessary. Once your dough, sauce, toppings and grated cheese are put together, bake at 375 for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Sonlight Core 6 works for us. You could also look into A World of Adventure.
  3. Both. The educational system, in my estimation, regularly puts the cart before the horse. As SWB notes, they begin having children writing more and more at younger and younger ages. But this rarely produces any depth of thought. This same characteristic - students producing at a younger age, but very superficially - can extend to reading instruction and math, as well. My .02. ~Kathy, who is off to read the rest of the replies now
  4. I heard that, too. This is what I was told: "As of April 1, Sonlight will no longer offer free shipping to Canadians unless you're an heirloom member. They will be charging between 15-25% shipping depending on the $ amount of your order PLUS a fuel surcharge as per FedEx. The fuel surcharge varies with the fuel prices so it's really high in the summer. When you factor in the value of our dollar, it's going to be ridiculous to supplement from their catalogue." OUCH!!
  5. Dry mustard, basil and pepper tastes great with mayo, diced onion, macaroni and veggies.
  6. I thought Core 5 was a tour of the Eastern Hemisphere. My impression was that it is arranged geographically, though obviously some of the history is going to overlap. I like both your choices!
  7. I hang them on the edge of the laundry basket in the laundry room until they are dry enough to go in the basket. In other circumstances, I've tossed them straight in the washing machine.
  8. I just saw something about the shipping industry last week, I think it was on Daily Planet. The reason given for ships being so inefficient with fuel was they are travelling too quickly, rather than working within the environment.
  9. We're using just the CDs for the lessons but I have ds write the tests in the workbook.
  10. 1.5 lb ground beef 1/2 c. milk (or substitute water) 1/2 c. dry bread crumbs 1 egg 1/4 c. chopped onion 1 clove chopped garlic (optional) 1 Tbsp. Worcerstershire sauce 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. dry mustard 1/4 tsp. pepper 1/4 tsp. sage Mix all ingredients and bake in loaf pan at 350 for approx. 1.5 hrs. Sometimes we like a little sauce spooned on top before baking: 4 Tbsp. ketchup 3 tsp. brown sugar 1 tsp. mustard 1/4 tsp. nutmeg Yes, all processed, but yummy! :001_smile:
  11. Too late now, but meatballs are so versatile: Spaghetti & Meatballs Sweet & Sour Meatballs with Rice Meatball Stew Then there's Hamburger Minestrone, Hamburger Curry, Cabbage Rolls, Lasagne, Homemade Hamburger Helper-type casserole....
  12. Looks very interesting - thanks for the link, Rebecca!
  13. It does sound slightly hyper - even small changes in thyroid levels can make a big difference. I vote you get a blood test. I have the opposite problem: I've been comfortably on medication for hyperthyroid for 8+ years and last fall began experiencing slightly hypothyroid symptoms and had to lower my dose. A friend of mine was undiagnosed hypothyroid for over ten years. When he finally got treated he eventually lost 80 pounds. He found he needed his medication adjusted after that.
  14. Ditto! We like apple press and would love more info on the early exploration book.
  15. DD used volume 1 in K, and she is working through volume 2 this year. I really like it. I appreciate that it's low-key, not time-consuming, and all laid out for us. Like Coffeegal, we use other resources for learning to read, and LLFLO to reinforce and include other aspects like narrations, picture appreciation and poetry appreciation.
  16. My boy of '96 and I are working on gr. 7, too. What I notice in your schedule: I assume Lightning Lit has writing, and that your son doesn't need spelling instruction, unlike mine. :tongue_smilie: We're using Rainbow Science which begins with physics. I don't know if that's appealing or not. Looks good!
  17. Take a quick peek at the front page in the Teacher's Helper. It's set up to be done three days a week. The student reads a lesson from the textbook on the first two days, and on the third day does a lab. I think many students can do this independently. There are also quizzes (and answers) available to download at Rainbow's website if you are interested in adding testing to the schedule.
  18. Much the same as this year, which isn't nearly as much fun to plan. Sonlight Core 6 - Middle Ages/SOTW 2; TT Pre-Algebra??; Megawords, Winston Grammar (finish up), IEW - Medieval Lessons maybe; Rainbow Science; RS German Perhaps I'll have thought of more by convention season. :)
  19. My MIL loves Pearl Buck so I mentioned Amy Tan, and she has devoured those, too.
  20. Our library used to have bookmarks with 'Read-Alikes': "If you like insert popular author, you might like list of 8-or-so similar series/authors/titles."
