  1. Henry and Mudge, Cam Jansen, Dinosaur Detective are the few I can remember.
  2. Ugh. My mother checked out some book from the library. I don't remember much about it, but that I pretty much already knew the information that she shared with me and some of it was very odd. I just played along and was like ohh. I started my period a few months before my mom even knew, but I wanted to be picked up early from school so I called her a few months in to come get me. My mother asked me if I was wondering about birth control at 17 and I said no Im already pregnant. Lol. not funny, but you have to laugh sometimes.
  3. Does anyone know if the teachers books are available in a pdf?
  4. I will try that also, thanks! It is comforting to know that others think it is within the normal range and not something to be terribly concerned about right now. We just started copywork recently so I am hoping that will help as well. He went through Abeka K-2nd but because of so many things going on I didn't do the program exactly as written, so that could be why the phonics hasn't seemed to stick well. How to Teach Spelling is rules/phonics based, so Im again hoping that starts to help over time. We had a late start to the year due to a move and my 1 year old having surgery. We technically began 3rd grade only a few months ago, so I know there is still lots of time left to our year. In regards to editing, should I sit down with him afterwards, help him correct the misspelled words and then have him rewrite it? When starting out in K-1st he wrote letters and numbers backwards. He would sometime do things like writing 24 as 42. I know some of that is normal and he seemed to outgrow it. He only does it very rarely now. Today he wrote z backwards for a math problem, but I think he was just over thinking the problem and not thinking about his writing. My husband was severely dyslexic, so I guess that's why ive had it more on my radar. He has had his hearing checked by an audiologist before but its been a few years. I will have it checked again to make sure nothing has changed and its still good. I pronounce when as win as well. I can see how he'd have trouble with those. It also makes sense that his free writing would be worse. He doesn't like handwriting and I just started requiring him to write a little this year so that could be it too. Thank you for the suggestions and plan. I am going to get back on here tonight and reread all the suggestions and come up with a more structured plan than we have currently.
  5. Ok, I have more energy now and actually went and grabbed the last thing he wrote and his spelling notebook. Some examples from yesterday of things I feel he just clearly didn't even try to sound out were "crismis" (supposed to be Christmas) and "vallentimes" (supposed to be Valentines). He wrote "fonds" for "friends"...huh and what?? He wrote "sandwigish" for "sandwiches". Ugh. I could understand if he spelt Christmas as "Cristmas" but crismis? These are words that he would have seen thousands of times and read thousands of times too. I try not to be too hard on him, and point out every. single. misspelling because he does get frustrated, but I try to gently talk to him about certain ones to try to get him to think more about what he is writing. For example, I asked him why he would even put a "g" sound in sandwiches and then after pronouncing it a thousand times with him I realized we say it more like "sand-widges". Still why the "sh" sound on the end. ^^^This is from his free writing. What I saw from his spelling notebook yesterday was that he spelled "than" and "then" correctly. Then, he misspelled "blunt" and "blont". He misspelled "these" as "thees". He spelled correctly almost all other words including blot, bled, blame, clap, clam, whisk, whim. Oh, he did spell "when" as "whin". He got flat, flip, flame, flash, and flesh correct. Sorry I may be going over board with examples, I'm just wondering if there is something I'm not seeing.
  6. I haven't noticed a pattern of misspellings with vowels vs consonants. In fact, when we did the three letter cvc words and most of the other words we have spelled so far from How to Teach Spelling he has gotten them all right. The majority of the spelling that he does wrong is when he writes stuff on his own. It is like there is a disconnect and it seems like he isn't really thinking about what he is writing. I am trying to tell him to divide the word by syllables and say it slowly and write each syllable at a time to try to encourage him to hear the sounds in the words. I agree that whale and whell aren't technically phonetically correct but I was trying hard to think of examples and those were the only ones I could remember. We are in the south though, so maybe a regional thing, haha  . With that word he kept saying he didn't know how to spell it even though I said "ale" over and over again and just asked him how do you spell "ale" and then he still wrote it "ell". I am going to get his hearing checked as soon as I can get him in just to rule those type of problems out. He did show signs of dyslexia when younger though those are mostly gone now. I'm not sure if that could be affecting his spelling in some way. Just thinking out loud here.
  7. My dd9 holds her pencils with her middle finger with the...uh..pointer finger and then just has the other two resting underneath as opposed to having the three fingers underneath the way the perfect pencil grip is supposed to be. I tried in K to correct her but honestly there is no correcting it. That is how she wants to hold her pencil and her handwriting is neat. My dd6 on the other hand holds her pencil with a full fist grasp which needs to be worked on. She has other learning delays an im trying to get her into OT for this specific one. In the meantime I ordered the crossover pencil grip. She can write like that for a few minutes but it is very uncomfortable for her. In doing research for dd6 I came across a lot of links of people that held their pencil like dd9 as normal. Oops posted before I was finished. If its not a full fist grip and their handwriting is neat I think id just leave it alone. Im of course not an expert though.
  8. I am trying to think through how to best help my son without buying every spelling curriculum on the planet. Ds8 (3rd grade) is not a natural speller..at all. I gave him the mccalls spelling test that you can download from the spalding website and he tested at 2.9 grade level so not that far off. WRTR was hard for me to implement and I ordered How to Teach Spelling. We are just a couple weeks in, but I have no idea to help him. Most of the misspelled words can be seen as phonically correct. For example, he spelled "phase" as "phaze", "whale" as "whell". Some words are completely off, but most are like this. Does he just need to work on memorizing? Sometimes he misspells words that he just obviously did not take the time to sound out. One example is that he spelled "butter" as "better". I asked him what letter made the "uh" sound for "b *uh* tter" and he knew it but still didn't write it that way. My oldest is a natural speller so im just a little lost.
  9. I was looking into Singapore, but have decided on Miquon. I was looking up past threads and saw that someone recommended purchasing the pdf so you can print for multiple kids. I like that idea, of course. Then I read that someone recommended just getting the hard copy. Does the pdf print in black/white? It looked like the samples of the book were in color. I will probably just tear out the pages from the workbook anyway. I guess I'm wondering what the difference is between the workbook and the pdf. What about the extra teacher books. Is there a download for those or am I basically just going to be ordering them.
  10. Thank you very much. The BCBA did not do anything really. I'm not familiar with what is usually done and this was my only experience. She basically asked me a series of questions about her while she played in the room (This was last August she was 6). She asked my dd maybe two or three questions, to which she had odd ball answers. I think the main reason she concluded that she couldn't diagnose for ASD at that time was that my dd made eye contact, played nicely and cleaned up the toys when asked. So yes, that wasn't a good eval. Her last speech eval was when she was 4. She was in speech for a while, but then our insurance dropped us, we lost our time slot (I was taking 3 kids to speech at the time so it was hard to coordinate their schedules). This year has been crazy for us. We moved to a new city in May and we are about to move back home either in a few weeks or for sure by April. I am trying to get all the testing done before we move back, so I at least have that ready for the new ped and can say this is what she's been diagnosed with so far and this is what she needs. I had a horrible ped before we moved here who refused to give referrals which is why im still trying to get this sorted out. We wont be going back to that office, but because of their insurance (Medicaid) the options are pretty slim. Off to make more phone calls...
  11. Ok, im a little slow but I finally checked the diagnosis and the person who did the...what I would call observing has lmhc and bcba after her name. This was a private group who to my knowledge deal primarily with autism. I would not be surprised if she does eventually get a diagnosis that includes asd, but it could not be that as well and I wouldn't be shocked. I know there is something going on though. A processing disorder of some sort. Motor skills were mentioned. The thing I have seen with her is that she still does a full fist grasp of her pencil or when coloring..holding any writing instrument. I did get a hold of the local college and they do hearing tests, but said they do not do tests for processing and other issues. It is the same with speech. Our insurance does require referrals. I am still waiting on the drs office. I think I may have missed their call yesterday and just called and left a message. Besides the school, anyone else do these testings? Another department at the college maybe? Her main issue is conversation and responding appropriately to questions. I can ask her things and its like asking a 2 or 3 year old. As far as toddlers crying...what happened? She wont tell me. Did you do that on accident or on purpose? Same thing. She cant answer questions like what she had for breakfast. Someone will ask her something and she will just tell them how she wants a pet bunny and it has nothing to do with what they just said.
  12. God is holy, you are not. I could never imagine saying that do my children either. I am also not holy and cannot imagine giving up my only child to save everyone else. God speaks in several different ways. Just rest assured that if God needs to tell you something he will tell you rather it be through a dream, an animal, His word... He can make stones speak. It is never about God but about our position in being able to hear him. I have never come across anything in the Bible that shows God once not being able to tell someone something. God did give us a hint. Check out the book of Romans. You know there is a creator because there is a creation. We only have a sense of morals because of God. Ravi Zacharias is someone who can explain it much better than me. eta to the which is right comment. Look up Ravi Zacharias Jesus among other gods
  13. I feel like I have answered everything except this. My apologies but I have extra time tonight as I am the only one awake :). We are not punished. God is a merciful God. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3?). We are not "sentenced to hell". I just believe, and I believe the Bible shows, that life without God is simply hell. Salvation is the gift of God. It is God saying that even though you broke the fellowship with me I will pay the ultimate price to get you back. God gives us the option to disobey and then offers the utmost to redeem us once we disobey. Punishment is not across the board. The punishment was death in the physical sense. Elijah and Enoch never died, but instead were taking up, "translated" from this life to the next. A bit much, I know, but it just goes to show that God views each situation on a case by case basis :). Hell is literally life without God. See, even though people may not believe in God, it doesn't change the fact that God is there. In the sermon on the mount (Matthew 5-7ish) it says that God causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust and the sun to shine on the good and evil. You may not believe in God, but that doesn't change the fact that every single thing that has happened to you is because of God. You may spit in Gods face, but there still is God. Ecclesiastes speaks of how it is better to be a dog than a dead lion. Once your dead that's it. There are no more options. God is a holy God. He cannot fellowship with evil. This is why he sent his son to reunite and allow you to be in his presence. Its a rule of the universe. 2 plus 2 cannot equal 5 (thanks to my sons latest math book title).
  14. The verses I went to look up were in Romans chapter 9 when it talks about God making some vessels for evil and some for good. I don't know if that will help you out any but I wanted to mention it so you can read it if you would like.
  15. We are only behaving in the way he made us in the sense that we are behaving with choice. He didn't create man to sin, but to have fellowship with him. Read the first dozen chapters in the book of genesis. Eve listened to the serpent, Adam listened to Eve, and God came looking to fellowship with them as he had been doing. Immediately he notices something was off because they were hiding. They get their punishments...Eve has to deal with child bearing, Adam has to work for food, the serpent has to slither on the ground and loses his voice. What is often skipped over? What is the first thing God does? He makes them clothes. He has mercy on them. It was the first sacrifice, the first death, to cover up the sins of man. I remember reading that and thinking oh my goodness, God was just betrayed and then he made them clothes even though they only realized they were naked because of sin. He made us to have fellowship with him and he restored that through Jesus Christ. He did not make man to sin, only to have a choice.
  16. I would love to share my thoughts on this. God didn't want robots. He wanted people freely choosing of their own will to follow him. It was the same scenario in the garden as it is today. It is kind of a catch 22? I guess you could say. God gave man a choice knowing what he would choose but isn't that better than not giving a choice? Then, you could take it a step further. God not only gave man a choice as to whether they would follow him but he offered up himself, his only Son, as the payment for mans sin. Man did choose to disobey. God didn't make us disobey, he only gave us the option to disobey. What kind of God would he have been if he would have forced people to follow him. I have to look up a few verses and then will be back.
  17. Love America's Test Kitchen. Sorry it is ot, but I will have to check those out. I didn't know they had a gluten free.
  18. Can I vote for trash can :). Lol, if im not in a really bad mood I try to put the dishes on the counter, because it ends up stopping up the sink. Which reminds me I forgot to buy paper plates at the store.
  19. A behavior group in town did the testing. I will have to check the sheet again to see what the persons qualifications were. I remember some initials after the name, haha. This is so overwhelming. All these abbreviations and tests and doctors and im so ignorant with all of them. We are in a big university town and I did find out they have a clinic that does testing for speech/language/hearing. I made a call to them this morning and im waiting to hear back about how long for an appointment.
  20. Have you seen the workbooks that rainbow resource has for it? I was seriously drawn to it. I may end up using it with the workbooks.
  21. This is a good perspective to have too. I like having our dinners together, but not like this. I stress easily and I can't eat with all the noise and usually end up choking telling them to stop. We definitely spend lots of time together, lol. If I can control the mess if they eat away from the table, maybe we could just eat at the table when dh is home.
  22. I agree with this two as in im not sure that cleaning up after 7 people would fit the crime, but it would prob get him to stop. Lol We also have our after dinner chores and usually all pitch in. My son loads the dishwasher, all the kids scrape their plates, dd9 does the floor and dd6 wipes the table.
  23. I swear my dd9 and ds8 drive me batty whenever we sit down to have a meal. It is mostly ds8, since that is his personality. He is the "class clown" of our homeschool. Dd9 would probably behave appropriately, but she goes along with him. There is not a moment of peace. It is not constant talking, or even excited talking, or any talking at all really. It is mostly laughing, noise making, parts of sentences that I can't even make out. It is ridiculous. I know no one else would allow that behavior at the table. At least, I think no one else would. I guess I made this post wondering that. I have talked to them about having what I call intelligent conversation and that if they are going to talk they need to have something to talk about. I am vastly outnumbered as I am mostly here by myself at dinner time. This has to end asap, right? :cursing:
