  1. We used MFW and loved it! Daughter is now in her first year of college and is an honor student. :)
  2. A little off topic, but I just posted the new version on the for sale forum. It was too late for us. We had already started using the older version and decided to just continue what we were doing. I hope you have a great co-op class! We enjoyed this study.
  3. I just ordered the new version. My DD liked the look of the sample pages. :)
  4. My DD is almost finished with Geometry using DO. He has been great. Any time that she has had trouble understanding a problem, she emails him and he gets back with her with a video showing how the problem was worked or and email explaining what she needs to do. This is a child who has hated math in the past. DO grades all the proofs with comments on errors. We have been very pleased with him.
  5. Thanks for your feedback cbollin. Anyone else using or used Aleks?
  6. Has anyone used Aleks for High School? Can you share the pros and cons? How did it work out for ACT and SAT testing? Thanks!
  7. Another vote for Derek Owens. We are using him this year for Geometry and I highly recommend him! My DD who used to hate math, loves his classes.
  8. Candid, I have really lucked out this year. I'm using Derek Owens for Geometry. He teaches, grades the homework and tests, and is there to answer any questions that my DD has about her Geometry lessons. For Chemistry, she is doing a co-op class. Her teacher has a degree in Chemistry and grades the lab notebook, conducts the lab classes, and gives and grades the test. She is also available at a local college on Wednesdays if the students need extra help. My DD made a 98% on her first test. Wow, I think I'll just sit back with a nice tall glass of iced tea and a good book! Who would have thought high school would be so easy? :)

  10. Hi Guys, Just wanted to report back and let everyone know how the Derek Owens' Geometry classes are going. We weren't able to start in July as planned. My DD got a new laptop computer this summer which has Windows 8. Mr. Owens had to reformat(?) the videos so that she could view them on her computer. Mr. Owens rocks! He bends over backwards to accommodate his students. My DD who hates math, loves his classes. He makes Geometry easy for her to understand and if she does have a question he responds to his emails in an acceptable amount of time. I plan to use him for the rest of her high school math classes. Our DD will be very well prepared for college math classes! Thank you to everyone who replied to this post! I really appreciate all of your feedback!
  11. We started our school year last week. DD is using Apologia Chemistry and loves it. She loves Apologia so much, that she refuses to let me sell her used books. :)
  12. We used WP QMA a few years ago. It was all laid out for you. I might have used it a couple of months and then I bought the TruthQuest History guide and made up my own schedule. It was OK, but just didn't work as laid out for us. I have always tweeked anything I've bought though. This year we are using MFW World History for 10th grade. We started last week and it is perfect for us. It's all scheduled out and written to the student. Friday's are light. We have Co-op classes on Friday so need light that day. My DD loves it. We have finally found the perfect curriculum of us. Even if you don't use WP as written, it could still work for you. They have a lot of good books. Just tweek what doesn't work. Hope you have a great school year!
  13. Well we did it! I enrolled my DD in Derek Owens Geometry. Will give an update in a few days and let you know how it's going. :)
  14. We counted our DD's dance classes as Dance 1 and gave 1 credit for the whole year. Our umbrella school approved us doing it this way. Next year we will count dance as PE with .5 credit for the year because she will still be doing dance, but not as many classes. Plus she needs .5 credit of PE to graduate.
  15. Another vote for 2. Love the instant feed back.
  16. I order from both CB and RR. A few years ago, I was having the same problem you are having. It wasn't anything to do with CB. CB would actually replace my order even when I didn't have insurance. They were wonderful. There was also another supplier that is just 1 1/2 hours north of where we live that had shipped us a package at about the same time. This package arrived with no book and just the packing slip! Because I hadn't paid for insurance the PO would not reimburse me. However, the supplier resent my order free and paid for UPS shipping. This supplier informed me that if it goes through the Memphis PO, there would be problems. I was at our local PO complaining so much that when they saw me come through the door the "Next Window" signs went up. (OK, I'm just kidding, but they knew me!) After awhile things settled down and I am having no more problems. I started making sure all my packages were insured. Now my CB packages arrive with no problems. The packages from RR seem to take a little longer, but I have no problem with them either.
  17. Oh no Julie! Don't tell me correcting Chemistry is hard! DD will be taking that in the fall too! :willy_nilly: (Deep breath.) I think I can, I think I can. At least she will be doing the Chem labs with a co-op group. :glare:
  18. Yea, I think you're right! I have everything I would need to go with Dr Callahan except for the Teacher's Guide for $12 and the DVD set for $108. So I was really hoping that he woud be the one for us. However, I was leaning toward DO because I like his sample lessons, his treatment of proofs, his availability to answer student questions, having the grading done by an expert, yea he's sounding better all the time. Sometimes we have to do what's best for our children even if it does cost us more money. Thank you for helping me make my decision! I appreciate all you help. :hurray:
  19. Hmmm, correct me if I'm wrong. If I understand this right, the student just needs to memorize the problem from the book in order to pass the proof part of the test? No thinking, no logic, no other way than his way. Is this how Geometry should be taught? I thought the student was supposed to be encouraged to logically figure proofs out for him/herself.
  20. I agree with you about the web based programs' ability to grade proofs correctly. That is one big plus for choosing DO. I am really leaning toward that DO. It's quite a bit of money from our homeschool budget, but it sounds like it will be worth it in the long run. Thanks for your response Derek.
  21. OK Ladies, I've got so really good feedback and comments about DO. Has anyone used Dr. Callahan? Any positives/negatives you can share? I appreciate all the comments so far. You ladies are awesome!
  22. Thanks for the link. It sounds like he is really willing to go the extra mile for his students. I really like that he does the grading, has the student workbook for taking class notes, and is available to address parents concerns. I appreciate your reply.
  23. Thanks Jennifer. That's a good idea about possibly doing the course in less time to save money. I do like that she can do the lessons anytime. She has so many outside activities that having one set time for math would be hard to do. (DO should give you a discount for being a spokesperson for him.) :D
